Like the Boswell, it continued to improve each hour, starting at a 93 and peaking at a 96. Solid Napa cab notes on the nose and palate. Great dense dark red/black Napa fruit on the palate. Just the slightest of color fading at the rim. The fruit is still quite strong hanging between primary and secondary. Sweet caramel notes emerge on the palate after a few hours. The wine overall is smooth and balanced and integrated. Hard to imagine it gets any better than this.....a really solid wine. |

4/15/2024 - MN Wine Junkie Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis wine is a transition wine between Heitz Bella Oaks and Bella Oaks Proprietary Red that uses Bella Oaks fruit. Very nice wine and at 10 years old it showing quite well. Still very much on the fruit forward side (mostly black fruit) of the spectrum, but some tertiary flavors developing, including cocoa, anise, earth, and tobacco, with some toasted oak. This is tasty right now, but I believe will get even better with another 10 years of age or a super-long decant. Probably best at ages 25-35, where I suspect a nice balance between fruit and tertiary flavors. 94 to 94+ today, but may pick up a couple more points with additional age. |

4/15/2024 - sfwinelover1 Likes this wine: 93 pointsGenerously poured for us by Martin for a compare/contrast with how another fairly esteemed (even if they’re not my favorite) and relatively comparatively priced producer used BO grapes, albeit from a not particularly proximate, although high quality, vintage. In this case, no contest. Yep, there’s plenty of vibrant fruit, forest floor and some spice here, but lots less structure and more oak and vanilla, which really distract. I do like this, but would struggle to be a buyer, even at about half the price. Subject to my comment about age difference, this is a powerful anti-terroirist argument. Drink now-next few years. |
