NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 163emeChampagne Blend more |
2/16/2024 - acyso wrote: 95 pointskɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): I shat on this wine hard when it came out (after all, it was released around the same time as the vaunted 164eme, which honestly hasn't turned out to be all that it was cracked up to be), but with the benefit of 7-8 years, this has really blossomed and become a bottle of Krug that is worthy of the florets label. Dense, mineral, and structural, but impeccably balanced between its acidity and concentration. Toasty, biscuity, and unmistakably Krug. Wow. |

1989 Penfolds GrangeSouth Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more |
9/28/2023 - acyso wrote: 98 pointsFour decades of Penfolds Grange (Chicago, IL): This drank very similarly to the fantastic 1990. The fruit isn't as intense and dark as the younger wine; it is more red-fruit and acid driven, but the potent aromatics and more importantly, the silky texture are both present. Perhaps a little less Parker-forward, and again this comes across more old-school elegant than the more rambunctious 1990. Both, however, were stunning examples of Grange.

2005 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des EpeneauxPinot Noir more |
4/25/2023 - acyso wrote: 93 pointsClos des Epeneaux survey, part II (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly, a decent 2005 (which honestly is few and far between, and I'll throw in my editorial comment that it is one seriously charmless vintage very much like 1986 Bordeaux). This is actually quite close in profile to the 2009, but the fruit is darker and feels more subdued. Almost a leathery tannic note here, with plenty of grainy tannin that still needs to be resolved. Probably the wine with the longest-lived potential tonight, and that's because there's enough fruit here.

3/20/2023 - acyso wrote: 93 pointsClos des Epeneaux survey (Chicago, IL): Initially, this was more stern and structured than the 2015 (which surprised everyone at the table). With air, the structure and density loosened up, and yielded a lovely, perfumed red fruit profile. Minerally, bright, and crisp, this doesn't have the fruit intensity of the 2015 (which I slightly preferred for its weight -- but I mean, I have a pretty Parkerized palate nowadays), and I don't think this will last as long as the 2015, but this is excellent now (with air or a decant) and should be for a good while.

2006 Dom Pérignon ChampagneChampagne Blend more |
6/14/2022 - acyso wrote: 88 pointsMini Dom Perignon study (Chicago, IL): Unequivocally the weakest performing of the lineup tonight. This is mature and somewhat amorphous, lacking the acid delineation that the other three vintages (including the 2012) had. The fruit is starting to brown, and there are some pronounced secondary notes here. There's still some acidity, but this is definitely limper than the older 2004. Nothing about this bottle appears to be in bad condition, and the known provenance doesn't make me wonder about storage. At least based on this showing, this just wasn't very good.

1/31/2022 - acyso wrote: 93 pointsJanuary Rhônes (Chicago, IL): From jeroboam. I don't know if this wine is still better in large format, but this was a fantastic edition of this wine (not sure which release it was). Bright apples, pears, and quince, with refreshing acidity too. Speaks very honestly of chardonnay.

NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Exquise SecChardonnay more |
9/26/2021 - acyso wrote: 90 pointsSunday hangout (Chicago, IL): Disgorged April 17, 2012. I've been of the mindset that I just like my Selosse fresher. This was a really weird wine. Definitely sweeter than the fresher bottles of this that I had maybe two years ago (with essentially the same crowd), but with more of a vinous, sappy, and almost slightly cloying quality (though there was certainly plenty of acidity here). No one really wanted a second pour of this, though apparently it went quite well with some Nashville hot. A final sip from the bottle maybe five hours later tasted more like Martinelli's than champagne. Go figure.

2009 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Les BarresPinot Meunier more |
12/21/2018 - acyso wrote: 95 pointsLes Barres vertical for 冬至 (Chicago, IL): In a word, awesome. I've really loved how all the grower 2009s have turned out. The riper vintage really gives lots of balance to a style that I think is generally too lean (Chartogne-Taillet is an exception to that though). There's tons of intensity to this wine -- lots of delicious sweet fruit that is nicely balanced by the acids. Great complexity, and with air, this actually picked up some really delicious autolytic biscuity notes. Fantastic champagne -- I'm so glad I went deep on this vintage.

2016 Weingut Keller Niersteiner Pettenthal Riesling KabinettRheinhessen more |
7/28/2018 - acyso wrote: 95 pointsMore wines with Salil (Chicago, IL): #20-17, 9% abv. The problem, so to speak, with this wine is that it's not exactly a standard riesling kabinett. The nose is more white Burgundy than it is riesling, with that flinty, Roulot-like matchstick aroma. Beside that, however, is an exotic mix of citrus peel, tart tropical fruit, lemongrass, and some other less distinctly identifiable green herbs. The palate certainly feels a lot more like riesling, with just a hint of sweetness. My initial impression from this was one of prädikat creep, but that was just misdirection caused by the sheer amount of fruit in this wine (in fact, the Keller wines are dryer than they seem, mostly because of all that sneaky fruit). Heaps of intense minerality and acidity with incredible laser-like focus. This is fantastic riesling, if slightly atypical.

NV René-Henri Coutier Champagne Grand Cru Brut RoséChampagne Blend more |
5/22/2018 - Nanda Likes this wine: 92 pointsA serious candidate for house Rosé here. Disgorged 10/16. 8 g/l dosage. 50/50 Pinot and Chard. Pretty strawberry short cake, floral and earth nose. Excellent stuffing with rich fruit and driving energy. Tasty and full of flavor, if a tad straight forward and obvious.

1/22/2018 - psmith wrote: 94 pointsI love this wine. It's very clean and mineral-driven, and this bottle has just a trace of darker, more orange liqueur tones. The mousse is still a bit aggressive, but it's young and full of energy. Stock up.

1/12/2018 - acyso wrote: 83 points2015 Bourgogne AC blind (Chicago, IL): Served single blind. You know that hip term "ghosting" that all the cool kids are saying these days? That's what this wine does. The nose and attack are promising enough, with a red fruit profile (though sweeter and candied in comparison to the Guillemot). But then the palate is just empty and hollow. There's just a wateriness here, followed by some alcoholic heat. The more young Fourrier I try, the less I like it.

10/27/2017 - acyso wrote: 90 pointsNebbiolos, white truffles, Volume II (Chicago, IL): 314052. Not the most convincing showing of the GC in this bottle. It's got the classic Krug profile, but it has a bit of white grape flavour that doesn't quite work too well. Not as rich and powerful as I would have expected it to be, either. A good showing, but not particularly convincing.

2013 Comm. G.B. Burlotto BaroloNebbiolo more |
10/20/2017 - psmith wrote: 90 pointsIt's young, but I already knew that and thought "well, at least I can replace this one if I decide to." What I wasn't expecting was a darker, riper fruit profile than I normally see in Burlotto. There's some floral and menthol undertones, and it manages to straddle more elegant and robust profiles pretty well, in a 'not allowed in an NC bathroom' sort of way. It's a lighter-medium bodied wine overall, but with firm grape tannins showing through on the finish. A nice wine.

10/11/2017 - acyso wrote: 95 pointsChicago 2004 Krug Release (Chicago, IL): 413063. I think it's quite weird to stick your nose in the glass, smell the mushrooms and earth of pinot alongside the characteristic broad-shouldered Krug signature. The palate was where this got interesting. I found the midpalate a bit softer and less powerful than the other wines tonight, but the finish was extremely persistent. In fact, that the wine just kept going on and on, despite the relatively lighter midpalate, was the most compelling thing about this.

NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 164emeChampagne Blend more |
9/22/2017 - acyso wrote: 93 points216016. The idea that the entry level wine of a champagne house should be consistent year-in year-out goes out the window once each individual release is numbered distinctly. In any case, this is a brilliant bottle of young Grande Cuvee (and I've had my fair share of them). Interestingly enough, this is not particularly bready or oxidative -- in fact, I would say this doesn't show particularly Kruggy. The white-hot acidity, while delicious, seems a bit out of place for Krug. Great stuffing and power, but as far as Krug signature is concerned, this might be in want of more time for that to express itself.
