3/22/2023 - Rieslingfan wrote: NRIt’s the Electric Muskateller Acid Test! This is crazy vivid, putting to shame the term “aromatic varietal.” It’s not just aromatic, but it evokes visuals. It’s a swirling vortex of pink grapefruit, quince, sassafras, lychee and sweet herbs. Anyone old enough to recall a kaleidoscope can understand the intensely colorful visual, which here is translated to smell and taste. It’s been a long time since I tasted a Muscat this intense, probably back to the Hans Gunter Schwarz days at Catoir. It’s a bit of a revelation to experience it again, with digital clarity but analog depth. |

5/25/2023 - huse Likes this wine: 93 pointsA spectacular, organically farmed dry Muskateller wine (100 percent), sourced from the red sandstone soils of the Bürgergarten vineyard (located in the hamlet of Haardt, city of Neustadt an der Weinstraße). The wine spent twelve months on the fine lees in stainless steel tank. Bright, pale silver-yellow in color and enormously complex bouquet offering intense aromas of white flowers, lychee, peach, orange zest, fresh cut grass and a hint of smoke. The extremely refined and well-balanced palate offers a medium-bodied wine displaying abundant elderberry and tropical fruit, sweet spices, an amazing depth and a wonderful supporting acidity. Long mineral finish with a slight touch of flint. An absolutely stunning Muskateller wine that is beautifully drinkable now, but it has the bones to age for another two-three years. Impossible not to like this wine. |

This is quite good right now and impressive but needs to uncoil a bit more. Its dry mineral extract make my favorite whites from Chablis taste like Spatlese in comparison. You drink this and realize chardonnay really isn't that dry :). I still prefer chardonnay but this is truly intriguing and eye opening. 13% alc |

I keep trying to recreate that experience at Grand Sichuan so many years ago when I tasted this wine for the first time, and tonight, I finally managed to taste it again. This bottle reached those same heights. So incredibly complex and textural, with a kaleidoscope of ripe and tropical fruits on the nose and palate. Plenty of spice too, and behind it just the right amount of sweetness and acidity to get this surprisingly weighty riesling airborne. An obvious testament to the winemaking prowess of HGS. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

Very seldom am I convinced by a dry riesling, but this is certainly one of the few times I have been. Simply put, this is on the same scale as the epic 2134, but just without the sugar. Everything's here. There's stuffing up the wazoo, with tons of weird almost non-riesling flavours, like passion fruit and mangoes, but a host of typical things as well like pineapple and Thai herbs. Bone dry, with tons of acidity, finishing with some zippy tart pineapple. Simply kaleidoscopic. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

It's got that spicy, scratchy, almost feral Rieslaner wildness, as well as very ripe peach, apricot jam richness. Imagine if someone added a dollop of horseradish spiked with Sriracha to the jam! It brings back taste memories from a blind tasting well more than a decade ago. Delicious wine that is oddly static. Time standing still in the bottle. |

You know that episode of Rick and Morty where Morty asks for a love potion but then Jessica has a cold so everyone gets infected with the mutated love virus and then Rick tries to reverse the effects of it but ends up turning everyone into Cronenbergs? This is Cronenberg riesling. Hilariously massive. Totally overripe, and completely in balance. 200 g/L of sugar, 20 g/L of acid? Probably not far off. If this was made in the old days, you could probably slap a Trockenbeerenauslese on the label as well as the Eiswein. Descriptors? Who cares? 3 people found this helpful, do you? 1/18/2018 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NROff the list at The Bachelor Farmer in Minneapolis (Very Highly Recommended). Lighter straw color, clear. Typical aromas and flavors that run the white and citrus fruit spectrums with the added bonus of the grape's signature floral aromatics, as well. Dry, light>medium-bodied, with an average finish. Good acidity, already very available, i.e. nothing austere, and very good with soup, salad course or on its own. 11,5% abv., thru 2018; would gladly drink again. recommended |

4/26/2020 - Rieslingfan wrote: NRThis time when I went to the wine cellar, I wore my glasses, and so selected the intended wine. The 2001 Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese comes from the swan song vintage for the legendary HGS at Catoir. Time tends to create a different view of these wines, imbuing them with an unnatural, nearly magical level of power. Perhaps that’s due to the Rieslaner and Scheurebe, which often have more richness and, especially for the Rieslaner, weight. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

8/9/2015 - JeffGMorris Likes this wine: 98 pointsAP #12-93. From 375ml. Dark gold to Amber in color, this wine was phenomenal. Loaded with aromas and flavors of quince, peach, oranges, caramel-coated green apples, tropical fruits and manuka honey. Clearly a dessert wine but plenty of acidity to wash it off the palate and leave an extremely long glow in the mouth that added a strong note of butterscotch. One of the finest dessert wines I've had and that says an lot given my penchant for sweet wines. Drinking on a perfect plateau right now but should easily drink very well for another 2-3 decades. 50+15+14+9.5+9.5=98 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

11/27/2020 - Chomsky wrote: NRFrom Seth, in two small bottles, blind. This was fucking awesome. The nose sparkled with 1990s HGS magic so I nailed that immediately. A first taste and I was onto auslese, maybe 1998? Seth led me back in time and I guessed 1990 because of its reputation for great wines with impeccable balance, and this had it in spades. I leaned Rieslaner because of the spicy/horseradishy nose, but that impression was significantly less than I am used to in these MC rieslaners, so I course corrected to riesling. Wrong. This is the best rieslaner I have ever had. I am more accustomed to the heavier weight pradikats, which typically have the density of motor oil - one of the two poles of the HGS barbell. At the (relatively) lighter auslese ripeness, this had extraordinary grace and poise for such a massively flavored wine. The palate presence was simply ethereal. Total stunner, Seth calls it 97 points but I think its an easy 42.3 billion. |

But it still makes for an absolutely outstanding bottle of riesling. Mild tropical fruit notes here, with a little bit of passionfruit and mango, but generally a riper disposition and showing a little headiness especially for riesling. Moderate sweetness, fully resolved, and the freshness isn't as prominent as in the best bottles. |

Yet despite the concentration and opulence and complexity--in addition to fruit this shows smoke and real savory deliciousness--the overall impression is pretty suave. Indeed, the real hallmark of this wine is it's energy: it has bright acids, intense minerality, and it drives to the finish like a jet engine. Awesome in every way. |

Didn't get the brown sugar/intense honeyed elements here that I had noted from that... instead, this is all about remarkably fresh, still primary Rieslaner fruit - an array of apricots, peaches, and other orchard fruits, tinged with florality and high toned gingery and horseradish-like spicy notes. Flamboyant yet impeccably balanced, with plenty of sweetness matched by a powerful spine of acidity. Stunning wine. These HGS Catoirs are always such a pleasure. |

2/9/2019 - winequant Likes this wine: 93 pointsI think I’m finally starting to really understand the Pfalz. The wines have a much more burnished fruit character, certainly more exotic than Mosel which has a more mineral/salt water characteristic to its fruit flavors. What this perhaps lacks in transparency, more than makes up for with just sheer fleshy intensity. The color on this was deep golden, the flavors were like mango and pineapple with a touch of sugar brûléed on top. But there is a cooling minty touch, a little hyssop perhaps? I think this is in a perfect spot right now. Splendid. |
