1998 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro

Roccamonfina IGT Aglianico more

With Todd at Topo Gigio in Chicago, I brought this one as an "interesting" Italian wine for the evening. This is the sole bottle of this vintage in my cellar, was interested to try in its 20th year...decanted for about 30 minutes.

Dark, inky purple/ruby color. Nose showing black plums, charcoal/ash (assuming from volcanic soils) and earth. Palate of dark cherry, bacon fat, dark licorice, truffle, charcoal...Interesting secondary notes. Medium/long finish, tannins fined but still present.

Wine continued to improve in the glass over an hour - suggesting more air time would benefit it. This was an extension of my experiences with this other vintages of this wine - I find the crowd loves/hates it. The flavor profile is unmistakable (to me) but not always interesting or enjoyable to some drinkers - as a consequence I might say this is well made and age worthy wine...but hard (for me) to rate in traditional way. Interesting wine, worth a try. This bottle suggests very age worthy, still had big powerful fruit at 20 years...and plenty of life left

With Franceso and Francesca, beautiful dinner at their house. They hag looked for a wine from Anglianico to pair with one of the courses. Fruit and body were light, not much there. Improved a bit over an hour. No rating

2006 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro

Roccamonfina IGT Aglianico more

At home with a casual dinner of stuffed shells...pulled this on a whim. Haven't had a Galardi in a few years, my stash being a little on the younger side. This wine, in my experience, takes some time to settle in the bottle...Decanted for about 20 minutes, drank over 2 hours.

Opaque purple color, no real bricking. Nose evolved over the time the wine open, the brett, animal/barnyard when opened became dark fruits, leather, ash/smoke. Palate of dark fruits, blackberry, black licorice, leather... picking up the "volcanic soil". Tannins are still there although not overwhelming

This is probably a love it/hate it flavor profile. Maybe the nature of Aglianico, it will be in this primary stage for a while. I think this drinks well now but clearly has a long life ahead of it. A longer decant than I gave this bottle is advisable, would give it 1-2 hours if possible, that's when the secondary flavors start showing up (just as we were finishing our bottle..!) This would pair well with grilled meats and rustic Italian fare and game...nice wine for those who like Aglianico profile

2014 Benito Ferrara Taurasi

Taurasi DOCG Aglianico more

AT Bruno Ristorante in Positano, local favorite. Recommended by the waiter, first time with this wine. This is the Taurasi DOCG, not the Quatro Confini...PnP, had with some pasta and local fish.

Medium/dark ruby red. Nose showing ripe red cherry, fig/balsamic. Palate of dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, olives (?). Smooth texture, not much through the mid palate. Finishes with mineral notes. Medium body and finish.

Enjoyable wine, not as distinctive as other Anglianico based wines experienced on this trip. I suspect by design this is made to be less edgy and more accessible young (just a guess). Nice wine, should be at its best over the next 3-5 years

Bright red brick color. Nose was sour cherry, black tea. Smooth palate of black cherry, earth and nice minerality. Great choice with the pizza, excellent QPR on this wine. This vintage seems to be about where its going to get - would drink this over next 2 years

Last bottle of this, brought to Buono Vita in Somers Point to have with some old school Italian fare. Drank over an hour

Notes from 3/20/20: :Dark garnet core color, mild separation.Nose was a bit closed at first, opening up to show blackberry, coffee, earth, mushrooms. Rich palate of dark cherry, black currant, game/savory notes, herbs (rosemary?), coffee grinds, mineral. Great texture, full body, long(ish) finish..."

This was PnP but we took our time with it. There is a lot going on, it takes a good 20 minutes to really show the depth, better an hour in. Classic Anglianico with this terroir..."taste the volcano" terroir on display. Fully mature, not likely to improve from here

Nicely aged at this point, Anglianico can be impenetrable in its youth... this has come together in a really nice way. The air time/wake up makes a big difference, much better about an hour in. Would give it at least that much if venue allows. The palate seems much younger than the nose...not sure if that means anything. My experience with Anglianico in groups is it can be a love it/hate it result. This one is a classic "taste the volcano"...may not be for everyone. In a great spot, should continue to drink at this level for a while

Aperitif for a night that was focused on Spanish wines. Had this with our cheeses and olives.

Consistent with prior notes: Light gold. Lemon, bright citrus and ocean air on the nose. Interesting balance of citrus, tart fruits, and oyster shells/minerality.

Crowd was split on this wine - Albarino doesn't always hit the mark with those looking for a bigger white...

Light gold. Lemon and citrus notes (my daughter picked this up immediately) on both nose and plate. good acidity, will have it pear well with seafood and grilled chicken. Medium finish. Great QPR, paid $14 for this wine

Another taster noted "ocean air", which is spot on - I would have missed this without the reference. Summer is here soon...

Expressive but not overly sweet on the plate. Baked apples, honey, harvest spice. Medium finish. Very interesting...and delicious finish to a great evening.

Not attempting to rate as I have no palate comparisons. This is a fun way to finish an evening, our group loved it

This was really nice, crisp citrus lemon, mixed orchard fruits, some sweetness on mid palate, "sea salt". Creamy finish.

Paired with grilled Branzino and veggies, excellent pairing. Not sure how enjoyable this is on its own, as its very basic...Something about Greek wine makes it perfect with fish, so no complaints...

Last bottle in 2014, I thought it needed time. Paired with my fettuccini/bolognese sauce. Good reason to check in on this.Slow ox for 90 minutes, drank over an hour w Charlotte.

Purple/ruby color, slight fading. Nose showing dark and blue fruit, spices and oak. Ripe palate of black fruits, currants, brambly fruit, leather (?), floral/violets. Layered and creamy texture. Black cherry/mineral though the mid palate...Full body, medium/long finish.

Last tasting I thought this was too extracted. Cellar time has mellowed the excess - still a ripe and expressive wine. In a much better point now (IMO). Interesting to see the range of scores and notes. Likely just style preference, love it or hate it? Went well with the bolognese, needs richer foods for pairing. Should drink well for another decade
