2016 Chateauneuf du Pape 99/100 point wine taste-off (and a couple of pirate Rhone wines): One of the CdPs of the night, the Beaucastel Jacques displays instant purity and depth from the first sip. Beautiful and stately and also dark and brooding, there is an elegance-meets-athleticism here that is undeniably captivating. For me, THIS is CdP in a glass. Rich and harmonious, with charming terroir-accented garrigue, leather, and stem notes to compliment and counterbalance the dark berry flavors undulating from the glass. This is so concentrated; never heavy. Unsmoked tobacco notes appear toward the tail, creating lift and adding to the deeply pitched core. It is all right there and it is all right now.

As it warmed up in the glass, the back end flattened a bit. Nothing major, but best advice is to keep service on the cooler side when drinking young. And speaking of drinking young, this awesome sprinter became fairly astringent after being open 24 hours. The mid-palate fell apart and became bitter, making for a seemingly over-aged delivery on the second day. This seems designed as less a marathoner and more for the immediate term (I know there are loyalists that call earlier consumption of prized CdPs crazy since some folks think these wines can and should age for 40 years. My 2 cents there? I’ll simply say, “Good luck with that”). Sure, there’s some baby fat to shed, but I wouldn’t be holding many of these modern CdPs past the 8-10 year mark – for those who value freshness at least.

But hey, on the first day, this was absolutely rocking. 98 points on day one. One of the lessons to be taken away from this tasting generally is that these 99/100-pointers are stylized and flashy. I’m not mad at them for it (quite the contrary) but know what you’re getting into. If you’re more on the dirt-worshiper side of Chateauneuf profile-wise, these 2016 big boys may be too much of a good thing all at once. Luckily this Beaucastel carries some identifiable clues that carry the taster to Rhone, rather than to Australia in the dead of summer, for example.

A private tasting (Aventura Wines, Amsterdam, NL): I am not obsessed with perfection in wine, but this really has an air of perfection about it. Everything is right about this wine, everything is in the right place, intense and elegant, pure and precise, effortless ease, glorious fruit, super-refined tannins, marvellous length. So beautifully constructed, like a perfectly cut diamond or a Mozart symphony. Striking finesse. Delicious now, great future.

Extremely dark ruby in color, the wine is incredibly refined. It offers a combination of power, richness, depth, intensity and freshness. The wine is palate staining, mouth filling, spicy and fresh. There are no hard edges here. As the wine rests in the glass, you find animalistic scents paired with black and blue fruits, 5 spice, flowers and a cornucopia of herbs in the nose. There is a richness that is impossible to ignore, but the lift and vibrancy in the fruit keep everything going. The finish hangs in there for more than 60 seconds. This is the best vintage of Hommage Perrin ever produced and that is really saying something! If you have the money, and can find a few bottles, this is a future legend that will be talked about for decades! The wine was made from a blend of 85% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah, 5% Grenache and 5% Counoise. As the vines continue aging, there will probably more Mourvedre in the blend in future vintages.

A candidate for the Chateauneuf du Pape Hall of Fame, this wine is off the charts! Rich, long, concentrated, powerful, and refined, with a vibrancy and energy to the wealth of fruit that provides the perfect backdrop for this gem. There is an incredible mouthfeel that coats your palate with layers of spicy fruit, leaving with suggestions of cherries, peppery spices, walnuts, black tea, green olives, and kirsch that hold on for at least 60 seconds! This is just entering its prime-time drinking window. Drink from 2022-2045.

The wine of the vintage. Compelling in every sense of the word, the wine is incredibly dark in color. The aromatics kick off with an amazing display of spices, herbs, wet earth, leaf, pepper, grilled meat, black raspberry, kirsch and plum notes. The weight, density and intensity on the palate coats your taste receptors, yet retains its lush, silky texture. The seamless finish leaves the 60 second mark in its wake. This should age for decades.

Spectacular. drank with a friend following a splash decant. Fully mature with no sediment, this has a nose fantasies are made of: plum, raspberry, cherry and spice. Long long lingering finish.
10-20 years of brilliant drinking still ahead.

Drank this beauty (60% Mourvedre) from the magnum and along side by side with Mas de Boislauzon cuvee Tintot with 85% Mourvedre (see separate notes) and Andremily Mourvedre (~70-80% mourvedre see separate notes). All three wines (rated 99-100) are the best of the best mourvedre out there. Now I can understand why this wine had been one of Robert Parker's favorite wines and why it's a benchmark for others to beat or study. This is a rare wine that may well worth spending $ on unlike many other similar or more expensive wines (such as Screaming Eagle or Masseto).

Jacques Perrin (JP) is the most ready to enjoy right out of the gate without much decanting or aeration! This is a truly elixir with great suppleness and purity of dark and rich fruit flavor profile without feeling heavy even though it has great concentration and full body. The wine is in perfect balance with incredible plush, velvety, seamless texture with great viscosity; and ultra fine tannin integrated perfectly with pure concentration of flavor. The sweet provencal herbal notes and ripe dark fruits aroma is perfumey and elegant without over-powering. It has great lingering finish and begging for a few more gulps!

The only and best word to describe this wine is FINESSE! It's one of those rare wines where the perfect balance between rich concentration and elegant structure; and the intoxicating aromatics with purity of flavor. Bravo! Hat off!

The only thing I am not sure of is how well it will age and hold its peak for how many years, given this is the first vintage I have ever drank (will know more next year when the 2016 vintage order arrive). However, I think 2019 Mas de Boislauzon cuvee le Tintot could give JP a run for its money in 10-15 years from now (tasted vertical line up of Tintot from 2006 to 2019 and those 2006-10 are still in peak form with primary fruit profile which reminded me of Ridge Monte Bello with the characteristics of tremendous age-ability and holding its primary fruit notes; and I will post those notes later on). Some wine critics have likened Andremily Mourvedre to JP probably for its supple texture and some aspect of its flavor (from some vintages); but Andremily style is more in your face and "heavier" relatively speaking (but not heavy compared to many other wines, including cut Napa cabs)

Decanted for about an hour. Served in Zaalto Burgundy glasses.
A class act and among the best wines we have ever tried. We can stop the TN here :).
The nose is of a cote rotie, we would have guessed this is a late 80s La La. Smoky, roast meat, dark fruits and light spice. Very elegant and complex nose and we kept on going back and back. On the palate it continues at the same tune and the wine sings, effortless, graceful and in perfect balance and harmony. Really its still on the way up and we see this as a 100 in a few years. But its almost perfect now. 98+

It is hard to find a better Chateauneuf from this legendary vintage, and that is saying a lot. This is mind-blowing in every sense of the word. Powerful, intense, long, seamless and complex, the wine coats your palate with countless layers of perfectly ripe, opulent, spicy, rich, luscious fruits. The finish crosses the 60-second mark without skipping a beat. This is still quite primal. But even at this youthful stage, it is impossible not to be mesmerized by what's in your glass. If I had to guess, it might take another 20-25 years of age before it's fully mature and it could provide incredible pleasure for another 2 decades after that. This is greatness in wine.

Honestly, I cannot begin to tell you how good this wine is. Stunning, spell binding, off the charts, etc, all those phrases add up to the same thing, right?

I'm not much for out long decanting, but 3-4 hours helped bring out the aromatics as well as allow the wine to flesh and fill out, which is where it really shines. Thick, rich, intense, fresh, full bodied, powerful, elegant and balanced, the texture is pure, mouth coating velvet. This is one of the greatest bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape ever produced!

This is a monster of a wine in all the right ways. Powerful, full bodied, dense and intense, the spicy, barbecue, garrigue, peppery, dark, red fruit filled nose really gets your attention. With mouth filling levels of extract and raw power, the wine coats your gums, palate and teeth with the essence of Mourvedre and Grenache. Another 5 to 10 years will add even more this immortal wine.

Meiningers Finest 100: International Wine Summit (Saalbau, Neustadt an der Weinstraße): My first Hommage from Beaucastel that I had the chance to taste. A much more elegant wine than I’ve thought it would be. The nose is infused with red cherry flavours mixed with garrigue, noble leather and a hint of cinnamon. The palate is ultra elegant with a velvet mouthfeel, wonderful integrated tannins and a strong acidity. This bad boy is still very young and can age for decades. I also tasted the “normal” 2014 (fruity, way too young) and the 2007 (already very nice to drink) but this really hits the spot for me. Of course the price point is crazy but don’t hesitate if you have the chance to try this beauty.

Stunning in every sense of the word, this beauty is almost off the charts! The herbs, thyme, smoke, forest smells, spice and ripe, peppery black and red fruits that create the nose, can keep you busy for ages. But it is the intensity, length, purity of fruit, freshness and density that keep you coming back for more. I am sure this can age for decades.

All the world's great wines share one commonality, it takes no time to recognize it's a rockstar. One sniff and sip of this stunner, and I knew this was an insane bottle. With its incredible depth of flavor, concentration, and complexity, the spicy, mouthcoating fruit, with its meaty personality made you take a second sip and sniff. Rich, palate-staining and yet light on its feet, the wine holds on your palate for over 60 seconds as it builds in intensity. With 60 minutes of air, the bottle kept getting better for the next few hours. It might have gone on longer, but we finished the bottle by that point. This is better than the 1989 or 1990, and it sells for a lot less money.

Alternating between wild, animalistic and regal, this is one of the great wine tasting experiences of my life. Fresh, lively and spicy, the fruit coats your palate with the essence of blackberry and kirsch liqueur. Intense, but perfectly in balance, the wine feels like, thick velvet, with a wild edge, giving you a blend of elegance and sauvage sensations. This is a true legend of Chateaunaeuf du Pape.

A Matter of Taste: London Edition (Saatchi Gallery, Chelsea): The real deal! Hauntingly pure in appearance, both deep and transparent at the same time; an acrid barnyard nose with wool, tin and pepper emerging; balanced, powerful palate, so complex, with deep, rich dark fruit that virtually exploded in the mouth alongside notes of candied flowers, smoked meat and licorice; an endless finish; my red WOTF, and perhaps of the day.

Incredibly concentrated, almost dense, yet, even with all the weight, heft and power, everything here is perfectly balanced, which lets you focus on all the meaty, dark, red fruits, peppery spice, grilled beef, flowers, smoked cherries and plums. This palate staining gem delivers a solid 60 second finish that build and expands. This is not a wine for consumers without patience as you should wait at least 12-15 years before thinking about pulling a cork. But based on tasting numerous previous vintages, this is going to be worth the wait. Drink from 2030 - 2050

Wow, this is insane from start to finish! The nose blasts you in the face with its ripe black raspberry, black cherry, smoke, herb, spice and black pepper personality. Thick, dense and intense, everything is in the right place keeping the wine in balance. Tannic, structured and meaty, the finish paints the fruit all over the place. This is far too young, but I am happy a friend brought this stunner over during the holidays. This is old vine Mourvedre at its best.

Slight discolouration towards the rim, but still very dark in the centre. Stunning nose, ultra-complex, herbs, fine red and black fruit, berries and cherries, smoky, bacon fat, lavender - wow... On the palate so incredibly harmonic, elegant, with great acidity, spices, fine fruit, a slight saline touch, very sweet and round tannins, almost perfect balance with a little bit of warmth coming through. Enormously long and persistent! Too young now, but already quite approachable, this will be even better in a couple (or more) years time. I hope I will have a chance to taste this unbelievable wine again! 97-100.

Hommage a DryCab - Washington Wines release; 5/3/2018-5/5/2018 (Various spots in Walla Walla): This wine needs just a lot more time to really be what it should be. We decanted for prob 4 hours and that was prob a good start. Perhaps of all of the wines this night it was the one that evolved most in the glass. In the beginning it was just young and tight and not quite ready. After a few hours sitting out it was black fruits and spice and herbs and again that structure that makes me appreciate this wine so much. Tasty, but will hold on the other bottles.

Château de Beaucastel Dinner & Tasting at Jeroboams, Walton Street. Limited notes.
Gross infanticide: virtually shut for business (just a whiff of mint) on the nose. A massive hit of almost syrupy blackberry/dark hedge fruits the overwhelming element on the palate with merely a hint of the spice and rustic herbs etc lurking in the background. A truly great wine - but very much in the making at present. Bought 3.
Hold till at least 2025 - I'm 64 and this will probably outlive me! 95+ potential.

Hommage à Jacques Perrin Vertical (Arvino, Zurich): Unfortunately, only slow-oxed for three hours. This wine was completely closed down, hollow mid palate, low complexity, low aromatic density, short and rather simple. Even after two hours in the glass and a lot of swirling nothing. One could sense the ripeness here but difficult to judge if too ripe and roasted or not. Structure seems good with good ripe tannins and a good acidic backbone. My reaction to this highly acclaimed wine from the highly acclaimed vintage: sell my bottles tomorrow. But after talking to Matthieu Perrin on my way out he said that that would be the wrong decision. I have to believe him as he said that despite the unpredictability of the development of a wine he was “200% certain” that the wine will come back and become much better with some more years in the cellar. No rating today.

Decant: If you open a bottle today give it at least 6 hours in the decanter, probably even more time is needed.
