2014 Birthday Wine Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Asia Square): Medium garnet with brownish hues and a little cloudy. Nose is very unique or rather suspicious, port like, coffee, nutty and a bit oxidize. And I thought it could be over the hill too. Surprisingly the palate slowly evolve to show cassis, nutty flavours and dried dark fruits. Still has some bodied and substance with plenty of acidity. Good finishing and almost dissolve tannins. Still holding and drinkable but not showing a lot of classic Bordeaux character like the 1978 Château La Croix St. Georges. A bit disappointed actually.
Not a popular wine during the dinner and it gradually faded after few hours.

70s French Wines (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, Forum): Tasted blind and it has an elegant and perfume bouquet, along with sweet ripe fruits, blackcurrant, earth and hints of vanilla oak and leafy notes.
On entry it has good sweetness and richness of fruits. Continue to develop in the glass, exhibits nuances of black currant, dried herbs, dried cherry, licorice and spice. Nice finesse support by lively acidity.
Long persistent finish with subtle spicy notes. Holding well and taste much younger. Good acidity and good mid-palate. Tonight's wine getting better and better.

Beautiful mature claret with brownish tinge, some herbaceous nose, with dried fruits, cedar and tobacco on the nose, smooth on the palate, really showing its aged with secondary development, but still drinking well at this moment, with good acidity backbone and velvety tannins.

My Birthday Dinner (Imperial Treasure Cantonese Cuisuine, Great World City): Sourced from a local online retailer who shipped it back from US. I decided to open this rare bottle on my birthday dinner as a special bottle of my birth year, and certainly I'm a bit cautious as few other reviews thought that it has past its prime. I am glad that it turned out fantastic for the night and everybody enjoyed so much on this wines.
This is in my opinion, first of three serious red during the night. Clear, dark ruby with some mahogany hues and amazingly youthful in the glass. It has a complex nose showing cherry, tobacco and cedar, subtle and not overpowering.
The palate is mellow and elegant, with sweet ripe fruits, cherry and tobacco. Amazingly the fruits is still holding well, unlike many other Bordeaux from the same vintage with fruits drying out. Soft acidity, integrated tannins and a long finish. This was truly a memorable bottle.

My 2013 birthday month tasting session (Extra Space, Boon Keng): Lifted bouquet of tobacco along with dried fruits and secondary notes. It has a nice entry and midpalate all driven by vibrant acidity. Tobacco, earth and dried fruits on palate, smooth and elegant. Still holding and nice to drink, with fine, mellow tannins and medium finish.

A casual Friday night wine session (Extra Space, Boon Keng): It has a good vibrant hue, clear ruby core and brick red tinge. Complex bouquet of earth, farmyard and leather interwoven with blackcurrant, sweet fruit, spice, red fruit and vanilla. Holding very well on palate still showing some freshness with a nice perfume edge, lots of blackcurrant, sweet fruits, slight farmyard and mushroom. Mellow down but showing good intensity with seamless mid-palate. Very lively acidity, velvety tannins and long lingering finish with roasted coffee aftertaste.
Another excellent aged Rioja from 1978, can still hold for another few more years.

Casual Wines Session on Thursday night (Extra Space, Boon Keng): Dark garnet colour with maturing brick red hues and amazingly it doesn't look like a 36 y.o. wine.
It smells hay and straw when openned, but with some air in the glass it reveals bouquet of blackcurrant, chinese medicinal and some cedar notes.
The palate also improve along the way, still holding up but mellow, with dried fruits, blackcurrant, tobacco and cedar. Medium+ finish with hints of mint and still showing some soft tannins.
Very impressive after it gets better in the glass after an hour.

70s French Wines (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, Forum): Dark ruby with mature brownish tinge.
Elegant nose, earth, soy sauce, sour cherry, blackcurrant, dried fruits and hints of licorice.
Still holding well on palate and showing good structure. Subtle mouth-feel, sour cherry, dusty earth and soy sauce. Very well balanced with good acidity. Long lingering finish with some spicy notes and fine tannins with soft grip.
A surprisingly good start to tonight's 70s French wines theme.

Casual Wines Session on Monday night (Extra Space, Boon Keng): Dark core with garnet hue. For a 36 yrs old wines it is still quite youthful on appearance. The nose is dominance by graphite, along with deried fruits, pencil lead, mineral and chalk. Again there is plenty of graphite on palate, with other secondary flavours like pencil lead, earth and dried fruits. Still vibrant acidity , soft chewy tannins and end with medium+ finish.

Mature colour with brownish hues, what a complex nose, herbaceous but loads of black currants, dried herds and smoke. It took a while to open up nicely, drinking well now and it still can be cellared for few more years. Smooth, loads of black currant and dried herbs on palate, very good mid palate and fine grained tannins with long finish.

8/14/2014 - hkm520240 wrote: 91 points

After 2 disappointed bottles we decided to open this. This is still good and having tried '70 and '79, Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most age-able Bordeaux and very consistent even in the off year.
Clear ruby with vibrant hues, showing a good appearance in contrast to the cloudy look from previous wines. Subtle bouquet of dried tobacco, red currant, a bit vegetal along with earth and forest floor. Although less attractive on the nose but the palate is nice and robust. Holding well with good acidity, plenty of blackcurrant, earth, and dried fruits. Gradually open up in the glass with air, very persistent aftertaste with fine grain tannins.

Tonight another Rhone vs Bordeaux and 1976 Château Malartic-Lagravière perform better than 1976 CDP.
Dark garnet with some mature hues but it looks younger than the Maurice Gentilhomme CDP '76, nice bouquet of dried herbs, blackcurrant and smoke. Some minerality on palate, with dried fruits, blackcurrant and slight bitterness. A nice mature Bordeaux still holding good acidity and soft tannins. This bottle was bought at unbelievable SGD75, smart buy but no more.

Another off bottle and in fact I prefer Lionel J. Bruck Grands-Echezeaux than this although both are flawed. Although my wine mates happily finished both wines that poured into his glass.
Dark ruby with cloudy appearance. The nose does not seems right too, with blackcurrant, herbaceous, vegetal, earth and some unpleasant element.
High acidity and the flavours profile is not a typical aged Bordeaux, fruits fading and shows a dry medium finish. I can only managed to finish half a glass.

Maturing dark ruby core with brown red hues. The nose is very herbaceous and vegetal, with some blackcurrant and dried beancurd underneath. Supple palate, but it is also herbaceous, along with graphite and soy sauce. Pretty dry on the mid-palate and the structure is still holding. Some chalkiness on the medium long finish.

Dark ruby with matured light mahogany rim but still vibrant. The bouquet is soft, elegant and develpred, blackcurrant, dried plum and sweet tobacco. Holding very well and still shows a solid entry with good acidity backbone, blackfruits, blackcurrant, dried fruits and subtle tobacco on palate. Fine tannins with a soft grip, very pleasant drinking with nice intensity on the midpalate. Slightly better than 70 Chasse-Spleen and 72 Les Forts de Latour but this is what I expect from a repectable Chateau in a good vintage. 94+
