2022 Höpler Pannonica

Burgenland Rosé Blend more

A Rose from Austria. Cleanish pink leaning orange in color. Sharp upfront fruit and acid entry that is really quite raw. Almost a cross between an orange wine a rose, it shows a bit nutty on the roof of the mouth. Smooths out with air in the glass. Then it shows some sneaky layered complexity with minerals and earth. And then some emerging sharp raspberry and cherry.

Not sure what to make of this wine. If this is the intended style or if this was just an off bottle, but it was not enjoyable at all. Light red in color, but very turbid and hazy, strong secondary bottle fermentation and very fizzy on the palate, nice reductive strawberry fruit but agressive volatile acidity. Tastes like a 3 Euro "Sturm" wine. For my palate and all the other 6 tasters this was a flawed bottle and it went down the sink. This could however be the house style? - no rating/flawed or just not my style

Fuller body than I really expected. Honey with a slightly bitter undertone. Something earthy lingers after a sip, more the herbs of a stew than bright and fresh. Just right for a spring day that was less warm than expected

Aearated for about 2 hours, served in a Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux Glass.
Dark, opapque ruby colour.

Nose: Dark, brooding cherry, dried cranberry and blueberry at first, notes of tart plum afterwards. Following that notes of dried herbs, crushed stones, smoke and black pepper arise. Towards the end, hints of citrus zest, menthol, cured meat and oak arise.

Palate: Dark cherries, plums and dried cranberries come through, notes of savoury herbs and pepper soon after. Very fresh acidity, slight salinity and tannic grip. On the finish, the wine shows dried cranberries, cracked pepper, savoury herbs and subdued hints oak.

Great Blaufränkisch, showing well its varietal characteristics (Dark fruit, pepper, zest) and the influence of the Leithaberg terroir (minerality, salinity).

Great to be back to newest vintage of probably finest Blaufrankisch there is. Vines of 85-110 years of age, 24 months in large used barrels, no fining, no filtration, no additives, just pinch of sulphites. Deep ruby. Intense and rich aroma of blueberries, roasted herbs, blackberries, earth, bread, plum marmalade. Full body, explosive and powerful yet at same time tight and restrained, begs for 4-6 years to start unfurling its true potential. All in all its exceptional with great structure and firm tannins.

Pleasure to return to new vintage of this beautiful Blaufrankisch. New project of Roland Velich, first vintage was just 2019. Single varietal of Blaufränkisch comes from four vineyards planted between 1921-1981. Aged for 2 years in large and old barrels. Deep ruby. Intense aroma of herbs, violets, blueberries, cherries, clove, licorice, hints of tomato leaf. Medium+ body, juicy & quite tight, bursting with youth, but on other hand elegant & delicate, showing deep multilayered flavours and refined medium tannins.

An entry wine from a Blaufrankisch master Roland Velich. Same philosophy even for such level - lots of manual labour, low intervention, spontaneous fermentation, aging for 12 months in large used oak barrels. Medium+ ruby colour. Medium intensity aroma of black cherries, blackberries, cassis, herbs, hints of smoke and coffee. Medium body, fresh and juicy, black fruit and herbal flavours with smoky notes, spicy medium tannins.

I normally tend more towards Pinot-leaning style of blaufranksich, not minding the Syrah predominant ones if elegantly done. This wine started out with a fun, young fruit taste at cellar temp but later warmed up to feel like a 2018 dark skinned heavier fruit wine. Plum, wood, cassis, and sous bois, with the light pepper and slightly skank notes.
