12/3/2023 - Brian of Mull Likes this wine: NR

I bought this to try something of the 2015 vintage where I don’t have much in my cellar (2 cases only I think). Opened for 3 hours. Color is quite deep ruby / purple. On the nose: Warm plums, cassis, hint of cinnamon, leather and graphite. Excellent nose. On the palate: Rich ripe plums, cassis, berry liquor , dark chocolate and baking spices. Very long and great depth of flavor. Never had this wine before. It is really good. I will go back to the store and see if they still have more. Very good value for money in this.

Mull that’s a great island love walking around the coast particularly in the Tireragan Nature Reserve … keep enjoying the wine 🍷 There was a good review about the chateau in Decanter a month or so ago.

Lots of oak vanilla on the nose & palate. Ripe fruit typical of CA Pinot’s. I still can enjoy this style periodically but don’t want a steady diet of it.

10/31/2023 2:06:00 AM - Thanks WineGuyDelMar in reference to the Bordeaux 2014 pricing . You are quite right to say that 2014 St Estephe’s are very close price wise to the 2015 vintage , however as you probably are aware 2015 had tricky vintage conditions with some chateaux particularly St Estephe , less so other communes . The alcohol levels are also quite high. After this with the exception of 2017 there is a marked increase. Generally across the board fine wine prices have stalled or have dropped somewhat so it’s a buyers market at the moment . Lucky us being able to enjoy these wines . I am about to head to the Outer Hebrides for a week so have made a raid in the cellar to share with a friend 😀

Great from the pnp.....fragrant white flowers, a hint of butterscotch, a touch of oak and citrus. Palate is medium weight and just a slight tad creamy. This is royalty.....comes across better chilled than at room temp where it can trend a little to the flat side. The acidic backbone is wonderful and carries the wine to a great end point. So important to know how these animals play out to get the very best of them! My mouth is still watering after swallowing for 30-45 seconds.....goes great with a chicken Caesar salad with spicy artisanal garlic......borders on a 95.

They have evolved considerably the last two decades. I used to travel to work there every year for a couple of months so know the country and it’s culture quite well. All the best and enjoy life …

The nose of this was absolutely phenomenal. Everyone in our group just kept smelling their glass. Mostly red fruits and spice. Great mouthfeel and very long finish. A one hour decant. Wish I had another bottle to see where this is in another 5 years. Wotn for me.

This was much more energetic and bright in its youth with time this has changed considerably probably at its best a few years ago. It’s. Its not as sweet as it was though the flavours of dried apricot are attractive. There is decent length but more worrying is there is very little acidity to keep this ageing for the long term. For me this need to drunk within the next few years . I have tasted wines from the 1990 vintage from Huet and these wines were still drinking well at 20 years of age.

4/5/2022 4:27:00 AM - Thanks Gaet always good to get information. The vintage I mentioned was 1990 and not 1989 which was a spectacular vintage in the Loire. As you know there are many 1er cru sites and I did not mention a particular wine only that I had sampled wines from the 1990 vintage. Regardless it’s what you think that matters regarding one’s experience when tasting wine we are all different.

Clear ruby with a brown hue, fine concentration of color. Classic nose of dark cherries with that typical core bitterness, complemented by tones of tobacco, dry wood and something reminiscent of fortified wine (alcohol?). Full bodied attack, lots of dark cherries and core bitterness on the mid palate, high acidity and dry tannins join forces to make a quite heavy package for the aftertaste. The aftertaste is (very) fresh, long, and with a fine fruit core (cherries). Some warmth (alcohol) can be detected at the end. A very good wine, but really for food, probably best with hearty meat (game or lamb). I am a bit worried about the aging potential of this wine as it is dominated by acidity at the moment, and it dominates the fruit. Will it dry out, or will the fruit survive?

You certainly need a lot of patience with Bordeaux I was optimistic that this would be an enjoyable and approachable vintage. My advice would be if you intend sampling this give it a long decant at least 4 hours or let this rest in the cellar for another few years at least if it’s your only bottle. Initially this was very tight but with aeration this did open up and by the second half of the bottle with friends it was much more expressive and I did enjoy the contents . 92 for now but I can see this worthy of a few more points with further aging.

3/9/2022 11:55:00 AM - WineGuyDelMar thanks for your feedback one is always learning with wine and that’s only possible if you taste wine for yourself. It poses the question though depending on one’s age whether it’s worth it to buy en-primeur if in a good vintage it won’t evolve for 20 years. It probably makes more sense to buy wines that are mature or wines that are ready for drinking. Glad you have some right bank 09/10 that are showing well. I have a half case of Larcisse Ducasse 2015 but I am not tempted at this point. Some wines but not all wines from the 2012 vintage are giving enormous pleasure. I am a big fan of dry German Riesling and also traditional Rioja’s they don’t often disappoint.

3/9/2022 12:39:00 PM - I bought a very healthy amount of both the 2015 and 2016 Bordeaux in various formats if I don’t get round to drinking some of them they will be fantastic investments. Thanks for the tips on the Rioja’s I was just looking the last few days at the 2010 Vina Tondonia Reserva and was considering taking the plunge. I have good supplies of both La Rioja Alta 904 and 809 Gran Reserva’s from 2004 & 2005. Wine though is something to be enjoyed in moderation for me it’s a treat at the end of the week after keeping active all week playing golf, tennis and road running there is nothing better than a clear head, an energetic body and a good nights sleep….

Impressive St Joe. on the richer, earthy, dark fruited side. A satisfying mid-winter winter wine, drinking well.. What I wanted - & good value!

2/15/2022 12:00:00 PM - Hello Guillaume-En-Egypte … It was my intent to reply to you regarding your appreciated response regarding the ll Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2010 however I have no idea how one sends a personal note as there does not seem to be a link to replying directly that I can see.

Yes I don’t think you need to worry about opening up a bottle now particularly if you have a half case . The wine has moved into a wonderful phase of drinkability the secondary flavours is what we all enjoy about a mature wine.

I even drank the wine marginally below room temperature bringing it up from a cool and humid underground Scottish cellar .

I guess one of the reasons as wine aficionados we read reviews on CT is that we are looking for some kind of uniformity of agreement as to a wines current enjoyment. As you know it’s not an exact science and everyone’s taste does vary somewhat. There are so many factors at play, proper glassware, temperature, food or without food, and company is always welcome if only to gauge opinion.

One has to be open minded and I have to say some of my fondest moments drinking wine have been wines of modest repute.

Great Bordeaux whilst enjoyable often leaves me perplexed particularly their drinking windows . I currently have good quantities of the 2018, 2016,
2015, 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2009 and a few cases of older wines from 2000 which I have not opened . Of those vintages only the 2012 with some chateaus are giving real pleasure the remainder have a long time before they reach maturity and as one ages one wonders if we will get to drink these wines . Perhaps it’s a better idea to purchase mature vintages rather than en-primeur which unless for future financial return seems not such an attractive idea.

    Happy wine drinking 👍. John.

Drank this at Kam Boat with my wine mates. Theme of the night: Wines that start with B.

Criomson red in colour, with very fragrant floral notes on the nose. Beautiful wine which has aged very gracefully with an amazing maturity and pleasantry. Wines which are 30 years or older usually have sour plum notes, or odor that comes with extensive aging. This wine has none of them.

Soft, gentle, feminine, and charming.

Well...what more can I write about this?

My friend, olddomion, poured it for me double blind. Minimal bricking, deep crimson to purple. The only words that I could speak upon smelling the wine were: thank you! Once again, it took me for great vintage, 2nd Growth Pauillac, possibly Graves, on account of the effusive gravel, smoke, worn leather, drying tobacco, and charred black earth. The longer it breathed the deeper it became. Mesmeric!

A veritable monster on the palate, in every good way, and a young monster at that. The wine packs mind-bending substance and weight, while retaining incomprehensible lift and balance. Nuance and appeal at every turn, without flaws. Upon reveal, all the Pauillac-like lit cigar and charred earth made sense.

The greatest bold red QPR of my wine lifetime to date. It will seemingly last for another two or three decades.

The 2015 Gourt de Martens has been widely praised by numerous critics for myself as much as I enjoyed the wine I did not fall head over heels for this vintage. Immediately on the palette there was a ripe sweetness that did not appeal to me, attractive berry aromas, the structure felt a bit unbalanced and I found the alcohol on the finish a touch too much. At this stage I much preferred the 2010& 2012 vintages. I have other bottles of this so will return to this offering in around 3-5 years this is one reason why you should try wines young and if you agree with a wine critics assessment. A lot of the time I do not........

Other vintages of the Gourt de Mautens were more accessible in their youth and immensely enjoyable. There is no pattern in the region I have consumed CNDP 2015 that have been drinking really well as well as many other Northern Rhone 2015 wines.

This is so far the best of the 2016 CDPs which almost all showed great with so much fresh black, blue and red fruit. Not liquor-like, not too ripe and with great harmony, masking all the alcohol perfectly. A true masterpiece. I encourage everybody to taste these 2016 young. Clearly the best vintage I‘ve ever encountered. I guess I should sell all other vintages to further stock up on these beauties.

TN: Very harmonious nose with intense, fresh dark forest fruit, cherries, spices, herbs, hints of minerality. So sexy and pure. Very ripe but incredibly pure blackberries, cherries, blueberries, with more time and higher temperature more and more red fruit; lots of spices and fresh herbs and crushed rocks. Weightless texture, airy and light but intense and precise. Very fine tannin, superb freshness and a great, fruit- and herb-driven finish.

Decanting: No extensive decant needed. This was great right from the start.
