I don't know if this is indicative of Mt. Veeder style, but the wine was light to medium in both color and palate. On the palate, this wine did not disappoint - flowers, strawberry, cherry, smoke, tobacco. On the nose...balance - fruit and all those wonderful smokey aromas given by the oak. Very well balanced with lighter tannins. This could stay in the bottle much longer but was good now. I don't feel that the price to quality ratio justified it's high price and I expected a little more from such an expensive producer. We have too many optioins to pay $90+ for a wine that is very good, but don't make your eyes roll back in your head. |

One year ago I had opened a bottle to find a peppery, unbalanced and rather monotonous effort. Tonight I open it to find quintessential bordeaux nose full of earth, wisdom, musty old world goodness that finishes strong with balanced cherry fruit, silky tannins and tantalizing pepper than finishes with you wishing you were sitting in the hollow of a tree listeing to the rain come down. |

2/19/2007 - kevin.haythe wrote: 82 pointsThis wine comes in on the low end of good. A fruit forward effort that interestingly balances the Malbec and Cab. I think the fruit in the Malbec overpowers the Cab. No earthy complexity, this wine is all fruit. |

There are times in one's life where you feel that you opened the bottle on the exact evening it was meant to be consumed. If you have any of the 2002 I recommend you crack one open today and expereince what I mean. Fruity, oaky, decadent nose, soft tannins and smooth and silky finish. Explodes with black cherry and raspberry. Give it a whirl!! |

Its musty nose over powered any fruits and their seemed to have a small hint of carbonation. Weird huh? However, after allowing this wine some time and then trying it again the next day, I was pleasantly surprised but what I found. A truly earthy pinot that grabs your attention through its balance. No over the top fruits, but plenty present to balance a meaty earth taste that makes you want to wander the forests of the pacific northwest barefoot and happy. I do think that it's a little expensive for the experience. |

It has a nice oaky nose followed by a full mouth loaded with black cherry, valnilla and finishes lightly with soft tannins and silky mouth feel. |

6/29/2006 - kevin.haythe wrote: 91 pointsThis was the first Monastrell that I have tried. It's bold, spicy flavor and complexity of fruit was a surprise for it's medium body. I drank this wine with an aged sirloin and wild salmon (surf and turf - salmon cooked with butter, lemon and thyme). The wine was well paired with both and didn't even overwhelm the salmon as I thought it would. The balance and soft tannins make this 2004 ready to drink now. I will seek out Monastrell in the future and spread the word of its character and strength. |

The tannins are light and this wine is ready to be enjoyed. You can cellar for a couple more years, but I wouldn't wait much longer. |

4/9/2006 - kevin.haythe wrote: 82 pointsOpen on a beautiful evening in Boulder. 75 degrees and sunny. You have to wonder how much our moods affect our tasting notes. This wine is dark ruby, but not black. It has a nose that is a nice blend of black cherry, chocolate, creme, and leather. However, there is a imbalance to this wine that you don't normally experience in the supertuscan variety. The beautiful nose on this wine sets you up for a disappointing finish. The alcohol over powers the fruit and the there is still a hotness in the mouth that would suggest more time in the bottle for the tannins to settle. It may balance over time, but still, it won't be a wine of superior quality. It's not of the fruit bomb style that you might expect from this warm climate. But hell, it doesn't suck, I've opened it, and I'm going to drink it. |

3/25/2006 - kevin.haythe wrote: 85 pointsPowerful black currant fruit and vanilla oakiness on the nose. Rich hue that prgressively lightens up on the edge. Strong/Medium tannins and new world, fruit forward boldness. A little imbalanced by the fruit, but a very pleasant wine. At this point I will hold on to my other bottles for awhile. Give the wine another 3-6 years before even considering opening it. It's still very young, but has the potential to balance better when the tannins are little less aggressive. This will never be an outstanding wine, but it's very good. |

2/26/2006 - kevin.haythe wrote: 89 pointsTrue Bordeaux style with nice fruits that weren't noticeable on the nose. This wine opened up and needs about 1-2 hours to open up. Although this is old world style, I did find the fruits - though not as rich as most hot climate and new world wines - well balanced. I didn't find the tannins particularly strong and suspect that this wine won't age well past another 5-6 years. |

2/25/2006 - kevin.haythe wrote: 95 pointsThis was an amazing Syrah. A nose of toasted almonds and vanilla. You could taste blackberry, currant, vanilla, spice. Its deep, rich, purple color was a delight to examine and enjoy. The tannins were very subdued and the glycerin felt great in the mouth. I wish I had more than one bottle. This wine is ready to drink. |
