The wine is still reaching towards complexity but it has such lovely balance and harmony to its nose and mouthfeel. Those that aren't fond of CDP blanc may find the mouthcoating waxiness a bit smothering, but paired with caviar and seafood salad, there was such a lovely harmony to the elemnts. Really brought out the best in the wine. |

2000 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape BlancWhite Rhone Blend more |
5/5/2011 - Faryan wrote: 89 pointsThe 3 Cs of the Northern Rhone: The Nerthe was waxy and viscous, what one would expect from aged cdp. Nice notes of marcona almonds and waxy honeycomb (non-sweet). There is some quince and lychee fruit as well. Paired very well with the cheeses, duck terrine and olives at the deck. |

2/12/2011 - Faryan wrote: 91 pointsThis was quite lovely stuff. Opened at first with a great floral nose of hoenycomb, lavender and provencal flowers. At first, it was a bit limp on the palate but with more time in the glass, gained a better backbone of acidity and a mroe crisp finish. I think it is the type of white that needs time to gain depth, rather than the type that needs time to shed fat/angularity. Should be interesting to watch it progress, but its delicate floral aspect was quite enjoyable. |

It has classic notes of Marsanne with oily hazelnut and peach with supple feel to the nose. The wine is tight as a drum, with a backbone of acidity but with also what some characterized as an offputting hairspray finish of astringency. I find this a common characteristic of young N Rhone blancs to my palate; it is almost like an unwound blend of minerality and hazy smoke that needs time to decouple. This wine needs so much more time to really extract the pleasure which warrants the price tag. Always a gamble with these. |

It had a bit more rounded and polished mouthfeel and a floral lift, albeit muted. |

On first pour, I found this wine a bit offputting as it had an angular and astringent offputting metallic aroma. It was so sharp that I almost felt the wine damaged. With some time in the glass, it wore off and some notes of melon and lemongrass emerged but it never fleshed out nor did it have the taut focus of a more zippy wine. It felt confused to me. Harry pointed out that these wines take extensive time to express themselves. I hope so... |

They are often side projects of producers but never executed with conviction or real motivation towards excellence. I tend to assume the same belief with Clos des Papes blancs and the 06 was nothing special, so to speak. The wine was visibly darker than the 07 and a bit better than my last encounter with it. Somewhat odd and astringent notes on the nose which resolve with some time. Lots of melonball and ginger but again the wine is a house out of order. I wasn't exactly impressed with the wine at an earlier dinner this year and I thought this showing was just as underwhelming. |

Darryl also had the "bad" bottle with me and has had the wine on a separate instance with great results, so perhaps there is a consistency issue with these wines in such adolescence. More open and floral on the nose with that characteristic melon and pear. The mouthfeel has more plush exoticism but again, at the pricepoint there are far better options being presented from the Loire, Chablis, Alsace, Germany and Austria. |

The outlier from the Southern Rhone, brash and brazen in its youth. Far less advanced and visibly so. Straw, pale yellow with hints of green, the wine is far more eccentric in its primacy. Significant acidic lift falls behind citric and melon notes on the nose, with slate minerality. The wine rounds with time in the glass and is a real pleasure to quaff. Is it worth the going rate? Like many CDP Blanc, I’m not quite sure nowadays. Long gone are those 20-30 dollar bottles… |

As it came to temperature and opened up, buttery viscous mouthfeel began to develop to counteract the underlying minerality. I think white CDP really offers great value for the price and this is a prime example. |

The texture of the palate is not very hefty but it seems poised to grow with age. The finish is tart and linear. A very nice white with upside. |
