B30; G5; 4*+8.5*+4.5+8.5*+9+5+4.5=94+; Some bricking in the color and predominantly a medium maroon edge to edge. This wine is very aromatic and sometimes when the glass has been down for a while there is a waft of cherry and red berry that hits and tempts the glass back to your lips. The aromas also have an earthiness reflective of both the terroir and the age. Palate is firm but smooth with lots of integrated tannin and mouth-coating richness and juicy acidity. Flavors are lush with ripe red fruit and lovely earthiness and minerality. Finish is extremely long, smooth, satisfying, juicy - just wonderful. With maybe 30-45 minutes of time open and 5-10 minutes resting in glass this is delicious and ready to drink. Will likely cellar for several more years, but why wait as it is very enjoyable right now.

4* Crystalline dark red velvet (Yes, I know, give me some slack);
8.9 red fruit + blueberry + cinnamon + black fruit coming forward with air + faint rich plum back note;
4.5 rich & smooth mouthfeel w/good acidic firmness;
8.9 flavors mirror aromas + richness + saturation;
8.5 really long finish w/no flaws;
4.5 balance?! Yeah! - next stupid scoring criteria!;
4.5 ageability - really? this is a $40 Village level wine that is 11+ years old and totally annihilates wines 3x the cost.
And only 13% alc. Take that Cali...
You know why you rarely see any '05 Burgundies on the secondary market? Because they are so effing good you would have to be dead or out of your mind to sell them rather than drink them.

This is an '05 which is still closed and unyielding. First the color, which is a remarkably deep ruby to plum, with only slight lightening to magenta at the rim. The nose never really showed much, though there is some notion of black raspberry and clayey earth. The palate is full and has a lot of grippy extract and acidic structure. The balance seems to be there, but this simply needs more time in the cellar.

2006 Burgundy with a few additions (Noizé, London): Nose is restrained but some red fruits and subtle Christmas spices emerge. Palate starts tight and short but with time in the glass opens out and broadens. For me in this flight, this and the the Tollot Beaut SLB Lavieres are very close qualitatively for 20 mins but this wine pulls away.

Nine red 2006 Burgs (Noize): A darkish, brambly but well-balanced wine with a lot of oddball charm. A good weight of sweet, dark fruit, some game and forest floor, then slightly drying on the finish. One of the best reds tonight.

Lovely, still quite youthful nose, ripe dark fruit, touch of meat, medium/full bodied, mouthfilling, dark fruit, fine tannins, quite full but crackling with energy, really good length.

Wonderful bottle of wine, though clearly too young. Intoxicating nose of strawberries and cherries, really a joy. Strong acidity and tannins, with solid fruit and some earth components. Wonderful bottle of wine.

Black fruit on nose. Rather disappointing wine, or rather quite off balance. Tannins and alcohol both poorly contained by the fruit. Certainly a young wine, might come into it's own down the road, but I'm under the impression that an off balance wine will always be such...

Bottle stored for 2 days in a semi-warm basement when cellar cooling unit failed. Chilled then popped and poured to accompany picnic dinner. Violet-purple color. Nose of grapey blackberry smells, potent and primary. Palate full and energetic, showing loads of blackberry and raspberry fruit accompanied by racy acidity and vibrant minerally structure. Tannins in evidence but not overwhelming, finish marked mostly by fruit. This not only survived, it had some pizazz.

Light cranberry color. Raspberry and mint on the nose. Also some funk, maybe sweat and also an herbaceousness. Like briars or blackberry vines. Flavors suddenly harder to perceive. There is nice acidity and herbal flavors. A bit of black cherry. Light in the mouth. But moderately tannic. I'm not experienced with Burgundy which might account for my difficulty here. I like the wine though. It is certainly challenging.

Originally tried this a year ago, and it was so ungiving as to be difficult to enjoy. Still very tight nose and initially thought it was flawed/slightly corked, but this opened up over 90 minutes to show forest, mushroom and mint aromas with red fruit, and moderate weight in the mouth. The finish was a little short, but still with enough fruit to carry it thru. Very much Pommard character, but without the opulence of the 2005s I have had. Not up to 1er cru quality, but good nonetheless. I would give this another 2 years before trying again, then expect a window of 5-7 years to drink

I had this wine over two days and it was closed on day 1, even with some air. However, on day 2 it was open and delicious. A tasty Pommard that has the usual earthy character with juicy fruit. This is about ready to go, but will easily hold for years.

Opened (but not decanted) for about 2 hours before the first glass. Extremely light in color, but that was expected. On the nose sous bois, cherries and a bit of funk.
On the palate this is fairly simple with red fruits, black tea and a great acidity. Not a memorable finish but fair. Went really well with duck breast in a cherry sauce.

Light translucent ruby in the glass; beautiful nose, with a forest floor/decayed leaf note and vibrant cherry fruit - quite complex.

Light-bodied on the palate. Still with decent acidity, but the fruit you get so prominently on the nose has faded on the palate. No doubt past peak, and yet still pleasurable as we near it's 30th "birthday".

A light translucent ruby in the glass. Quintessential Burgundian nose, with earthy red and black fruits and an undergrowth/decayed leaf note as well - the kind of nose where you don't want to taste the wine because in all likelihood it will fall short of this level of sensory pleasure. An autumnal nose, if that makes any sense.

Actually, this is still pretty tasty, albeit not at the level of the bouquet. This is in "drink up" territory if you still have it, but is still a worthwhile glass of wine at this point. I believe I have one bottle left, and it will get consumed sometime over the next six months.

For whatever reason, the '88 vintage tends to get overlooked in both Burgundy and Bordeaux, yet in my experience both vintages have a lot of nice wines that are drinking well today.

Benoit Ente 2011 Whites and Aleth Girardin 2008 Reds (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Light ruby. Attractive light char, dark red fruit, and soil on the nose. Light but overlying flesh, cherries and once again the earth that the aromatics suggest. A really good 2008 without the jarring acidity and skinniness of so many other wines from this vintage.

From Coravin. Wild blackberry, earth, grape must, almost a touch of rosehip tea and muscovado sugar. That wild blackberry note translates to the palate rather well with plenty of pleasing heft behind it. Still quite youthful for me, dense, juicy and enjoyable. Travels long. Yum now or wait.

Coravin fun - Burgundy (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Pretty, creamy, slightly jubey black fruits, fruit tea and sweet spice, touch of caramel in the background, freshly tilled earth and, with time, a little tomato leaf. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, muted black fruits, plenty of slightly chalky textured grip, the fruit persists beneath this, long, those slight caramel and tomato leaf notes join on the finish. Getting to 'tidy-up' time...
