NOSE: high-toned and dark-fruited; a touch dusty; the high-toned feature seems to be a product of bottle ageing.

BODY: dark garnet color of great depth, with slight bricking at the edges; {forgot to note weight}

TASTE: smooth; tannins resolved; medium to medium+ acidity; dark-fruited; nicely aged, but could still go longer; alc. comes across as being a bit spiky; gut impression score: high 80s.

Big and tight on first opening, earthy, herbal, and black fruited. Popped in the decanter ahead of dinner. Some ripe blueberries, boysenberry and plums. Baking spices, leather and liquorice. Slightly powdery medium (+) tannins, with an incredibly amount of acid that give it plenty of verve. I think Larry put it best in the back label of the wine: "certainly approachable now. That said, its best days probably lay ahead."

ABV: 14.5%
Closure: Stelvin
Decant: 4h
Stem: Gabriel Glas StandArt
Assemblage: 100% PS from La Pressa Vineyard. Destemmed and aged 34 months in older French oak. 3 barrels produced

So good on night 1. Bright bramble, and even raspberry fruit. Plenty of density to remind you it's a PS, along with some of the funk I loved from an earlier vintage. Plenty of acidity. Just a great rendition of PS.

Night 2 this was even better. The fruit was more clear as were the complexities from the funk.

My brother blinded this on me.
Very dark, saturated color that ruled out Pinot, Grenache, and many other old-world grape varieties. Nose was pretty nondescript and didn't give me any clue. Started out with really nice, silky mouthfeel. There was not as much depth or concentration as one would expect from the color and it was medium-bodied at best. Seemed a little flat and lacking a touch of acidity. At this point, I was pretty sure this was new world, but what grape variety?
Based on the flavor profile, I ruled out Cabernet and Syrah. Already ruled out Grenache and Pinot based on color. Mourvedre? No. Other Bordeaux varietal? Didn't taste Bordeaux-like at all. Something in my head said Barbera, so that's what I went with, 2015 Sierra Foothills Barbera. (My brother is from Sacramento and has blinded me on Sierra Foothills wines before, plus the acidity profile seemed to fit).
On the reveal, I was a little surprised because there was not much tannin. I don't drink much PS at all, in fact, I think the last time I had any PS was this same wine, in 2013!

Drank this bottle at a Superbowl party with non-geeks. Some tannins on pop n pour. Dark color. Some spice. Smooth. This was opening up at 120 minutes, and tannins remained. This suggest that this can be held. An enjoyable wine. I purchased this at the tasting room with Larry when it was first opened. Drink or hold. I enjoyed this wine with a steak.

I usually don’t go in for P.S. but Larry has made an eminently drinkable one that doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Now the REALLY interesting thing to me about this wine was how it showed across the entire weekend. In the tasting room Larry said this could be laid down for a few years and I joked it probably would not last that long with me. Well, turns out we opened it THAT night as we have a couple big Petite Sirah fans in our group. It was powerful layers of dark fruit, blueberry, blackberry, some licorice and softer tannins than I expected from a PnP Petite Sirah — but that wasn’t what surprised me. You see, Saturday we had a 2014 Myriad Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2011 Roccolo Grassi Amarone (at a whopping 16.5% alcohol plus whatever the leeway ‘overage’ is on that)… but because we only finished half a botlle of each, we decided to to a side-by-side competition on Sunday. For fun, I put the Myriad against the Amarone and Larry’s Petite Sirah (opened Friday). For perspective, that’s a $150 bottle, a $100 bottle and a $50 bottle (rough prices for each). Well, 3/4 of us preferred the Tercero Petite Sirah to those other two. While all three wines were still big, the Tercero was simply more drinkable and balanced. It was a fun experiment, with different varietals but similarly big wines. Clearly Larry makes great wine at a great value.

I purchased this at the tasting room almost 5 years to the day, just when Larry opened it. This is a twist off. On pop 'n pour, it was really dark, with some tannins. It was tasty! After 2 hours, the tannins were fading, but they were still there when I went for a re-taste on day 2. The body of the wine is a cross between a pinot noir and a cab. There's no rush to drink this. I'll open my last bottle in 2018 - 2019. Good QPR.

PnP: damn this is tasty. Big bramble fruit both on the nose and palate. Earth, leather, blueberries, and a hint of smoke as well. Tannins are nicely managed - starting out present but not overwhelming. I expect them to pick up with some air. Black pepper is the other prominent flavour, especially on the finish. Initial impression is that this is delicious. The funk and smoke made it a great pairing with non-sauced smoked ribs.

Day 3 - re-capped and on the counter. It's oxidized a touch, but otherwise smoothed out very nicely. Tannins are more rounded and the finish is nice and funky. Reminds me a bit of Clark's more reductive winemaking style in a way.

This showed a very cured meat aroma, interesting for a PS. Blueberries, red fruit, and and firm acid backbone. Needless to say, tannins are still angular. Add a piece of chocolate cake and you're in the money.

Brought to Thanksgiving at home and was generally a hit, even with some palattes that tend to skew more to the basic sweet wines which surprised me. It's relatively full-bodies, good sour fruit, not quite as peppery as a typically associate a Petite Sirah. Interesting wine.
