2016 Leasingham Jam Shed Shiraz w Singapore Noodles

That type of hot that makes the front of your tongue feel like you have been chewing on peppercorns dipped in spices!
The bottle was opened yesterday for dinner, but far too much like a dry Shiraz for my liking... tonight it's had time to breathe & relax a bit.
When poured it's well and truly DARK, so dark I needed to turn lights on for the photos!

When sipped with the noodles it's almost sweet enough that you can pretend it's desert, possibly it would go nicely with a Berry or even Vanilla Ice Cream (I don't have any, or I would have tried that option)... with that in mind I decided to read the label, as they know far more about their wine than I will ever know.
It says "this medium body Shiraz shows rich and opulent red berry flavours balanced with a subtle hint of vanilla and spice"... well... they sure know their wine!
Overall; It's rather drinkable, just don't gulp it down.
Towards the end of the meal (& my tastebuds going into spice overload) the dryness returned became a Syrah again.
I'll see how another glass goes on it's own.

Hmmm, well, meh. Now I remember why I'm NOT a Shiraz Fan and this one is far too dry for my liking.

Very nice weight for cabernet. It was hard to pick the region. Red fruits and dark fruit and little licks of eucalypt. Tomato bush is about the place. Fair acid and tannin.

Found a bottle of this in my cellar which I don't quite recall buying. Under screw cap. Despite the extended and unintended ageing this drank well and representative of the Clare Valley style- rich plum fruit and earth. Enjoyable.

Dark colour, with little bricking. Surprisingly youthful. Lot's of primary dark & blue fruit, tobacco, plush well-integrated tannins, long finish. Definitely not flabby. It won't improve but still has plenty of life left.

{screwcap, 14.5%} Still a deep ruby. Classic Oz chocolate-mint nose. Nicely dark cabernet fruit on the palate, pointed acidity (real or powdered?). Mid-palate dip, faint grainy tannins, even if the oak flavours do seem controlled. Medium/full weight, dark and brooding. Medium length finish. Ok, but not entirely convincing.

Complex mix of mature fruit, elegant acidity and soft velvety tannins. Now at it's zenith this wine is a brilliant example of a 30 year old Aussie Cabernet which won a gold medal at the IWC in 1974.

Screwcap Needs food and a very long decant.

Was very good in its style, lean but full bodied and savory Clare cabernet with a good tannin line.

Day 2
Holding up well. A and looking more med bodied today without creamy oak dominating.

Deep and dark red, coming in at the rim but not yet browning.

Red and black fruit, ironstone, blood and black olive.

Oak has largely blown off overnight, black fruit, a touch of menthol, and a touch of cut lip, black olive, and red earth meet in the mid palate.

A touch of creamy oak, red and black fruit, and chewy tannins come in the back third. Tannins are red earth and salty black olive. Pure and perky and intense red and black fruit skins and iron (rust) and earth all come together in a very good length.

Lovely candy spearmint leaves, detail and not confected, mouth perfume reminds me of my youth.

This is very good to excellent in its style.

It's still got a way to go, still quite primary. I think the back label is bang on, this can be comfortably kept until age 15.

It tastes very Clare, cabernet, and big company polish but it's length and balance put it in to the excellent range even if I've grown out of this style some.

Great to see some high quality, true to place and style, wines still coming out of the Leasingham label.

Drink now with a big decant through to 2031. Really enjoyed this most rustic but high quality lens on the Clare Cabernet style. It's far better than the 2017 Shiraz from the same label.

Excellent. Now through 2031ish (it will not tire quickly). And will go further. This is one of those slow moving styles that can be put away for 18th birthdays. Clare cabernet is bulletproof.

I'm going to open a Wendouree, I'm in the mood for Clare now.

Very good CO2 still. Dark ruby in colour. Rich, full and generous sweet fruit. This wine is a classic and we eke out the few remaining ones we have, as they are no longer made. These guys wrote the book on sparkling burgundy. Elegant, stylish - an apex wine

Deep red colour with purple hues.

Very good example of Australian Shiraz.

Pepper is in the green spectrum showing a cooler vintage. Red crunchy fruit. Salty black olive and red earth and iron of Clare coming through the finish.

This is pop and pour, its a polished wine with some creamy oak that is slowly blowing off to reveal detail.

It's full bodied, but only just. Nice balance. The aftertaste offers fresh waves of crackling green pepper spice, iron and earth, and eucalypt. Decent length, but it's mostly through the middle where this wine shows form.

Wait 3-5 more years for the oak to fall off and more detail to show.

Caveat- a blocked nose this bottle.

One hour on....
It's leading with pepper, earth, eucalypt and black olive. Savoury length has really taken off. This is very good, pushing to excellent. Tannins are fine and dusty, acidity and freshness giving thrust.

Like the name says, pretty classic Clare Valley character here, but looking noticeably more matured than I would have expected for only 5yrs under screwcap.

I expected zingy lime juice with granny smith apple notes but it's evolving into Bickfords lime cordial with ripe red apple. Seemed slightly syrupy, maybe just a little residual sugar too?

Quiet lovely but a richer version of the style so don't pair with fresh seafood as I'd normally be inclined to, should be great with pork. Maybe a vintage to drink younger than usual too as it seems fast maturing

The colour is a full golden hue that suggests that the wine may be fully mature. The nose comes through after some time to match the colour. Pear is predominant on the nose with the typical Clare lemon and lime coming through more evidently in the aftertaste. Marmalade or orange peel is very much in evidence with sufficient acid to pucker the mouth. This is a fuller expression of Clare riesling that matched barramundi very well.

After 26yrs this wine is still as fresh. Color is still bright red with a tinge of amber at the edge. Nose is a bit muted but opened up slowly after some coaxing. Nice sweet berry taste and gd balance. The tannin has soften and the wine has fully integrated with the oak. A very good wine. Glad to have kept it for so long. This is a gd testament to the longevity of good Shiraz.

last bottle, and what a stunner! I've been fortunate to drink 2 cases of this wine over the past 6 years, and it has been an absolute pleasure every time.

The wine is still young to me, and continuing to evolve beautifully. It's deep and rich, with beautifully integrated fruit and oak giving exceptional depth of flavour.
It's still relatively dry, and with a lovely long finish.

I feel it will go on much longer for those who have some left!

Served by the glass. Just in case you like wines that smell like raw plums with chocolate and figs. Boring, excessively heavy on the palate, short and monotonous.

Servido por copas. Si te gustan vinos que en bruto huelen a ciruelas con chocolate e higos. Aburrido, excesivamente pesado al paladar, corto y monótono.

Leasingham was one of our favorites but unfortunately the multinational owners decided to carve up the business. Sad but such is life. So many great small independent producers out there.
