Great QPR. Big napa cab style but fairly good complexity in addition to the fruit. Dark fruit, full bodies, green notes. Can taste the alcohol a bit (15.4%) but it’s not overwhelming. Ready to drink now. Fine on pop and pour but improves with air.

Easy buy if you like this style.

Great Napa cab.

Deep herbaceous nose and lush, deep, and dark fruited on the palate. Only grabbed a bottle of this, but damn, it was nice. Definitely looking for a few more bottles, for when I want a darker, brooding cab.

Very good stuff.

Silky smooth, mid-weight, lengthy and lingering taste that brings out the different flavors of the different varietals. Very enjoyable wine with a pleasing freshness. High quality wine worth seeking.
Typically Hendry is able to pick slightly less than two tons per acre of Cabernet Sauvignon and slightly more than two tons per acre for the other Bordeaux varietals in this blend, of which Merlot is the highest percentage at 28%.
Hendry ferments each of these five Bordeaux varietals individually and then barrel ages them all for one year. After the first year of barrel aging, the final blend is created before returning the wine to barrel for the final six months, which develops a more subtle tannic structure than a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Aged for a total of 18 months in French oak barrels, 70-75% of which were new.

I enjoyed this Bordeaux blend from Hendry. The spice of cab comes through in the nose, but it is softened with the blend of the other grapes on the palate and finish. Near perfect balance throughout.

Blind tasting of 8 Petite Sirah’s, Hendry was the winner on all 4 ballots. Classic Petite aromas in the glass and black fruit on the pallet. Fruit is ripe but not overripe or signs of RS. It is in a great spot now but will easily go for another 5+ years.

This is just tremendous. Overly tremendous. The depth of flavors and the complexity. It’s maybe technically a Bordeaux blend, but the percentages are almost inverse, with far more Malbec and Petit Verdot than Cab, Cab Franc, and Merlot than a typical Bordeaux blend. And it works so well. Just love this wine. Have several more bottles slightly younger and I can’t wait to drink them.

Let me start by saying this wine needs air! It was tight and unimpressive straight from the bottle on day 1, but by day 2 and 3, it was delicious. The nose was pear with citrus and peach, plus a touch of floral overtones. On the palate, a nice minerality and acid became dominant with minimal oak, and a long light finish. I liked it a bit cooler than a typical chardonnay, probably because it reminds me more of chablis. A lovely drink with a number of years ahead of it.

Two more years in. This bottle seems to have lost a little character. Still good, but less distinctive. Hope these aren’t fading prematurely.

[blind tasting, bracketed comments are the guesswork].

pale straw and medium body in the glass. smokey notes pervade the nose of ripe pear and almond that also has flinty and zesty whiffs. buttery in the mouth, there is a bright acidic vein brightening the lean-feeling fruit while a chalky minerality and the smoky notes pull the flavours back to earthiness. some spice and saline notes provide accents and there is good length.

interesting – and very gastronomic – style of Chardonnay that incorporates the richness of the wood while maintaining a nerviness to the fruit. it is barrel-fermented (30% new French oak), but does not go thru malo.

[i did rather quickly guess Chardonnay from somewhere in California, or perhaps Oregon… not being a big CH drinker, i stopped there in the guesswork].

This wine is ridiculously good at this point. It’s drinking more or less perfectly for a Zin. Lots of fruit: Raspberry, ripe cherry, maybe even some muddled blackberry. Oak, cedar. Just maturing extremely well. Probably good for a number of years more even though Zins tend to not age much past 8 years. It’s just a super solid wine.

This was the final "Cab" of the night out of 6, and it stood up quite well. It showed sweeter in flavor but quite smooth and nicely balanced. It was definitely blended in taste/character, and was a great final wine to end an evening after 5 Heavy-duty Napa Cabernets.

shared with pat at selkirk manor. i continue to prune the cellar of bottles with past due drink by dates. the wine proved to be in sound condition. a remarkable showing for a nine year old california chard. the pale color does not create an expectation regarding how substantial the wine proved to be on the nose and the palate. generous flavor profile featuring yellow apple and some nutty/yeast aspects. made in a clean style with no buttery influences. enough acid to hold things together. medium body and finish. will enjoy the remaining bottle soon.

Dark, full-bodied and ripe wine that certainly validates the common lineage of primitivo and zinfandel. Hendry also makes a zin that is lighter than this. This one is more like a classic “big” zin, dark fruit nose, sweet attack on the tongue, and soft tannins on the finish. The 16.1 ABV is well-disguised.

A younger participant in a Cab bottle fest & dinner. This was all about potential. A peak behind the velvet curtain if you will. All the elements and the structure are there but its muted and reserved at present. Did respond well to bleu cheese and bleu cheese spread over the ribeye steak later. Had a 2012 version three years back and it was very good. I'll be getting my hands on a case of this and seeing how well it evolves and opens up over next 3-10 years. Thanks Dr. H!
