Old World Grab Bag (Dino Restaurant - Washington, DC): Oily nose. Petroleum based product - lacquer, house paint? Very sherry-like. Also honeysuckle, anise and florals. Viscous, honey, aggressive acid. Finishes kinda funky. Guessed correctly to be Loire Chenin Blanc.

You probably want to either decant this bottle or enjoy over multiple days. I would also reccommend ensuring it is under room temp so that the alcohol doesn't start to show.

Notes from day 2.
Purple in color.
Nose of black raspberry, black olive, brine, seared meat.
Palate of black raspberry, tar, black olive, brine, seared meat, herb and pepper.
The finish was long in length, nice mouthfeel, maybe a little low on acid, but that is more due to the warm vintage than anything else.
Overall the wine was solid, really well made wine by Matt.

Notes from day 2. Dark red to purple in color. Nose of lavender, mixed black berries, moist loam, some minerality. Palate had black currant, black licorice, moist loam, minerality, baker's chocolate toward the back with some more rounded tannins noticed. The finish long and the bitterness that was noticed on day 1 is not present at all. Quite a femine wine, that hid the 15.2 well, and had an excellent mouthfeel. A really impressive showing for my first QC. Hold because it improved over the time it was opened, but I will admit I was suprised at how approachable this was when first opened other than the slightly bitter tannin. 50+5+13+18+9

Blind OLD WORLD GRAB BAG - Dino Restaurant (Washington, DC): Medium apple juice in color. Nose of diesel, oxidative, red apple, lacquer, smoke. Palate of older red apple, oxidative, honey, smoke, white pepper/minerality. Viscous and a nice mouth feel, was much better the first time around as when this warmed up to room temp the alcohol showed up. Loved the complexity.

3/27/2010 2:54:00 PM - That's exactly what I was saying, good wine, but later in the night I noticed the alcohol creep up and hadn't noticed any the first time around and that was on a fresh palate.

Color: A transluscent Violet with a light ruby rim

Smell: Earth, smoke, violets, black pepper, olives, and sweet oak

Taste: Faint vanilla leads into blackberries, blueberries, licorice, and bloody meat.

Overall: A very well made wine that offers structure and a clear "new world" frame without being over the top or feeling uber-extracted. This is a very elegant Syrah that reminds me what it is I truly love about this grape. There can be power and elegence in the same wine that will stand up well to a simple grilled steak or could easily support many vegitarian dishes...well done

Notes from day 1. Pale gold in color. Nose of apricot, little funky furry animal, & minerality. Palate of apricot, minerality, little petrol funk, lanolin, white pepper. The finish is long and the balance is great for being an 8 year old Gruner. The mouthfeel is different as it comes off very coating. Interesting wine to say the least, look forward to trying some of his other wines. Will check back tomorrow to see if this changes at all. Drink. 50+5+12+16+8

Had at Joel in ATL. No formal notes. Was red with bricking with color. Nose was excellent with tons of barnyard/manure, little dried cherry, a little herb as well. Palate had dried cherry, game, barnyard earth, basil, and a little old dusty chocolate toward the end that started to emerge the longer it was open. The finish to the wine was very long , tannin was still noted, and the mouthfeel was unreal. Was really impressed by this wine and will be looking for more older vintage Musars as I think they do age well.

Had at Joel's in ATL. No formal notes and first time with the Blanc. Dark yellowish-orange in color, cork in good shape. Nose of slight oxidation, little honey, citrus, wax, & minerality. Palate was similar with orange peel, hint of pineapple, touch of honey, wax, minerality, little white pepper. Nice mouthfeel and above average finish. Improved over the time it was open. Definately an oxidised style, but pleasant.

5/6/2010 5:41:00 PM - I liked this wine, but good to know they need air. Reminded me a little of Joly's wines, but not as oxidized as they tend to be. Will be looking for more of these.

Wow. This wine is really singing right now. Compared with my last tasting, the oak has fully integrated (for my palate at least). Lots of chocolate and dark, dark fruit. Showing a little bit of leather that I didn't get before. Perhaps some complexity coming out with some additional age. But this is really on a plateau right now and should be there for a few years yet. But hard to imagine it getting any better. Rich, long and satisfying.

3/8/2010 7:24:00 PM - Glad to see this is showing well right now as I plan on popping this against a Catena Single vineyard Nicassa from the same year just to see how they are doing and if there is that much difference.

Dark red to purple color. Really nice nose of red berry, dill, herb, spice. On the palate there more red fruit, raspberry, cherry, spice and ALCOHOL. Correctly guessed Cali because of the heat. Really disappointing with the sticker on this wine, I guess WS had it right for a change. (88)

3/27/2010 2:49:00 PM - This was from a Pinot blind tasting so didn't really choose when to taste. There was an older 02 Smoke present and I couldn't even tell it was a Pinot as it was very Rhone like on the nose. Was kinda shocked as other 07's showed much better IMO.

My first Cameron...definitely not my last. Maybe my fav domestic Chard yet. Chablis-like nervousness and brightness. But, also the depth and heaviness of a white Burg. Apple. pineapple, lemon, minerals, nuts, and chalk. Nice acidity and a long impressive finish. Cried out for cheese.

This is my favorite producer from the area and I have yet to be disappointed with any bottling. Plus the price is always right IMO. Been a while since we saw you or Darren over at WLTV, cheers.

Small blind taste.
Darker fruit on the nose and palate.
Oak and hot.

1/6/2013 10:55:00 AM - Easy, to me it was overly oaked and it tasted hot (ie high alcohol). To put into perspective this was an event where 30+ VA wines and ringers were tasted blind in a random order. The bottle could of been served at a higher room temperature then it should of been, but I can only rate the wine on what I tasted. This probably also has to do somewhat to personal preference to style of wine, but when I notice high alcohol and too much oak its a big turn off for me.
