2010 Claudine Petitjean Montrachet

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay more

Drunk at LQV HK. An ethereal Montrachet, in the lighter Puligny style. The smallest producer with only 5 ares, the wine is made by Lamy Pillot. An extremely pretty nose of white flowers, citrus and chalk. The wine was medium weight for a Montrachet but had enormous length. Worth seeking out

Another astonishing bottle. Even at 98 points, Meadows, I think, is conservative ! Simply put, one of the 2 or 3 most breathtaking White Burgundies I've ever had

Very tropical, with an almost Jurancon-like tang to it. I would never guess this as a Chablis, however it is an intriguing glass of wine, but not something I'd return to quickly

I'd be surprised if White Burgundy can get better than this. For me, this ranks alongside 1982 Ramonet Montrachet and 1996 Coche CC as the great WB I've drunk. The precision is laser like, I can't remember drinking a more mineral laden wine. Each time I revisited the glass over the evening it seemed to add another dimension. Extraordinarily expensive but worth every penny !

2010 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos des Carmes Monopole

Chenin Blanc more

12/9/2014 - sjwshiraz Likes this wine: NR

An extraordinary wine. Ever since I was served Clos Rougeard's Breze cuvee earlier this year, I've been on the look out for similar wines. This comes from a Clos on the hill of Breze, and is the top cuvee made by Guiberteau. The wine shows the same intense grip and minerality of a Coche Corton or a Ramonet Chevalier, married to an ever so slightly tropical mélange of white fruits and blossoms. The first hint that this isn't a great White Burgundy, is a slight hint of pineapple and that sweet/ sour interplay that for me flags it to be a Chenin. As the wine opened in the glass, it showed more honey and beeswax, but not the butteriness of a great Chardonnay.

A great discovery for me, sadly very little seems top be available as they only make 2,000 or so bottles. The wine was recommended by the manager at a great new wine bar in Hong Kong called Le Quinze Vins.
