2011 Sine Qua Non The Moment

Santa Barbara County White Blend more

5/19/2015 - CManthei Likes this wine: 94 points

Stunning, deep golden hay color. Full of tropical fruits (mango, peach, pineapple), toasty oak, baking spices and white flowers that last on the palate for 60+ seconds. So full bodied, unctuous, and waxy. The blend is 55% Roussane, 19% Chardonnay, 19% petit Manseng and 7% Viognier. The Viognier really gives a great lifted floral note, plus ripe apricots. At 15.5% a.b.v, it's massive, but so well integrated and balanced! This will be a long-lived white wine.

Rich, lush and opulent fruit. Velvet mouthfeel, ripe red cherries, lozenge, crushed stone minerality. Old vines showing their stuff here -- a real panache. Alcohol shines through a bit, but well balanced in general.

Pop and pour. Clear deep ruby. Nose is full of supe-ripe, delicious blackberries, cassis, vanilla, baking spices, sweet coconut. The cab really shines here - syrah adds a great meaty, savory component. This wine is in a great place, "delicious" is the only word that seems apt

Ripe, sweet, boozy Ludens (cherry) lozenge. Just a bit of ripe plum with that baked, Christmas fruitcake quality. Actually not a great showing for this wine, expected a bit more. I tasted it at the vineyard and remembered it being more like Cabernet - dark fruits with refreshing acidity and ripe tannins. Instead it was a bit one-dimensional and lightly unbalanced with alcohol (it's 14.4% ABV)... Will hold on to the other bottle...

Already approaching its peak, this wine shows fading red fruits, tar, Asian spices and sort of an overly acidic soy sauce. There are some seconday dried mushroom qualities that are lovely, but was hoping it would be more fresh and vibrant... It's already tired.

Pale ruby red in the glass, this wine has spectacular density and concentration of color. Aromas of dried fruits, figs and forest floor leap from the glass. Cherry cola is pronounced on the palate, with just a bit of cinnamon spice. Acidity is a bit over the top, especially after a glass or two. Great wine, but the balance could be cleaner

Musty red fruits, mud, dried cherries and leather. This village wine is fading, but still had lots to give. Wonderful austerity combined with muddy (somewhat stinky) fruits. Probably only has a year left or so, I'd say..

Fragrant nose of honey, toasted nuts, baking spices, oak and lemon zest. On the attack, the texture is quite full-bodied and alive, it coats the palate and zaps you with lively acidity. Extremely fresh and vibrant. On the palate, there are white flowers, jasmine, bright citrus (lemon), and even more toasted brioche. A lovely wine, I wouldn't mind holding on to it a bit longer to see if a cleaner balance with acidity develops.

This wine was showing very well. The beautiful bouquet and palate are full of caramel, brioche, toasted nuts, clove and herbs, marked by viscous texture. Oily, heavy, and long-lasting on the palate. The effects of malolactic fermentation seem to be quite obvious (very buttery).. but I could be wrong. Great balance with acidity.

Tar, smokiness, leather and vibrant fruit are combined in this beautiful Bordeaux blend. The Cabernet Sauvignon really shines, but the cab Franc and petit Verdot really add a meaty structure that gives it a wonderful richness and austerity. Loved this bottle, hope to encounter more!

Stunning array of stewed red and black fruits, jammy smokiness, perfectly ripe. Palate is full, round, robust and silkly -- imagine all the words you can use to describe a well-integrated wine that coats the palate. Grenache at its best, in my opinion... but I like big wines like this.

Raisins, baked apples, marzipan, vanilla, plus a slight shellfish + salty minerality. Still has plenty of acidity and structure to keep on going, but I must say, this bottle has had perfect preservation in the cellars at Bollinger. Love the rum-raisin and sherry-like quality in these ages Champagnes...

Tasting from magnum presented at a Bollinger tasting. The preservation is amazing -- effervescence abounds and it is crisp and acidic. Beautiful golden colors. This vintage is starting to get that beautiful sherry-like austerity of quality aged Champagne. Love it

More acidic than the 2002, this Champagne offers plenty of pears and golden apples that go along with the typical autolytic breadcrumbs and yeast. Nice fresh fruit, and lasting on the palate. Even some apricots in there... a beautiful Champagne.

Balance is the hallmark of this wine. The tannins are perfectly integrated and it sings on the palate for 40+ seconds. Licorice, saddle leather, pepper and dark fruits are represented well, and the Viognier in the blend adds something special -- a round texture and mouthfeel with a punch of clove. This wine is drinking beautifully

Honeysuckle, clove, vanilla, baking spices on the nose, this wine continues to open with time in the glass. I might even consider a short decant. It massive, at 14.9%, it will stand up to any food you put it against. It seems to completely lack acidity, but I rather like massive white wines of this style from time to time. It's bold and masculine

Petrol, bay leaf and slight salinity make this wine a fun aperitif. Low ABV (9%) means it goes well with food and small snacks. Complex, with a slightly thin texture, it has nice hints of orange marmalade and clove. Nice stuff!

Another stunning blanc from Smith Haut Lafitte. Pale, crisp yellow in the glass... the color of straw. On the palate it's full of toasted nuts, almonds, brioche, buttered croissants and white flowers. Just so elegant and lovely. Some oak is there, but it's not overwhelming, just adds a layer of complexity. I love these guys.
