96 technical points, 110 points for the experience. A friend brought the wine to a blind tasting of island wines. We all judged the wine to be about 100 years younger - and were 100 years wrong. The nose and palate showed similar, very complex aromas of dried dates, figs, black olives, raisins, hazelnut, mocha, autumn soil with damp leaves and mushrooms. The taste changed continuously and showed constantly changing, complex flavours - fantastic. The wine had incredible complexity, good length and medium body. The pairing with Roquefort cheese was one of the most impressive taste experiences I had.

By the glass. Tropical fruit maceration on the nose with aromas of passion fruit, lychees, sour cherries, unripe kiwi or cherimoya pulp. Overwhelming and saturating. On the palate it is offered as a dense and abundant wine, without any elegance. Moderately tasty with a sharp finish. It's not my style.

Tasted blind. Mature nose of underwood, red berries, leather, and a hint of smoke. Tannins are fully resolved with old leather, blood, some fruit, and medium acidity. Good finish. This is clearly fully mature, but a pleasure to drink and a treat to taste such a unique and rare bottle.

At 1st opening, beautiful evolved nose & palate, light, but lots of life. So pretty & elegant! In today's climate, are we still permitted to call a wine "feminine?" Surprisingly, after about 30 minutes of air, even more fruit started to open up. Light dried cherries & plums. Maybe a hint of pomegranate, but that may have been the pomegranate sauce on the duck exerting an influence. The wine danced on the palate, & lingered on the tongue. Purchased from a private cellar. Recorked in 1991 by a 3rd-party company (prior to my purchase). Solid 95 points. Not a drop remained in the decanter.

3 cm and cork in good condition. Glass breathed for 5 mins and consumed within 30 mins. Color clear and relatively youthful for its age. Tea leaf and plum. Amazed the quality despite 1'er and age; it's likely mixed with some grand cru at the time.

bottle was weathered, fill excellent and the cork was soaked, but extracted intact. Brilliant red light red with excellent clarity, the wine was decanted. Well, there are great bottles and this one delivered. Beautiful, autumnal scents - leaves, sous bois, cigar box and more. Nuanced, restrained, endlessly unfolding and in complete control - Sublime with a seared steak, winter squash and beets. Je suis amoureuses

A stunning surprise. Averys own label of excess production, stored in Bristol since purchase. Not sure which vineyard this came from but given the quality of the wine it could easily have been Vosne. Deep colour, brilliantly inviting nose of ripe fleshy Pinot and a really full palate (no Grenache here!) Engel used to be a source for Remoissenet from whom Averys purchased most of their own label stocks a this time. This was a great bottle. (I have subsequently learned that this cuvee was de-classified Mazis Chambertin)

1976 Avery Red Burgundy Lunch (Cucinetta): French bottled (Remoissenet) and likely to be from Le Chambertin Grand Cru. The densest red garnet colour of the three. Slightly over ripe smokey pinot aromatics with some prune notes from the heat of the vintage. Very "Old School" in style. The palate is all power and weight, with plenty of fine mouth coating tannin and a long meaty and salty finish. Improved with air for over two hours. The most powerful of the three. Wish I had decanted this one.

1976 Avery Red Burgundy Lunch (Cucinetta): French bottled (Remoissenet) and likely to be from Gevery Chambertin Les Combottes 1er Cru. Dense red garnet in colour. Ripe pinot aromatics with some mint, meat spice and smoke. It shows the heat of the vintage but remains fresh with cool fruit aromatics. Gorgeous palate with plenty of fine mouth coating tannin. The most perfumed of the three. Improved with air for over two hours and the last drop was the best.

1976 Avery Red Burgundy Lunch (Cucinetta): English bottled and likely to be from Corton due to the "Diamond Jubilee" reference. Dense red garnet in colour. Strangely sweet nose suggests the barrel was "improved" and maybe not by the addition of Syrah, as this shows port like black currant notes. Lacks pinot aromatics. Dense palate with earth and tar, high alcohol and the warm finish of the vintage. The least Burgundian of the three. Needed protein.

Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - The Worst Wine Dinner of my life (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): Despite from a half bottle, this is surprisingly fresh and precise. Still showing good freshness, generous yellow fruit, fascinating orange juice, candied orange rind, peach, apricot, crème brulee and sweet spices. Fully integrated palate, generous ripe orchard fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity that keeps the freshness and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish. Surprisingly fresh and really enjoyable.

Damp but solid cork. Decanted.
Deeply coloured, some lightnesss at the rim.
Rich and ripe dark berries with a strong whole bunch spice and fine oak fragrance. Fruits are plummy.
Solid weight, rich and tasty, has developed but fruit still dominant. Coarse for what it is, but still a great wine for its age. Feels like it could last another 20yrs. Flavours are ripe dark cherries, some sour cherry stones, quite plummy and with a little prune. Nice balance and acidity, finishes long and clean and still with some fine tannins. Drinking beautifully.

Decanted off the sediment carefully. Color is still an intense ox blood/garnet red turning a very slight orangey brown at the rim. The nose and palate were intensely complex and ever evolving over the course of the night demanding their full attention. Upfront soft and soothing red berries both sweet and tart, orange peel, and passionfruit are cradled by damp, cool alpine forest floor, lightly herbal menthol, summer fields of lilac, jasmine, violets and lavender and a dashingly handsome streak of mineralité reminiscent of crushed and powdered granite. As the wine unfolds tertiary notes of decay arise showing cigar box, heavily worn leather, button mushrooms and a spice box like walking through the finest middle eastern bazaar. The midpalate is lush, lithe, ethereal and laser focused all at once. The tannins are completely resolved like those of day-old tea and are incredibly refined. The acidity is gentle, appetite whetting and gives grace to this through focusing the fruits while balancing them with the herbal and earth notes. The finish may yet be the best part of this wine as it goes on for what seems like several minutes and evolved from crisp cranberries to tart cherries which then faded into cinnamon, allspice, clove, nutmeg, star anise and then into an immensely satisfying mineralité. I wasn't sure what to expect from this bottle upon opening but it quickly turned into my top two wine experiences of my life. Bravo!

Third rendition of Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - Root day and '14 DRCs to the rescue! (Mirabelle restaurant, Washington D.C.): Expressive and youthful nose displaying decadent red fruits, strawberry jam, cherry liqueur, licorice, cedar, sous bois, ash, raw button mushroom and earth. Excellent concentration, round and dense sweet red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and a medium to long sweet red fruit and mineral driven finish. Although not terribly complex, the concentrated sweet red fruit makes the wine very pleasurable. One of the best purchases from the Avery auction.

Third rendition of Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - Root day and '14 DRCs to the rescue! (Mirabelle restaurant, Washington D.C.): The color of Vin Jaune and the flavor to match. Oxidized apple, burn sugar, roasted chestnut, white flowers, cigarette ash and mineral. Excellent concentration, deeply toned, madeira, piecing acidity, good mineral presence and a long vin jaune like finish. It will be fascinating to serve with a bresse chicken with morel, cream and vin jaune dish or simply with aged comte. Also perhaps slow Adouze for 24 hours or longer.
