Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

It’s been 2 years since my last bottle. Muted at first but opened up after about 30min of decanting. Nose of medium red fruits, milk chocolate and some terroir. On the palette, it’s still somewhat tannic and shut down but with notes of red berries, chocolate and integrated oak. The foundation is there for a long life. I’d keep these sleeping for at least another 3-4 years and see where it’s at then.

Ultimately, I feel confident about this one’s potential from the superb 2016 tuscan chianti vintage. Still happy to have a case. And it paired perfectly with Neapolitan style pizza tonight. As others have mentioned great QPR. I’ve tried the 2017 and it wasn’t as good. 2016 has more of everything including potential. Tastes like a $50 bottle.

Update: If you are going to open up this bottle, give it between 1-1.5 hours in the decanter. After finishing this tasting note (1.5 hours later), it has opened up nicely and mellowed out. An actual great bottle. 90pts before, 91pts now.

For a ~$20 Chianti, this is as good as it gets. Deep dark cherry fruit, dried herbs, a little earth and some refreshing acidity. Good balance and flow. It has a good structure but is not austere at this stage at all. If you are looking for something simple and quaffable to go along with marinara sauce - pizza and pasta - this might be a little overkill, but it isn't so stupendous that I'm going to have a good quality bistecca with it either. It is somewhere in between in quality. A very good Chianti Classico.

This really needs air to show its true depth and character. Beautiful CC in a perfect vintage. Has similarities with southern Rhone 2016 in terms of amazing balance and drinkability, and hidden structure and tannin underneath a perfect fresh and animating mouth. Simply amazing and such an unbeliavable bargain for the price at 7€ on sale. Great ageing potential (-2032). 93+

Consistent with previous tastings/note, except that it has opened up a bit. And a distnict minty note and that it has such quality tannin, simply great.
Better than the most of the high level wines from the same producer. Very enjoyable now due to its freshness and the mild bite from the tannin, will be hard to save bottles for later although it certainly has the potential. 92-93

A lot of purity on the nose and palate, ripe cherries, hints of anise, iron, minerality — the palate has a bit of baking spice on the mid-palate, but it’s in the check and doesn’t mask anything. Ends with a touch of brighter cranberry and brisk red fruit. Medium bodied, high tannins, they’re not astringent, but they are noticeable.

Purity and clarity here are really strong. I think a little more depth would bring it to that next level, but it’s very good.

Medium color. Lovely nose of cherries, violets, and earthy notes, like really nice pipe tobacco? Tannins up front and subdued but nice fruits. Even without breathing, this is a lovely wine— not my usual impression of young Chianti. With breathing, the wine becomes richer and seems to have some creamy notes. After 90 minutes in the glass, the creamy notes drop and it just becomes a beautiful glass of plums and enough acid/tannins to call out for a bowl of pasta or cheese. Fruits are dark plums, earth, and a touch of cocoa. Clear and balanced acidity and tannins. Good finish. Unlike a lot of inexpensive Chianti, this is really “yummy”. Pro tip: if you have some awesome olive oil, use tip— the fat balances against the tannins and acidity amazingly. Despite how great it is now, what I’m reading says a good Classico should peak around 8-10 years (2024-2026)? Maybe I’ll store a few bottles and see how they do...

Much smoother and sophisticated than I expected. Great value. This wine has been under rated imho. It is a $20 bottle after all. Opened up nicely over the first hour but enjoyable right after opening. I backed up the truck on this one so I look forward to enjoying this wine over the coming years. Not getting any barnyard just lovely black currant and delicious dark cherry representing a modern affordable, drinkable chianti. Strangely i disagree with many of the tasting notes and low scores on this wine. Maybe WS haters. Great with gourmet burgers.

Initially a long term Coravin experiment, opened aprox September last year. Very tight, fruit needs coaxing to bring out, tons of acidity and a firm backbone.

It has shed some baby fat since and seemingly put on weight and density since its first tasting. Like a kid hitting the gym over the summer and coming back with 10lbs of muscle! Darker notes of fruit (went from bright red to dark cherries), chocolate, expresso, some herbs and singed iron. The finish is long and the integration has improved with the acidity and tannins coming together. You'd be hard fought to find a better wine at this price!

Creditable Chianti Classico in drink now/ready status.
Not the best you'll ever had, but for the price, great QPR.
Totally varietally correct, maybe not quite as robust or a fruit
bomb as some, but that's what made it so attractive.
Not timid, but elegant.

I managed to get a couple more bottles of this. Has deep aromas of flowers, raspberries, bricks, coffee hints and cherries. Its medium bodied elegant weightless yet fullish red and blue fruits palate has got good layering, a satiny feel and ends longish, fresh and tapering. 13%. Got this for 16 Euros but is worth the extra cost. Lay down 2-5 years+. Needs 60-90 mins aeration to shine. This Pinotes for me which is a good thing!

My last bottle of 12 and the best one (still have Il Grigio). One and one half hour decant. Mostly translucent ruby, darkness in middle. Red and darker berries on the nose. Med bodied, balanced, fleshy, rich. Moderate complexity and very delicious. What you want in an entry level chianti that only cost - get this - 14 bucks. Possibly the best base level chianti from San Felice in years. This wine was one of the Wine Spectators's wines of the year for 2018. While I don't usually follow that publication, I was looking for an inexpensive chianti and purchased a case. At the price asked, it should have been two (although I agree with others that Il Grigio (a Riserva) is usually the cuvee to get). This has served as a cellar saver for nearly four years. ADDENDUM: Give this 2 hours of air, to see it at its best. I have adjusted the rating accordingly - but it does require 2 hours. Very high QPR. (89-92).

Decanted.
The nose presents with moderate scents of cherry that has a slightly dried quality, wild berry, cranberry, spice, florals and rose hip that also have a slightly dried quality, earth, iron, graphite, leather and seasoned wood.
The palate has a nice pop of intensity upon entry and shows above moderate acidity along with firm, rustic and chewy tannins. Moderate mid-palate density. Flavors show spice accented notes of bitter cherry, cranberry and wild berries that come with notes of bramble, dried rose, earth, iron, leather and wood. The finish hangs in with chewy tannins.

Consistent with previous notes. Fruit holding up with nice ripe grippy black tea tannins. In a good spot drink up. Very good even if slightly overrated by WS.

For a few dollars more prefer their Riserva il Grigio.

Cherries, cherries, cherries! Already, approchable, this is a lovely (classic?) example of Chianti Classico, with just-right hints of leather and underbrush. But mostly, this is about the fine fresh cherry flavor. Delicious, and wonderful with spaghetti and meatballs.

Really hate to pile on here since I have 3 more, drank day 1 w/1.5 hrs decant paired w/Italian then again day 4 w/bruschetta & burgers. Simply disappointing for a #19 Top 100 WS94, plus other critics' acclaim. There were classical elements to enjoy here and there - a little anise, dark cherry-berry, tobacco, etc. - which I could catch for a sip or 2 but not consistently...just no cohesive identity or balance or elegance one should expect. Perhaps it's more bottle variation as mentioned, or simply not all that great, definitely going to give them another year or 2 and really scrutinize next few bottles.

Classic flavors of tobacco, tart red cherries and dusty horse blanket, but this bottle was unpleasantly disjointed, even with air and food. Hot and bitter, hoping just bottle variation based on the good reviews from others, but some cellar time couldn't hurt.

Got a shipment of this from Garagiste around two months ago and seems to have settled nicely. For a $14 Chianti this is right on - juicy, medium tannins and acidity and fresh cherry and light plum fruit. Has a little wood influence which dries things out a little, but overall a tasty wine for the price.

90 points - This is the second bottle we've opened and this has progressed nicely since we last tried it. I like a good amount of grip but the first bottle was very tight even after decanting for over an hour. This one still had significant tannins and acidity but it was much more balanced with dusty cherry and a bit of leather coming through.

Half-hour decant. Ruby. Sweet red fruits. Red fruits, acid, earth. Sumptuous, light-medium bodied, soft tannin. Some length. Now ready to drink. Lovely. ** With another hour of air, more complex; much better. This was an amazing chianti value. Give it air. My score reflects the wine at the half-hour point.
