  • 2014 Cascina Roccalini Barbaresco Roccalini

My last of 3 and stellar! Slow-oxed in blt & Burg glasses for 3hrs prior to dinner. This is one of those head-scratching wines that continues to escape much fervor by most wine drinkers. Which excepting Giacosa is also true about Barbaresco in general. I remember finding Piedmont difficult to understand 15yrs ago. Barbera, Barbaresco, Barolo? None of it made sense to me, then. That was then & this is now. I loved this tonight with its grace, excellent aromatics & wonderful red fruit. Personally, I like this better than Produttori's Barbaresco. If for no other reason, these drink earlier. But, I also find more refinement to boot. I have way more Produttori than Roccalini and surely wish it was the other way around. This is the "poor man's version" of Giacosa IMO. Love it! I need to find a few more. Paid $42, easily drinks like $75+. 14%alc.

  • 2014 Domaine Robert Chevillon Bourgogne

Bit of a disappointment. I'm usually a raving fan of this cuvee but this btl seems to be on the downslide. Never over fruited but this one was missing some fruit period. Just not usual sense of harmony and balance I've come to expect from Chevillon. Earlier btls were much better. 2 left, I'll try another later this year again.

  • 2011 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut Rosé

My local "big group" Sunday dinner. Theme was"CA wines not from Napa". And, we got a fun range to share at BLVD Kitchen. I love Roederer Estates basic Rose and drink that often. Can't remember ever having the L'Ermitage cuvee rose but I loved it tonight. Very elegant & ethereal presentation. Like this way more than the L'Emitage Brut which always taste sort of disjointed. This rose' is more what you'd expect from Roederer. Reminds me a lot of the French version. 93+ Thanks Gary!

10/27/2023 10:06:00 AM - Thanks for noticing Harley! Think my 9yr old grandson is hooked on fly fishing now too! He caught 6 that day all similar in size. Out on the Big Thompson River a few miles outside of Estes Park in a gorgeous rushing river canyon. Fond memory! Best Craig/ chablis28

8/30/2023 4:25:00 AM - I've always wanted to see the Boundary Waters and likely never will as I'm a mosquito magnet and not a great camper. Loved camping as a Boy Scout 55+ yrs ago but can't sleep a wink on the ground these days as I found out on some overnight climbs in the Tetons. I should see if I can just do some sort of guided day trip into the BW:). Yea, if I hadn't had back to back wine dinners Saturday & Sunday and one at The Kenwood I'd have joined you for sure. Jan/Feb 2025 in Fl is almost a sure thing and well get together. Best Craig/chablis28

8/29/2023 3:42:00 AM - Thanks Craig. I was in the Boundary Waters fishing the last few days. Had wonderful weather and am back in FL now. Sorry the Kenwood did not work for you but we had a lovely time. Thank you again for the recommendation. Ironically, I had a business meeting in the exact neighborhood you describe before the dinner which was perfect. Please do look me up when you are in Florida next. Thanks again!

8/22/2023 6:37:00 AM - Thank you cdudley14! Sorry for the delayed response I was in western Wi fly fishing till 7pm last night and missed this till now. I'd love to do it but with 2 other wine dinners this week my wife would not be pleased. I'm usually a twice a month wine dinner guy but this week has an old wine friend in town that we scheduled a couple dinners around, so Nita made it clear I'm done for August with a dinner this past Sunday & 2 addl diners this week already planned. Otherwise, I'd be totally in. Hope you enjoy your visit and that The Kenwood lives up to my praise. Nita & I will be there Saturday with old wine friends Tom & Deb from LeCadeau Vineyards in Oregon. They lived here for 20yrs before moving to Oregon. Highly likely were back in Florida in winter 2025 again. PS take a walk around Lake of the Ilse afterwards. The trail is just a couple blocks east of The Kenwood. Lots of cool mansions surround the lake. I've seen the CEO of Target dinning at The Kenwood kitchen bar so maybe he lives in the neighborhood. A neighborhood way out of my league :). Craig

8/21/2023 11:28:00 AM - Hi Craig. Short notice and small chance but we may have an opening at our table tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Kenwood. In the off chance you were open to joining us (3-4 people), I could happily check a bag and bring a 2010 Rav Clos on my flight tomorrow morning... The dinner is not wine enthusiasts so to speak. But would be fun to give me an excuse to bring something special and I would be happy to do so! In the off chance you have interest, please let me know the best way to reach you directly. And if not, maybe another time!

8/18/2023 9:51:00 AM - cdudley14, you're welcome. Next time I'm in Florida I'll definitely see if we can connect. This winter our vacation takes us to northwest Maui for a week but next year may be another trip to Fl. And, I'd be happy to drink AOC Chablis with you but a RAV Clos would be the icing on the cake, dream wine to be sure :). I've only otherwise had the MDT & the Butteaux that I recall. cheers Craig/chablis28

8/18/2023 9:33:00 AM - Thanks Craig. This is a very thoughtful list and perfect reference points for me. What a cool community this is to be able to connect and share . Looking at your dream wines in your profile. I have a number of 2010 Rav Clos (purchased at the source). If you are ever in Central Florida, I would be more than happy to share with you. Thanks again!

8/13/2023 7:34:00 PM - Hey cdudley14, you picked the right time of year to visit MN! Here are my favs. Compare with your friends if they're local or check google ratings too. 1. The Kenwood - just off Lake of the Isle. Very BYOB friendly and reliably great service & execution. My all-round fav restaurant in the Twin Cities. 2. Tilia for a very casual fun menu about 1/4 mile from Lake Harriet in South Minneapolis neighborhood. Has nice cozy small patio too. Very BYOB friendly. Tiny place so don't bring more than 6. 3. Spoon & Stable is our most NYC / big city like restaurant with a very cool room. Located in the Downtown MPLS warehouse district. Corkage $30-35 btl. 4. COV Edina for seafood. Great crab cakes. Easy parking in a first-tier suburb just off 494. 5. Ciao Bella - Bloomington (large Suburban place ) but great execution of food and service. Best patio in town. A large patio but with its gardens feels very cozy. 6. Martina - cool vibe in south Minneapolis neighborhood with very solid menu and service. 7. Saint Genevieve in south Minneapolis neighborhood. Small cozy and fun. tiny patio is cool too. Very BYOB friendly. 8. Billys in the Minneapolis warehouse district for best sushi. I love all of these for different reasons. Hope that helps! Have fun. 2/23/2022 7:22:00 AM - AMC Eagle, thanks for the ideas in and around Sante Fe region. A couple on my list already but lots of fresh ideas I'll definitely look into. And, yep that VT is drinking well now with air but it should improve quite a bit going forward, IMO. Best Craig/chablis28

  • AMC Eagle says:

2/22/2022 10:32:00 AM - Hi chablis28/Craig! Your note on the 2010 Vieux Telegraphe convinced me to not open my lone bottle yet. :) Yes, I lived and work in Los Alamos before moving to Colorado Springs. I loved northern New Mexico. Lots of outdoorsy things there - where I lived, Bandelier and Valles Caldera are great places to go to. Some restaurants I liked: El Paragua(in Chimayo), Luminaria(by Loretto), Jambo Cafe(for non-New Mexican food), Tomasitas, Maria's, and Horseman's Haven for breakfast. There are definitely more that I've frequented whose names escapes me. In Taos, def check out Doc Martin's and the Gorge bridge. Wine-wise, there are a couple of wineries by Dixon(on the way to Taos if you take the back way north of Santa Fe) that are fun to visit(La Chirapada, Black Mesa, etc). And of course, my favorite liquor store Kokomans for their nice wine selections north of Santa Fe. Regards AMC Eagle/Michael

11/28/2017 4:47:00 PM - I haven't had the '08 yet. I suspect it will be better. The '07 was really quite hot (14.5%). I have 2 '08,s not sure when I'll open them! Much too young at this point.

11/20/2017 11:24:00 AM - Thanks for your response, I reached out to Envoyer. We go to Italy often to visit the wineries and winemakers. Please let me know if you would like to collaborate.

  • chablis28 says:

11/20/2017 4:51:00 AM - Hi Neal, Envoyer is an LA (mostly online) wine retailer and probably the best retailer I've found for a guy my age who really shouldn't be buying every new release. They don't seem to stock anything but rather find interesting lots from great old school Burg, BDX and Piedmont producers and offer them at the lowest retail cost/markups. They do a lot of champagne too. They also buy a lot of back vintages ( and cellars). They frequently offering BDX from the 80s/90s and many Burgs from recent back vintages of 02,05,06,07 and 08. You should sign up for their emails and see what you think.

11/11/2017 8:58:00 PM - Hi Chablis28, if you ever come to Europe or Singapore I will share the Rousseau Ruchottes 01 - used to have 6, I have 4 left I think.

  • AGELVIS says:

8/28/2017 8:37:00 AM - Chablis28, Thank you for the kind invite. I was visiting MN back in July, but I'm now enjoying the rain in College Station, Texas. I would have loved to participate. If you're on Vivino, I'm AgElvis there as well. I'll follow you if you ping me. Look me up next summer and I'll bring a bottle over. Cheers!!!

  • Burgundy Al says:

3/19/2017 12:38:00 PM - Chablis, I've only had the Rousseau 2010 Gevrey AC once, and that was before it was even bottled, so tough to compare. With that said, 2010 is a magical vintage for Rousseau and 2014 is "just" very, very good.
