2016 Canneto Vino Nobile di MontepulcianoSangiovese more |
4/25/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: NRFully blossoming now, this is just another gorgeous 2016 from Tuscany. Drinks more like a $60 Bruneli than a $20 Vino Nobile. I love the thought of this with some nice dry rub pork ribs. |

4/23/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: NRNotes at the pop: crowd-pleasing sweetness and malo-ferm texture riding on a sizeable wave of alcohol. Still big and firm tannins. Going to leave this open overnight and update tomorrow. |

2020 Tercero Pinot Noir Pommard 4 Kessler-Haak VineyardSta. Rita Hills more |
4/21/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: NROn the heels of the Clone 115, this seems much more ready to go and willing to deliver. The mouthfeel is smoother and there's just more going on in the bouquet. Though, it also seems like time will be of benefit for this as well. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2020 Tercero Pinot Noir Clone 115 Kessler-Haak VineyardSta. Rita Hills more |
4/20/2024 - fingers wrote: NRNo experience with this vineyard, clone, or vintage, but this left me a little underwhelmed compared to this producer's Rhone lineup. To me, it comes across as a generic Central Coast PN with a heavy influence from the alcohol (even though it's only 13.5%) hovering over the underlying varietal character. No way that I'm saying it isn't a well-made wine, it just isn't a style I favor. Happy to be proven wrong if my remaining bottle ages into something more to my liking. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

4/20/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 87 pointsThis bottle was in a much better state than my first one. Nicely balanced acidity-to-fruit flavors and the mouthfeel seems to have gained a little weight over the past year. 5+9+16+7= 87 |

4/20/2024 - fingers wrote: 87 points7/23 disgorgement. Light yellow-gold color with a persistent column of bubbles. Light to medium intensity nose of lemon stainless steel cleaner and a little autolysis. No questioning the extra brut designation, this is quite dry and helped tremendously by the accompaniment of some grub. Never going go be a blockbuster, but I bet this has a long road ahead to cruise on. I see it being richer and rounder in a couple years. 4+10+15+8= 87 |

4/17/2024 - fingers wrote: 88 pointsMedium gold color with a nice steady stream of bubbles. Medium intensity nose and a weighty palate (the SO mentioned oily) that has some cinnamon applesauce and honeydew melon flavors, though it is still firmly dry and brisk. Certainly different from genuine Champagne, it reminds me more of Chenin Blanc or a very good Prosecco. |

4/15/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 89 pointsPeachy pink color with a fine, thin fizz. Bouquet and flavors of strawberry, melon, raspberry. I think the acidity and residual sugar are in very nice proportion to each other, and it makes this very easy to just relax and enjoy with just about any food you could imagine. I wish that I bought more of this. 4+9+18+8= 89 |

4/14/2024 - fingers wrote: NRReally needs a long aeration (4+ hrs) to open up. it eventually turns into a balanced and enjoyable drink with proper varietal character but not much else to say at this point. I will be holding my remaining 2 for at least a couple years before revisiting. |

4/13/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsGood to go on pop and pour. Just as excellent as it was a year and a half ago. Color is turning more crimson and the smooth-as-silk mouthfeel delivers a complex arrangement of currants, cupcakes, strawberry sherbet, mocha, and dirty little earth secrets. I don't know... it's just really, really good. Certainly New World in regard to the grapes actually being ripe ;) - so yes, there is a bit of warmth in the picture, too. 14.4%. |

4/13/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsLight gold color with a vibrant and persistent fizz. Medium intensity nose of warm bread and hazelnuts. Very crisp and "puckery" in the mouth with abundant acidity, along with texture and flavors like creamy citrus foam and orangecicle. Delicious, even if it does take the enamel off your teeth. 5+11+17+9= 92 |

4/13/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 89 pointsNotes from memory on a bottle that I followed for three days open. I usually don't review unless there's a glass in front of me, but in this case the wine made enough of an impression that I need to record it for future reference. Light to medium ruby color, no haze or sediment. Average intensity nose of soil and stone with a little white flower bouquet. Palate is really crunchy and crisp, almost no fruit to speak of. This is probably the most AFWE wine I've ever had... and I like it a lot. Spending time within its subtlety reveals plenty of character from a nice palette of flavors. I think I will always want some of this style in my cellar for times when I don't feel like a deep or bombastic wine. Label says 13% - hard to believe it's really over 11% |

2017 Tercero CarignaneSanta Barbara County more |
4/9/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsClear and bright ruby color, about 60% opaque with a speck of sediment at the bottom. Profound, muscular bouquet of dark toast and ripe berry salad along with kefta spices. The palate brightens up some, adding more red berry and plum. This has Larry's signature showing in regards to the balance and texture of this wonderful interpretation. Carignane, I usually find to be lacking something and gives me the feeling like Granache or Syrah needs to be blended in. But this is just fine on its own, and I think it will get even more interesting as time goes on. 5+12+17+8= 92 |

2020 Comstock Blanc de BlancDry Creek Valley Chardonnay more |
4/5/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 89 pointsNo dosage or disgorgement info. Pale gold color with a broad and steady fizz. Very mild intensity nose that's hard to discern anything but a little citrus cream and ginger. Bone dry with nice flavor and purity that strikes me as a perfect match for oysters (which I, sadly, did not have). Crystalline and fairly long finish with no noticeable flaws. I would not be surprised if this has more to offer with a few years in the cellar. 5+9+17+8= 89 |

2021 Tercero Mourvèdre RoséSanta Barbara County more |
4/4/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: NRThis bottle was fully back on point since it wasn't stored in a freon-leaking wine fridge. Drank this over 4 days open and solid to the finish. I do have to think of it more like a full-bodied white because it reminds me so much of a nice Gewurz or Rhone blanc and I think it pairs with food the same way. Too serious to be just a summertime porch pounder. |

4/2/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsMedium ruby color with a light garnet tint, no sediment. Bouquet was soft and muted for only about 30 minutes before gaining momentum. Light intensity on the nose but the palate has weight and persistence with crunchy red fruits and a little mushroom and earth. Very pretty, indeed. 5+10+18+9= 92 |

3/31/2024 - fingers wrote: NROver 2 nights open. Dark ruby color, no sediment. Light to medium intensity nose that has a top coat of alcohol with underlays of blueberries, tobacco, and light florals. Palate, likewise, is a bit muted and the tannins are still somewhat firm. Early on, my sense was more PV, but as it aired out it seemed to show more Merlot. I feel like this could use several more years before it really finds its groove. |

3/30/2024 - fingers wrote: 88 pointsFollowed over five nights open. Still rather awkward and clunky as far as the mouthfeel and alcohol, but the flavor elements are there to make a nice drop if aging can work a little magic. I might try another in a year or so. 5+11+14+8= 88 |

2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage No. 5Willamette Valley more |
3/25/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 94 pointsMy first whiff and taste of a Goodfellow PN. The bouquet at the pop triggered an immediate childhood memory of when my Dad would take me to the burger place down the street (Connals in Pasadena, if you're wondering) and we would get Boston shakes. Strawberry shake, ice cream, whipped cream, nuts, chocolate sprinkles, and a cherry on top. I get the same profile and satisfaction out of this, 50+ years on :) |

3/24/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: NRServed in a Grassl Liberte stem from a bottle opened yesterday. 90% opaque purple color with a clear rim and very slow, lightly stained legs. Powerful nose of flowers, red berries, licorice, and mint. Very fresh and vibrant for a fortified wine with the mint note becoming even more prominent on the palate. Compared to my note from 2017, I would say that the tannins have integrated into a nice harmony and now the wait is just for the extra complexity and texture that comes with age. Right now, it still drinks as much like an Aussie Shiraz as it does a Port, which also makes it fine with a burger or steak ;) |

3/23/2024 - fingers Likes this wine: 95 pointsNotes after following for six hours open. Very dark ruby color, about 80% saturated, no haze or sediment. Profound bouquet of luscious and ripe dark berries and spice. Velvet mouthfeel, with an abundance of sweet ripe fruit and earthy elements that benefit from enough acidity to make it swishilicious. The tannins are still a bit confident, but I think this is just about ready for prime time and is an amazing drop already. The nose is truly special. |

3/19/2024 - fingers wrote: NRNotes on pop n pour. Very dark purple, 95% opaque with very slow, clear legs. No sediment. The earlier notes of menthol/mint/eucalyptus in the bouquet are still quite present, along with a bit of tea tree oil. However, on the palate, the fruit shows up and fleshes out nicely with bright acidity and light tannins. Definitely not glou-glou as far as Aussie reds go. This has structure and the balance to run long. Might not be a profile that everyone enjoys, but I look forward to my remaining 5 with great interest. |
