1929 Bodegas AGE Rioja

Tempranillo more

2/18/2023 - JRockEsq Likes this wine: 87 points

Method: glass at Augustine Wine Bar

Nose: meat/brisket, anise, black licorice, light cooked shiitake mushroom; great nose

Plate: cherry, light black pepper, light anise; medium finish; dry; good concentration, especially for its age; light+ body; medium- very fine tannin; medium- acidity

Overall thoughts: The palate's nothing special if you ignore the age of the wine (but impressive for it's age), but the nose is great and really carried this wine. Such a treat to try this. Good wine.

I reckon the previous comments were way too dismissive. This is perfectly good Rioja reserva, and it is still showing no sign of falling over. Of course it is not a blockbuster - it was never intended to be. Price for price it is far better value than many other areas, as Rioja has always been.

Even I could recognise this as Rioja in a blind tasting, very traditional, fleshy fruit with a good dollop of oaky vanilla. Should last for a few years yet.

Although still young this is drinking now. Good with lots of typical Rioja features, red fruit and oaky vanilla but not quite premier league.

Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. Garnet of medium intensity. The nose is quite expressive, with notes of tar, red fruit, smooth toasted touches, spicy nuances and a background of licorice. In the mouth has good attack, with intense but quite polished tannins, good acidity, with good bitter notes and a remarkable length. With some classic style.

blind tasting, nobody was guessing origine and age, in the nose a little bit oxidative, in the palate raisins, reminds me to an Amarone, good acidity, very balanced and long finish

On the nose with juniper, dark berries and a bit of creamy oak, yet very understated. On the palate balsamic sweet red fruit, very rounded and pleasant, mid-long finish and an excellent wine to accompany pasta. Enjoyed it, not the most complex and intellectual wine, but very quaffable.

Mejor no puntuar.

Aged Rioja's and a Ribera (NYC): very nice showing. Still has plenty of life, but would say this on the downward slope. Tasting stronger elements of sherry than other notes, but still very enjoyable.

Dark red appearance.
Nose is violets, vanilla, tobacco.
Taste is blackcurrant, though not over fruity, leather, oak. Finishes strongly of cherry.
A subtle and enjoyable rioja.

Deep nose of spices, cinnamon, clove, dried herbs and a touch vanilla oak, quite alluring at the beginning! Not a fruity nose I'm sure! Quite dense on the palate but surely lacking a little bit complexity! Given this is a ten year old wine! The color is deep ruby, very healthy! Guess the bottle has at least five to ten years to go! I pair the wine with goose, Chiu-Chow style! Which is absolutely wonderful! If it develops more complexity in the future, definitely will gain a point or two!
