  • 2020 Mark Ryan Cabernet Sauvignon Dead Horse

I'll start by saying that Goodvitis.com's notes from September, 2023 are brilliant in their accuracy... my notes are similar but pale in comparison. Anyway... Decanted for 90 minutes. The nose is so full and brooding (in a good way) with cherry/blackberry, wet rock, leather, a most-enjoyable pipe tobacco (reminds me of my Dad), and a nice mineral/glycerin combo. The palate is saturated with the same, along with a pleasant dark chocolate and light sage combination. Cigar box also detected. Finish goes on and on. Big, thick wine but so balanced... no rough edges and a perfect steak wine. Superb now, with a good decant, and in another few years I'm guessing this gem will rack up an additional 2+ points. Highly recommended.

The notes by SID_LOVES_WINE are spot on (definitely read those), and I have little to add to them. A really big and somewhat "in your face" wine, no doubt, but the balance is impeccable. Not overdone, over-the-top, or overtly extracted like one sees with the Caymus bottlings (yuck). It's just flat-out delicious. Paired with a bone-in ribeye. Bingo.

  • 2017 Force Majeure Syrah Force Majeure Vineyard Red Mountain

Hard to believe I was able to find another bottle of this beauty from this vintage. First enjoyed about 3 years ago, and in my tasting notes at the time I believe I said something to the effect of "it will be interesting to revisit this in 3+ years." Well, after nearly 3 years' time, this certainly did not disappoint. While I am certainly no expert on Syrah, I can honestly say that this wine--especially after a couple more years of bottle aging--is even better than I could imagine. It remains in a virtual tie with the first vintage of the K Vintners Royal City--as the greatest Syrah I've ever had. I just don't have the skills to detail all the wonderful smells and tastes of this phenomenal wine. However, what I said in my original tasting note is 100% appropriate here: this is sublime.
