Really enjoyed but I tend to enjoy high abv wines, strong dark fruits and some coniferous notes. Would be interested to try a lower alcohol bottling of this one as it would probably offer more complexity. Also curious on how the chapelle compares.

5/10/2024 9:22:00 AM - It depends a lot on the producer but cooler vintages have been 2021, 2013 and 2008 but 08 was a pretty rough vintage overall so I'd stay away from that one. 2013 would be the ideal vintage to check seeing as it's already got some age on it as well. The Delas Côte-Rôtie 2021 Seigneur de Maugiron was around 12.5% and honestly pretty great. I think I wrote the TN on that one a couple weeks back if you want to check

This wine has varietal characteristics, but it's rough, bitter, and tannic. I don't think it will be drinkable for at least another 25 years. There's no excuse for making a wine this mean.

Interesting wine. Did not expect it to be this intense. A lot of oxidation. The color was light gold. The nose you could smell across the room, it was almost like cream liquor mixed with limoncello. There is some wood aging which shows on the palate, but it kinda tastes like savagnin trying to be hard liquor. I both dislike and enjoy this. Very interesting wine with a very long finish. Much better when had with old cheese as well as blue cheese. Curious to try more but I won't run after them

Edit: putting it at 86 instead of 92. After trying it again the next day, I can easily say I simply dislike this. It is extremely unique but not in way that makes you like it. I really tried forcing myself to accept it weirdness the other day and that I just wasn't used to this style. No, it's just not that good. All the flavors are out of whack and unbalanced and it just gets worse the more you taste it. Very obnoxious wine, that is very much not worth its price tag. It won't get better with age either

  • Comment posted by DevenStephens:

4/1/2024 1:02:00 AM - I'm fine with oxidative styles as long as they're well made. Aged Tondonia or Gravonia Blanco is amazing. This had an unbalance to it that just made it unappealing. I'm sure that some wines in this style are good. But this one based on my experience and personal taste was not.

Syrah's of the World Blind Tasting; 8/5/2023-8/6/2023: Syrah's of the world blind tasting! 4 Syrah's, 4 continents, 4 gems!

The 4 wines were served blind. 1st was Guigals Hermitage 2017 from France, 2nd was K Vintner, Cattle King 2015 from the US, 3rd was Porselenberg 2020 from South Africa and 4th was Penfolds St Henri 2018 from Australia.

This was more of a dark red color, the smell was incredibly funky! I got old wet hay, red fruits and coffee on the nose. On the palate this was a little less funky but very enjoyable with cherry, tobaco, smoke and pepper. Having had another South African Syrah in the past month it was very similar (but better). It also evolved really nicely in the glass. This is a really weird (in a good way) wine and finished with 93+.

  • Comment posted by DevenStephens:

The other tasting note here hits the nail on the head. Beautiful color, dark red turning purple. Nose with black fruits, violets and some vanilla. Palate has pepper, blackberry, black cherry. Chalky tannins with a medium finish. Well made and good for the price

Payed 125$. Blind tasted against a St-Emilion priced at 50$ and one at 25$ (Trianon and Jean-Pierre Moueix).

This one didnt show very well in the tasting. Very closed off, the aromatics just don't show much compared to the Trianon. (And the Trianon was in a strangely shaped glass) on the nose: the most chocolaty of the 3, almost a chocolate milk smell. Some cherry. On the palate: plum, black cherry and cassis. Chocolate and cloves. Long finish. All very subdued and closed. Need to work to get notes out. Due to the long finish it's pretty obvious that the quality is here but it's so closed off that it didn't show it's best during the tasting and took second place behind the Trianon which was way more beautiful at that moment.

I originally gave this 89points vs the Trianon's 91 (JPmoueix was 83) but I tasted this again today. Showing much better on day two with a lot more richness, Chocolate and fruits showing. I'm bumping it up to 93pts but I don't think this wine is worth it's asking price.

Another edit is that this score has been pumped up like crazy by the other tasters here. Tasting notes are a personal opinion but there's no way this gets close to 100 points ever. And I bought this due to their high ratings only to be disappointed. Fool me once.

1/28/2024 4:33:00 PM - I always forget to mention that my prices are in CAD$ which comes to around 90$ for me. I am well aware that this is still too young and I'm sure with time it might gain a point or two. It's a good wine but I still feel like the score was pumped up quite a bit. At this price range, greatness should be obvious and I don't feel like I was drinking the same wine as they were.

I want to start this by saying that I feel like the nose and palate should get different scores. So I will try to separate both in this tasting note. First off the color is light red with orange in the rim.

The nose was bewitching. I swear I spent nearly 30 minutes just smelling the wine. It just has so much going on. Dried strawberries, blood oranges, grapefruit, passion fruit and candied sour cherries. I woke up a childhood memory and maybe some of you know what this is, but Strawberry Fruitopia. It's a sweet fruit drink popular around here and this has a smell that makes me think of that. Seriously though, you can smell this wine a fair distance from the glass, it comes to get you and lure you in. A smell that makes you curious about the taste but at the same time, how could it get any better? To me the smell was near perfect. I could give it 100 points, it's that special and unique. Could more aging actually make this better?

Now the palate. I have to agree with Rob, this is an electric wine with a lot of energy. Strawberries, raspberries, cranberries so on the sour red fruit side. Oranges, roses, incense and red sour cherries. Fine tannins and high acidity, it has a very long finish with some licorice hiding in there as well. It's very enjoyable to drink now but I feel like some time in the cellar would make this a stellar wine on the palate. To me where the palate is right now is worth 95 points but it can absolutely only go up from here.

Together the nose and palate make for a truly outstanding wine, an amazing experience to drink. The nose is near perfection and the palate is beautiful. Really curious on what 5-10-15+ years would do to this wine. For now, 97+ points makes sense to me. I think it could go higher with some time. I will be remembering that smell for a long time.

The '19 Barbaresco is a wild young wine. Immediately after uncorking, a rush of floral and sweet, hard candy like fruit aromas burst out of the bottle.

In the glass, the aromatics of the wine are super expressive and captivating. I found an exotic expression with blood orange and grapefruit, hard candy like red fruits and red floral tones, spices, and chalk. On the palate, the wine is electric with high acidity and a beautiful sweetness to the fruit. There's so much energy here that it is a thrill to drink even if it is not nearly as expressive on the palate as the aromatics. Sweet red fruit and floral tones, a hint of fresh orange and grapefruit are joined by smoke / incense on the long finish, with a bit of a Pinot-like fruit and smoke/spice profile on the finish. There is a lot of tannin, but it's so fine grained and there is so much energy that the wine is fun to drink already, for my taste. That said, I think this wine is likely to be best after a long time in the cellar. This seems equally, if not more, age-worthy than the wines from Barolo from Vietti in '19.

Okay, Rioja... we've had a problem here.
But let's start from the beginning. In 2018 I had a 2011 vintage and it was like 95 points wine.
How about this one. The smell is fantastic. Blackberry, blueberry, plum, smoke. All of them are very strong and well defined.
Taste? Alcohol thrives from beginning to the end. No good. And if you add acidity to the picture...
What else can I say? Drinkable, but without satisfaction.
Big disappointment.
Fortunately it's only 17€

At 12 years, I would give this one more time to achieve a better balance. It will certainly work for many people. I’ve had a different year prévu and it was fine. Fruits are forward for sure. Aroma of oak, berry and a bit of leather. On the palate, red berry, including cherry, dominate. Surprised by the acidity. The mild tannins were expected I would say this should drink nicely in about another 4-6 years.

Grenache blind tasting of the world! Comparing Grenache from Australia, France, USA and Spain.
Order served blind was:
#1 Ochota Barrels Grenache The Fugazi 2021 (90pts)
#2 Domaine Giraud Grenache de Pierre 2019 (94pts)
#3 Cayuse God Only Knows Grenache 2019 (93pts)
#4 Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2020 (92pts)
Also included my points for each so you know where I ranked them.

Here are my notes for the Cayuse God Only Knows:
Light red color. Nose is incredible, if you've had Cayuse before you'd recognize it immediately. That barnyard funk, dry aged meat and canned mushrooms (my sister found this note and its undeniably that). Palate was a tad bitter at first and needed a couple hours to smooth out the rough edges. Still incredibly funky and extremely unique. Barnyard, meaty, mushrooms and forest floor. This was better with food honestly and the only thing showing that this is grenache is the light red fruits hidden under all the weird but interesting notes. As unique as this was, I can't give it that high a score. It's good but tries to impress by being the weird one and comes off as pretentious. I'd be really curious on trying this one with some age.
