2011 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

Red Rhone Blend more

Initial acidic edge dissipates within 15 minutes. Then classic Pegau characteristics shine through. Dark fruits show weight without heaviness, and a complex array of graphite, licorice, Earl Grey tea, and fresh herbs is backed by sweet tannins.
Compared to other vintages that I have tried, 2006 and 2010, animalistic components (gaminess and blood) are not as pronounced in this vintage. 2011 bursts with flowers. It is insanely floral, no less. In that sense, it is prettier than 2006 and 2010, but is perhaps less intriguing and less thought provoking.
To summarize, I must say this is darn delicious. God bless Domaine du Pegau.

2013 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Well, I think this wine is fantastic. It displays sweet tannins, fresh acidity, and a great balance. It is full body with dark berries, licorice, fresh flowers, asphalt, and bubble gum. There aren't enough earthy/green notes to make the wine appear Bordeaux-like, but oak is completely under control (or totally masked by the fruit).
I'm thinking 94 points (I usually find Galloni's reviews well aligned with my palate).

I really enjoyed this bottle. It's an incredibly well-balanced wine. Freshness is still there, and it's got a great precision and a high complexity. Tertiary notes are there, but they are only slightly balsamic. Mineral laden blackberries, dark cherries, herbs, game, and spices are interwoven in an utter deliciousness that lasts a while on the palate. 14.5% alc

Not so dense, yet this has layers of flavors - roasted coconut slices, canned pineapple, honeydew, that yellow Juicy Fruit chewing gum, spring flowers, and natural soap. It is well balanced and complex, and it has some depth.

Richness and weight exist without a trace of heaviness. Dark berries, cedar wood, herbs, fresh raw meat, and gentle spices come through. Acidity is low making it drinkable on its own. Flavor profile is incredibly complex.

2013 Primus The Blend

Apalta Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/12/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

Primus offers a reliable and consistent quality throughout vintages. Trying this after almost 3 years, I realize that my palate has moved away even farther from this style of wine; it is too oaky, cinnamon-cream-puffy, and manipulated for my taste. However, I can see how it may appeal to the crowd as it has that "smooth" factor. To me, this tastes like a chocolate and vanilla milk shake.
If you enjoy oaky California reds (Sebastiani comes to mind), you may like this wine. Given the style and right expectations, it is a good value.

I love the minerals and cedar, soil, and forest sort of notes here, but it is a bit too jammy at the moment. I would suggest that you wait at least another couple of years.

The cork was soaked all the way, but the wine was in great condition. Boasting of its very golden color in the glass, beautifully textured waves of tangerine, peach, chalk, honey, beeswax, and petrol caress the palate. Balance is impeccable, acidity is round, and finish is lengthy. A little cucumber component is sensed as well, but that may be an hallucination due to the wine's freshness. 8% alc.

Dark cherries, blackberries, eucalyptus, forest floor, lavender, and black pepper components are melded together in a harmonious way. It is a big tannic wine, as expected from Sagrantino based reds of this region.
I sense a touch of modern style here though. While this is a tannic beast and certainly old world, it isn’t completely rustic or bone dry. It’s got a bit of upfront style fruit that sits on top of the massive tannic structure, which allows the wine to appeal to a wider audience.

Very obviously new world with heavy oak treatment, strawberry cream puff, pink cotton candy, cassis jam, and salted caramel make up this rich Californian blend. Creaminess from the oak can be almost offensive for some people, however it does what it’s set out to do quite well. Personally, it is about 89 points, but objectively it may be 91 points.

2013 Wyatt Pinot Noir

9/6/2015 - Number51 wrote: 87 points

Ripe cherries, cola, gentle spices, and kirsch notes are pleasant. For my taste, cola flavor is overwhelming and there isn’t enough acidity, yet it’s got some good clean fruit. Even after hours of aeration, the wine didn’t fall apart. Given that some shops sell this at $12, it is a very good value for a Pinot Noir. Wyatt again proves that it is a reliable brand, both for Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are the two varieties that I have tried for several vintages. 87+ points.
