2005 Gramona Cava Brut Nature III Lustros Gran Reserva

Macabeo-Xarello-Parellada Blend more

From 75cl, excellent natural-faced crown cork. Reliable provenance, perfectly cellared. The wine in my glass is a mediocre 8 EUR Cava masquerading as a 30 EUR/95PP star. Amazing how an inflated price tag and a fancy write-up can convince people that they are drinking something special. Don't believe the hype. Yeasty and rather impure smell of mature white wine from non-aromatic grapes; very ordinary cava taste (inexpressive juice, rather fierce, obtrusive bubbles). Reminiscent of commercial supermarket cava without the added sugar; winey finish. Avoid. 81P

5/3/2013 9:28:00 AM - I had this wine this year and it has pretty much nothing to do with your description.

I find a little bit imprudent to label a wine you seem to have tried once as "mediocre", "ordinary" and advice to "avoid" it. Probably you have not familiar with Xarel·lo cavas, which by the way its a quite aromatic grape but it's more known for its structure and body. It is true Gramona has a more mature profile, but that doesn't make it "cheap" or vulgar as it seems you think. Actually, a sparkling wine that rests 5 years on its lees can't certainly be very cheap and while in Spain it has a bit lower price tag (€25), it's a much better sparkler than many house champagnes. I wonder what would you say if you try Celler Batlle.

A better advice would be to try it again as maybe the bottle you had was not right. A possible output could be that this wine profile doesn't fit with your palate, as I think you may like more pungent and mineral whites. Admiting that would be more suitable and elegant than trashing a wine - with bullet proof history - like you did.

@neecies: who went nuts on this wine was Neal Martin, not JM.

Consistent with previous notes. Drank over two days. Needs to let it breath. Nose with red fruit, smoke, pepper, vanilla. Palate with vanilla and roasted coffee, still has wood and tannins too present. I enjoyed much more in day one. (90-91)

A little boring, a little flabby, a little overripe, a little oaky. Not bad, not exciting.

  • Comment posted by Periko:

4/21/2013 8:41:00 AM - You mean oaky on palate? This wine is aged in stainless steel tanks only, so there's no way to find oak in palate and even less on nose. Maybe some "fat" on palate because of yeast?

  • Comment posted by Periko:

4/21/2013 2:50:00 PM - Hello again. I wrote the comment because, aside of the oak thing, I was a bit surprised as I had the 08 of this wine but it was rigth the opposite: pungent, mineral, saline and probably on the "thin" side. Thanks for the feedback.

Tasted at La Musica del Vi. Barrel sample. Dark. A lot of wood, vanilla on nose, red fruit. Primary and monolithic. Super tannic, fruity, balanced, high acidity, very long finish. (92-93)

    1/3/2013 6:58:00 AM - Hello Philippe,

It's difficult for me to compare, as I tasted both 2009 and 2010 in the same session and the latter still had to go 9 more months in barrel. With that being said, 2010 had a a very good balance, tannins and fruit despite the amount of noticiable wood. These wines need a lot of time in bottle. In Ribera, 2009 has been an "hedonistic" vintage, while 2010 is more femenine and elegant. Both are a can't miss vintage and I surely will get my PS2010 soon.
    Hope this helps.

Dark purple color. Nose of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, dark fruit. More of the same and a bit too oaky for me on the palate. Came across a bit flat in terms of flavor and there was some heat on the back end. Nose was the best part of the wine. 100 pts JM? Really?

Black berry fruits, earth, leather, chocolate in both the bouquet as well as the taste. Pleasant acidity, soft tannin with still a good bite. The wine is ready now and will stay on this level for some years; at least until 2015.

So do you feel confident this can hold a bit longer? I still have one bottle left that would like to hold couple years max... some ppl told me this should be drunk up, mostly due to the conditions of that vintage (extreme heat). Thanks,

Served this semi-blind to 50 ppl. Couldn't have said it better than one of the participants; "This feels like a wine that ws created *only* to get high scores".

To me this is grape-rape. Smoky, burnt, almost south african. Extracted, too much of a muchness, too little faith in Mencia and way too much belief in fancypants coldsoaking and overoaking. Which is terribly sad, because underneath all manipulation is a layer of exciting spicy and flowery typicity.

Points collected for structure and acidity, the body is medium-full and mouth-feel plesant. Pass.

    7/6/2012 7:57:00 AM - Hello Peblin,
Im no mencia expert and I agree Demencia is probably a bit more ripe than other mencias. However, I would like you to note that this wine is probably one of the most natural, grape firendly or whatever you want to call wine projects where the winemaker "intrusion" into the grape growing is non-existent. This wine is what these few vineyard plots and its vines give, nothing else. Also, the production is super tiny at 6,000 bottles. Also, I see this is 2007, which seems to need a few more time laying down. Finally, just out of curiosity at the comment of one of your guests, this wine has never been rated, tasted to be rated or sent samples to rate.
Hope this helps to "see" it a bit different.

Bierzo has for me been the best discovery of the last 2 years. The quality is mind blowing given the average price. £10-£15 can turn out a top quality bottle. If you havent dabbled then I strongly advise seeking out - the Mencia grape has a great future. Raul Perez is one of the more famous proponants in this region and this wine was a great example. Had this open for a few days now, and it has softened beautifully, without losing any of its initial intensity. Fresh nose that oozes spice and red berry, but the palate is where this wine springs to life. Just perfect balance with the ripe grippy tannins, refreshing acidity and juicy fruit, sent off with a good medium finish. This wine will certainly improve over the short to medium term. 91++

I honestly don't know how to rate this wine.... Mind you: It wasn't flawed or anything and I enjoyed it very much but it was everything I hoped it would be and it was everything I feared it would be - if that makes any sense... Everything you can read about this wine is true, I guess... Big, bold, "american oakey", "not european", unrecognizable as either Mourvedre or monastrell and thus an easy target for "those of us" who love our wines to have a sense of place, great balance between acidity, fruit, flavour, body and intensity and "european coolness" to the structure and overall impression of the wine... well, this wine had neither of these things....

However, from reading this fantastic source of information (CT) and from Parker's (overtly?) enthusiastic note I will say this: This wine delivered everything I hoped for! I served it with my good old mom's steaks made from localy raised beef (southern islands of Denmark), and when she said she had bought chili/bearnaise-sauce (wtf?!?) off the supermarket shelf to go with the steak I thought "Hey, I have just the wine". And as said, this wine delivered! Mind you, she likes a big, bold Amarone/ripasso styled wine with preferably low acidity and if it has a bit of residual sweetnes it gets even better and this wine featured both but somehow it retained a sort of balance and knowing roughly what Clio would be, I very much enjoyed this! I tried the 2002 some years ago (this 2006 is my second Clio) and this left a nearly identical impression, prehaps this was slightly better balanced? - if you can talk about balance in a wine like this - I know for sure that mom and dad, only knowing Jumilla as a 3€/bottle supermarket wine, couldn't believe how good it tasted. Isn't that what it's all about?

I understand why people like this wine... I would have liked it about 4 years ago, But today I find the oak way to obtrusive... it reminds me of why I stay away from high scoring spanish and napa wines... the fruit would have been nice if I could discern past the oak and it showed some more interesting complexity ... waited on it a day to hope the oak blew off... it only became more prominate and dominated the finish to the point of a frustrating experience... just not at all my style. I always play in these regions and only find myself back in Piedmonte or Bourgogne, PAtti could'nt drink it and opened a 12$ wine from Ventox that she enjoyed much more... I was jealous as I stayed with the SRT to get something for my 40$

2/10/2012 1:06:00 AM - These wines are usually way more approchable after 3-4 years. This wine was released in mid 2010. There's no way, if you find oak intrusive now, that you could have drank upon its release (even less 4 years ago when this was still unreleased). It's weird though that after a day, oak was still noticiable, maybe because 2006 is a "soft " vintage. Nowadays 2003 is drinking beautiful.

from Magnum. a quiet nose to start. a subtle brown lees that i may be imagining in its age. subtle kerosene and mineral driven nose. water texture upfront and waxy at the mid-palate and finish. an ashen minerality on the finish. pleasure of subtlety and texture here. "pear and cinnamon" from Ben. very nice as we all thought this would be D.E.A.D. The 2004 vintage was bottled into 550 magnums. No mention of 750s!!!! 2004 appears to be the first vintage of Pedrouzos.

9/21/2011 6:17:00 PM - There's no 750's, all bottles are magnums... average of 500-700 mags/per year. It's just a rarity bottle of wine and very difficult to get a hold of... even here in Spain.. and even at €70-80. Enjoy.
