Transparent yellow color. Baked apples on the nose. Medium body, medium acid. Very thick on the palate with green apples and orange marmalade on the front, lots of wood mid-palate that through everything out of balance and a harsh finish that was more like scotch. Will have to give this one another chance in a couple years, but was pretty disappointed today.

    12/28/2021 3:28:00 PM - Nice note, have the same feelings about these RM chardonnay SC bottlings. Seems be more miss than hit. Love the scotch note on the finish as it seems a perfect note along with the wood not being integrated. I too will wait on other bottles some time. Keep up the good notes.

As the years go by, I’m less impressed by the “standard” KB bottlings. Generally I do prefer the RRV to Sonoma Coast; yet it seems the quality of the boutique single appellation wines that they launched with the 2016 vintage are the current focus. The last couple of standard vintages have been less remarkable than they were 5+ years ago, possibly due to the change in winemaking style or change in ownership, or my preferences and palate. In any case, I think I’ll reduce the volume of my purchases from KB going forward and pickup a little Cerise, Treehouse, and Bootleggers here and there.

    4/7/2021 2:46:00 PM - Agreed, these bottlings are not up to the past vintages. Agree with your preception. Style, preference and maybe change in ownership. Does not seem worth the $82 release price anymore and seems with ownership change becoming more of a commodity wine. I too have decided to pass on these wine but still pick up some single bottlings here and there. Here in North Jersey you can see the wines now in many retailers for slightly above release price.

Classic Duckhorn, quintessential Napa merlot. Big structure that tastes best in a big glass, where the aeration gives the structure justice. Magical majestic wine that would be rated higher with more structural and flavor complexity and depth, as well as length. Amazing nose and bouquet of earth, plum, cherry and dark fruit. A little bit on the sweeter end in smaller glasses...

Reason why was back in the early 2000's I had this wine at steakhouse in South Florida and was magical for me too with NY strip. Agree a little more structure needed but still a solid merlot. If you can grab a bottle the Three Palms Vineyards Merlot from Duckhorn and put a little age on it a you will get the better structure and a real treat.

Easy to drink and enjoy. High quality red raspberry and red berry notes on a smooth and seamless delivery. Very nice mouthfeel and fresh on the palate. I think this is very nice but there are others that deliver as much or more with greater value. KB has earned its place over its lifespan as a premier Pinot producer. This is a great appellation wine by any estimate, no flaws or shortcomings but I look for a bit more of a “wow” factor at this price point.

Very enjoyable wine from Kutch, clean, crisp, lemon notes with a touch of salinity. Very easy drinking wine that Cousin Pudge thoroughly enjoyed and was not served to cold and seemed to open up nicely. The oak is not even noticeable in this wine.

Think it could use some more time or long decant but their is good stuff in here. Blueberry, currant, some lavender and on the finish a fine white pepper finish. Will rebuy for the cellar. Cousin Pudge said it was just OK as he prefered the Tensley Colson Canyon '18.

    2/9/2020 4:35:00 PM - Yeah I know Cousin Pudge just thought the Tensley was a bit smoother. I myself thought the Ramey offered more complexity and with more time in the glass improved. Both wines had a nice mouthfeel but with more cellar time the Ramey will excel. Here in North Jersey some vendors have a lot or Ramey '14 Rodgers Creek for $43 a bottle so I will stock up and cellar!!!

Nose: A blend of the pits of stone fruit, guava skin, bitter minerals, some dried grass/straw, a little bit of bitter honey, and a slight but firm spice along with oak. There's also a little bit of slightly toasted bread.

Palate: Some sort of yellow fleshed fruit like pear, guava skins, pleasantly bitter minerals, and some fibers of dried out pineapple flesh. Great juiciness that makes the bitterness and minerals seem almost prickly.

Medium light gold color. Dry with little to no tannin. Medium-plus to full body with medium-plus acidity. Great finish of at least 20+ seconds. Great fruit with the right amount of acidity to help keep everything together and somehow allows every individual note to shine on its own. There is good energy in the acidity that brings freshness and intensity to the wine. One of the better Chardonnay's I've had in a while (even though I haven't had much). Looking forward to to getting more and trying Ramey's other Chardonnays from different sites. As good as this is now, I can imagine this getting even better with some time in the bottle.

Other notes: No decant, time in glass only. Burgundy glass. Served ~55° and consumed within an hour.

    1/30/2020 7:24:00 PM - You picked the right man, Dave Ramey for single vineyard chards. I tend to use Ramey as the benchmark or guideline for Cali chards. Also try the RRV chard at half the price that punches above it price.

Money and being able to purchase above said wines is hard enough. Also i have had Williams Selyem, Rivers-Marie and others and the QPR and being able to purchase comes into play.

Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 12/06/19 + 7 Shared Reds: “The 2016 Rochioli blend was 72% from Mid-40 block, clones 4 (1995) and 76 (1995 & 1998), and the remaining 28% is a combination of River block (clone 5 planted in 1989) and Allen Vineyard, which the Rochiolis have farmed for many yrs (clone 76 planted 2001 & 2005). Harvested 9/6 & 9/9/16 @ 22.9° Brix; We gently press whole clusters for phenolic delicacy. Native yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. After aging 20 mos in 20% new François Frères & Taransaud Beaune FR oak barrels, this Chard was fined & settled in tank following the next harvest. 901cases were then bottled without filtration In Dec ’19 @ $65.”

N: Vanilla, minerals, with notes of lemons & undertones of sandalwood

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish oak/frt met by a LOVELY acidity which transitions into a LONG, ALMOST puckerish finish with hints of swtness to come & the BAREST *glimpse* of a very, VERY slight bitterness. Chablis-like, but with that oak... Nonetheless, I found this preferable to other Chards I've had from this producer. For now & through '21? 14.5% ABV; My EXC-, which may well be low depending upon the what happens with the bitterness. 98 pts WE (10/1/19) @ $65, 95 Dunnuck (6/14/19, 94+ WA (Perroti-Brown, 4/'19), and 94 ea WS (6/30/19) & Vinous (Galloni, 5/1/19)! [By all means, DO check with this vendor if interested in their *very* COMPETITIVE price!]

FYI, while I'm apparently NOT a fan of this producer's Chards :( , I *did* prefer this bottling over their ’16 Fort Ross & Woolsey Chards.

    1/30/2020 7:17:00 PM - Sorry you are not a fan of Dave Ramey :( , been drinking his wines for many years and find his Chards to be classic and the benchmark for many SV wines. When comparing to other winemakers I tend to use Ramey as the baseline towards seeing what others can do with the single vineyards. I tend to really enjoy the RRV chard as well at half the cost and find it very consistent year to year. On another note I am still waiting for the 2018 Merry Edwards SB here in North Jersey from what I here from the grapevine (no pun intended) it is a good vintage returning to the old form of SB from previous years. Keep up the fine CT note as always.

N: Slightly closed; Tropical frt with notes of grass, & a creaminess?

P: MF body; Rndish entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by an almost puckerish acidity that DOES loosen as it evolves into a LONG, balanced, tangy/swt finish with HINTS of a bit of very, VERY slight bitterness that would be a + with food. An IMPRESSIVE effort for now & likely through '21! 14.1% ABV; My EXC+. [Check with this vendor if interested in their *very* COMPETITIVE price.]

Note: Also tasted on 11/9 & 11/30/19.

    1/21/2020 7:44:00 PM - SRH I have been drinking ME SB since early 2000's & love this elegant SB. It seems around 2014 and after as case production ramped up the creaminess on the finish seemed to go away with more of a tangy finish. The old finish I would say was a creamsicle like long finish. It seems to have lost a little zip but still a impressive wine. Love your TN notes especially the technical notes and history of the wines. I always wonder as case production goes from 3k to 6k to 10+k does the sourcing of the fruit seem to affect the end product. Also the sale to a big champagne house looking for more of a Premium Commodity wine. Anyway just my thoughts and hoped this will help you out. Keep up the Fine TN.
