1996 Château Cos d'EstournelSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/10/2024 - Lype Likes this wine: NRIn a recent Cos vertical tasting comprising various vintages between 1985-2000 the top three wines stood out clearly. Surprisingly to me, the 1996 got Bronze and felt maybe even a bit of a let down (age-wise) between the accessible and ripe but classy 1990 and the unbelievably beautifully structured, still developing, 2000. Where does the 1996 go as a standalone item? To put it short, this a stairway to heaven. What we have got here is classic Left Bank profile, cassis, pencils shavings, smoke, fresh plums and earth. Still present tannins and wood gradually melting into the mix. The acidity as good as it gets - a defining feature of any excellent 1996 Left Banker, something that really ties the package together. Royal and excellent finish. This is breathtakingly good and will get even better with time. Post scriptum: the indie chart winners of the vertical probably were the unsung hero 1985, which has always drank well and the 1988, which had the lure of austere but tempting Bdx vintages. |

5/8/2024 - englishman's claret wrote: NRAs soon as the cork is pulled, the '20 Cos shows a reticent but characterful nose of boysenberry, pomegranate, and plum with a slightly spicy edge, gaining and astonishing aromatic generosity, voluptuous bordering on corpulent with an hour of air yet never becoming top-heavy. Very cool and intense in the 2020 way, dry extract and plenty of tannin but with the acid to match. By 12 hours, the pomegranate coming tot he fore with an exotic spice element and shaved pencil. Finishing well. Muscled and fat simultaneously, like a sumo wrestler. 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 13.5% ABV on the bottle. |

5/4/2024 - Jeff Leve wrote: 95 pointsCos d'Estournel Blanc - Bordeaux - Pomelo, lemongrass, flowers, white peach, and crisp, green apples form the bouquet. The palate is zesty, fresh, and spicy, with a flattering crispness to the fruits, paired with a touch of honeysuckle that shines in the endnotes of the finish. This is the first vintage to include the new blocks, bringing the vineyard to 10 hectares of white wine grape varietals. The wine blends 70% Sauvignon Blanc, and 30% Semillon. Drink from 2024-2032. 95 Pts. |

5/4/2024 - Jeff Leve wrote: 97 pointsIt takes some coaxing to find the red, purple, and white floral bouquet, but it comes with swirling, along with Asian spice, smoke, tobacco, and licorice. But, it is the palate that offers thrills with its silky, fresh, opulent textures. There is a vivid quality to the fruit, coupled with a relaxed character, finishing with black, red, and blue fruits complicated by Indian spices. It reminds me of a modern version of the 1990, with selection. The wine was made from blending 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV, 3.75 pH. The harvest took place September 12 to September 29. This is the first vintage, since 2008 the estate green harvested. The Grand Vin was produced from 53% of the harvest. The wine is going to be approachable early in its life, yet it has the ability to age for decades. Drink from 2029-2060. 96-98 Pts. |

5/4/2024 - Édifice wrote: 97 pointsFantastic wine with a wonderful bouquet, dark, ripe berries, spices and crushed stones, flowers. Very silky palate, spicy, dark fruited, a bit of chocolate, yet some freshness, leading to long finish with very fine tannins. Ready to drink with a bit of decant. For sure a more exotic, modern wine, but by no means overdone. |

5/2/2024 - Philip67 Likes this wine: 95 pointsGorgeous open palate, allowing full enjoyment of the wine's many charms. Still plenty of red fruit, with hints of tar behind, along with hedgerow and sweet spices. There are also mushroom notes, along with black olive paste, leather and quite prominent oak notes. Long and complex. It is time to drink this. Right now it is a complete wine but I suspect it will go down hill from here. |

Wonderful smoky nose, notes of menthol, eucalyptus, tobacco, and dark forest floor fruits. Perfectly in balance, the wine was velvet smooth with resolved tannins. Favour this to 2003 Montrose right now. I don’t think this is going to get much better than where it is now. Very impressive wine. 95pts |

4/30/2024 - tcarter Likes this wine: 92 pointsSlightly depressed wine-soaked cork with some mold on top. Wine seemed to be in pretty good shape though. But definitely felt past its prime. Thin with little tannins left. Dusty and dry with some hints of soy and not much fruit left. I have one more and I'll probably drink soon as this is past its drinking window I fear. |

There is a wall of fine tannin here that is still breaking down. No doubt, a classic wine that is likely to continue to improve. |

The cork was sound and there was a modest amount of sediment. The wine displayed a very good balance of mature, rich fruit with structure. The wine is in a great place now and i wish i had more. It was a pleasure to drink with a nice meal. |

4/26/2024 - dream Likes this wine: 94 pointsBob was right, this should’ve been served in the first flight with the Pichon Lalande and Ducru above as it was simply over-shadowed by the power of the '96 LLC and Haut Brion drunk alongside. That being said, I still thought it was a beautiful wine that really showed the terroir of St. Estephe with flavors of earthy dark fruits, Asian spices and road tar. A beautiful wine that needs drinking now. 94 |

4/24/2024 - zimmy07 Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis is on point! Popped cork and the perfume from the bottle was instant. violets poped on the nose. On the palate cedar, pencil shaving, gritty tannin and blue fruits. In perfect balance. I am not sure this will get better, it will hold for aonther 10+ years easy, but not sure it will improve. This was so damn good!!!! 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
