10/5/2011 - Holdfast wrote: 88 points(cask 868) Very intriguing. Very robust; caramel with figs with some real chewiness. Went very nicely with cheese; not a glass to sip on its own as the tannins are just too potent for that. But with the right food? Very pleasant indeed. Will see what the rest of the bottle does with a sweet dessert/fruit cake as I suspect that will complement just as well if not better. |

Dense and sugary, not cloying due to the lively acidity. Intense and raisined on the palate with dark chocolate, coffee and treacle. Good complexity and length. |

Sweet (but not overly so) on the palate with very nice acidity and a long finish. 16% alcohol is not noticable. Medium body. |

There is good acidity which balances the sweet fruit well. The oak card has been played here, buts it’s been done well; at least it seems so on this damp bleak English winter’s evening! |

It tasted like a rather light/faded port at first but as it opened out over an hour or so the nose, flavour and texture became distinctly of chocolate. Pleasant wine, medium rather than especially sweet and not especially oxidative. Still drinking well the second day (just re-corked the bottle) but all the complexity had gone. Best drunk in one sitting I think. Good enough and certainly interesting. |

Once opened, you can keep this wine in the refrigerator for up to six weeks without risk of deterioration. A very youthful 75 years old. The wine was made in a rancio style by leaving it in the sun in glass bonbonnes and then aging it in demi-muids of 600 liters for more than 60 years. Do you find this review helpful? 5/14/2004 - andrewstevenson.com wrote: 88 pointsA bright mahogany with a just-ruby core. Very viscous and oil like, reminiscent of a PX sherry. Tarte tatin nose - buttery, caramel and a certain doughiness with some surprisingly crisp fruit. Off-sweet on the attack. Rich, with some tannic structure. Most unusual. Very nice, light freshness cutting the rich sweet fruitiness. Very Good. |
