A really nice bottle of wine that we enjoyed over dinner at The Plumed Horse. A full flavored wine with pear being the headliner on the palate and a nice toasty nose.

A rare misstep from Shafer. Out of balance, and the fruit has a faint urinal cake smell to it similar to what I get from a lot of lower end Syrah/Shiraz.

This wine has really fleshed out, riper than prior bottles, but still shows classic, creamy lemon like a good Burg. Where CA Chardonnay typically leans toward pineapple, butterscotch and oak, this wine is much more pear, apple and lemon/lime acidity. So balanced with loads of depth and character.

    Great minds, I guess.

Too oaky!! All I'm going to say, hides the terrior! oh well, 2010 vs 2009? The 2009 crushes it!

3/27/2013 5:04:00 PM - I just tasted the 2009 against the 2010, because they're priced and rated the same. I read your note and TOTALLY agree. Far less character in the 2010.

First bottle of six. I had expected a floral, Côte Rôtie look-alike style from this wine. But this wine had a more masculine in-your-face kind of attitude with tons of green and red pepper together with roasted meat in the nose. The wine had a meaty profile with mature black fruit and some smoke and I detected no floral notes. The palate was dominated by pepper backed up by warm - albeit not cooked - black fruit and roasted flavours. The wine had not an elegant profile. But it was a very good, powerful, straightforward and peppery one with some underlying complexity. Based on other users' notes, I conclude that this was not a representative bottle. I hope to find a more floral and elegant style in some of my remaining bottles.

Wow, this wine was really on! Nose of roasted meats, smoke, blue fruit, violets and other floral aromatics.
The palate was very well balanced... Lots of cool blue fruit, silky tannins, roasted flavours and good acidity. Everything was in perfect equilibrium. This was a good mélange between new world and old world style.

Winebow's ICON tasting (RPM Italian, Chicago, IL): Nose: Perfumed, but with a robust quality to it with gorgeous and flowing tones of black cherries, spice tones, roasted herbs, licorice, earth tones, and some florals as well. There is very good depth to this as well.

Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and massive tannins. The feel is very good underneath the massive tannins with really good and robust tones of black cherries, spices, roasted herbs, licorice, and floral tones.

Overall: This is a wonderful wine that should get better and better with age. There is a headiness to the tones on the nose and the structure shows the youth of the wine.

Not even close to a traditional bordeaux. Very disappointing. If I wanted a fruit bomb, I'd go buy a cheap California cabernet. Scary to think that there are french winemakers convinced that they have to make the same style of wine to compete in the US market. Blah...

1/28/2013 7:16:00 PM - Agree , with part of your assessment . It does resemble a West Coast wine. More like a Washington bordeaux blend , to me. Still enjoyable, and great at the price. I'd give it an 89.

So I'm rating this one way up for one simple reason. In my personal and humble opinion no one does a more interesting and better complex wine than Randall Graham in this wine. It will pair with virtually anything and I have never had anyone say anything short of spectacular when I open this up. Compare that to your 100-plus dollar options where you sort of expect it and when it falls short you feel slighted. This won't happen with this wine.

4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Mike & Cyndi's): Garnet color. Aromas of blue fruit, violets & lavender and blackberry. Massive tannins; flavors of black and blue fruit, caramel too. With air, notes of tar, brown sugar and dill appear- teh dill starts to dominate. Long finish. Guessed Petite.

Cream, kirsh and spice. Rather lush, round and polished. Medium acid, good tannin, decent finish. Not inspiring.
