Not much change since my last note, a touch less acidity than I remember from last time
Colour is a palest lemon , bright and clear 15/15
Nose : intense white peach, white flowers , rose petals, talc, lemon, citrus, green apple, fantastic purity and complexity 28/30
Palate full flavoured , soft and fruity, citrus, pure, silky, bone dry but a sweetness from the fruit but also a fair bite from the acidity ,amazing super long finish 41/44
Overall , so drinkable now and so much promise for the future , perfectly balanced with amazing purity 11/11

Rieslingfest 2024 (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): From half bottle. Pretty, ripe apple, cream, a little apricot, sweet, juicy acid, more obviously botrytised on the palate, a little too sweet and rich for the acid levels.

Savoury and herbal, framed with soft silky tannins. Excellent integration. Seems a little closed (we decanted for 1.5hrs). Extreme balance and length, will likely be excellent with further age.

New Zealand Trip; 2/10/2024-2/24/2024: We tasted this next to the 2019. Its color was clearly light, limpid, and less saturated in comparison. Whereas aromatically the younger wine led with its succulent red fruit, this shouted terroir and mint as soon as it was opened. Lighter weight but it gained some sappiness with air. Here, as the fruit unfolded, it was more blue than red and accompanied by cinnamon and chocolate tones. Excellent acidity and refined, barely noticeable tannins. This did not feel quite as seamless as the 2019, but was an immensely impressive, achingly delicate wine that is a far cry from most New Zealand Pinot Noir. Both of these were revelatory.

New Zealand Trip; 2/10/2024-2/24/2024: I had never heard of these wines until we were exhorted to try one tonight. This bottle was so extraordinary that we couldn’t help but order the earlier vintage that was also on the list. The 2019 had a regal ruby tint with breathtaking aromatics of fragrant ripe strawberry, tilled earth, and penetrating high toned menthol. With air the fruit became darker red, and the green tones settled into a lightly stemmy profile. What was most striking was the mouth feel and harmony of the wine, a silky, fluid dance of pure fruit and soil across the palate with tangy acidity and perfectly refined tannins backing it up. This showed more of its structure as it sat out, but its beauty never faded. Its elegance and slightly tart red fruit made me think of great Chambolle-Musigny. Gorgeous vin de terroir that was probably the best wine we had during our 2 weeks in New Zealand and this on our final evening here. Brilliant and a wine that Burghound would probably describe as “Zen-like”.

Lime nose with vegetable notes, apples and peaches, a touch tropical with diesel highlights. The palate is savory lemon/lime riding on precise high acidity.

A Syrah night in Kampai (Auckland CBD): perfumed, dark berries and spices, bright fresh acidity, some meaty and savoury notes. smooth texture. fine grained tannins, m+ body, m++ finish. clean and pure fruity, combined with fragrant and some savoury complicity. a typical and well polished cool climate Syrah.

all good except a little lean, I still don't get it how it becomes a cult and such a high price (about NZ$200 or even more as you can only find it in auction now).

Ap 5/5, Ar 13/15, Palate 17/20, Overall 5+3/10
Total 93+/100

Terroir-istes International - New Zealand Assorted (Groot Constantia): (Tasted Blind): Matured 21 months in 23% new French oak, with 92% of the grapes being destemmed. Deep crimson to purple colour; the nose is shy and rather reductive to start with diesel oil that opens to incense, black pepper and lavender balm. A rich entry with good concentration there is plenty of black fruits, medium acid and sinewy yet pliant tannins. Fairly smooth in the mid-palate the wine feels slightly one-dimensional almost winemaking by numbers. The wine has a good length, a little complexity and medium finish, finishing dry but not that compelling.

Opened at Mosu HK. Slow-oxed for a few hours before being served blind.

Whilst trying to figure out what this was, I was not convinced it was Burgundy but also couldn't quite put my finger on what it was, so settled for 2017 VR Village from a top producer. This was clean, had a lovely fresh bouquet of red fruits (hence guessing 2017 Burg) without being explosive, wasn't too heavily extracted and had a good balance. Not huge structure hence my guess of village, with a very pleasant aftertaste of blue fruits. However no Vosne spice, or smoky/meatiness that you might associate with other villages.

Was pleasantly surprised when the Kusuda was revealed, as this is my first experience with this wine. Very pleasant to drink, but unsure about the QPR given its slightly cultish status.

Probably in a good spot right now too - unlikely to get much better in my opinion, so wouldn't hesitate to drink up, even though it will stay at this level for a while. Would be happy to drink again if shared, but unsure if I would seek it out myself. Probably a 91+, but doesn't quite make 92 for me.

Slight bricking, otherwise mid-light ruby transparency in glass. Nose is still classic vibrant Kusuda - lifted elegant leafy notes, alongside forest floor and mushrooms and juicy young leather. Twist of wood spices, and the inevitable bloom with time. Fresh acidity, expressive mouthful of flavours, balanced berries, fresh black earth, hint cocoa, with roses and dark florals. Supple velvety texture, easy and effortless. Certainly some development and tertiaries, complex yet accessible at the same time. Long finish of berries, drinking really nicely at this point. Magic!

Light and fine boned, even by Kusuda standards, some bricking but still bright with lovely clarity, benefits from a bit of air before serving, red cherry and red currant fruit is still there, dried rose petals and saffron, cardamom, it’s a really evocative nose. The palate is silky smooth and really fresh, maybe the fruit is starting to lose against the acidity now ?it doesn’t stop it being really delicious and far too easy to drink. A beautiful wine.

Very pretty and elegant made with a very light hand, it has a lifted hearby note which made me think (before i looked it up on Kusuda's website) there were a lot more stems in the maceration than the 6% noted on the website. How wrong I was! The wine is still very youthful and feels like it has just come our of it's cocoon. I have no doubts it will continue improving for the next 8/10 years.

Brief note. A bottle drunk at home over three evenings, during which it barely changed. Under cork, a sound bottle. I was a little underwhelmed compared with last year's bottle. Stalky herbs, including some cut, green herbs, damp earth and sous bois, more red than black fruit, bramble and minerals. Persistent, Kusuda-signature driven acidity but overall very Martinborough Terraces. Savoury and gravelly, not at all sweet-fruited. Below mid weight with fine but firm tannins. Drink now or by say 2030.

PNP into Grassl 1855 glass (“Fruit” day): Medium bright purplish ruby with a garnet rim.

Signature high-class dried floral and potpurri notes that is signature of this style - black cherries and plummy notes that is aligned with the variety although one can easily take this on as Pinot too. Very well-integrated French oak notes here and immediately obvious of the quality on the nose.

Elegant attack on the palate with bright acidity. Seamless tannins here with a hint of sweet spice on the persistent finish.

This is an exceptional wine and to me 94 points easy. But this will reward many more years of cellarage say at 5-10 years.

1 hour 45 mins in, 2/3 left: more hints of reduction in a nice way, deep and great array of fruits. More tea leafy and complex herbal notes. Great wine indeed. 94-95 points.

garnet/ruby colour, elegant wine. Red cherries with floral notes, spice and some mild oak on the nose. Has more palate weight than some other Kusudas I have had, but still has the grace and elegance expected. Cherry with stalk, herbs and some minerality float on the tongue. Fine tannins. Still has lots of life.
