It’s so light that it’s closer to a rose or something. This is a brunch cab and certainly has its market. That market is just not me.

2022 Bedrock Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

My first Bedrock Cabernet. Love their zins and blends. PnP. Opens with floral, cassis, plum, cocoa, cedar, spice and mint aromas. On the palate this is light to medium body. Blue and black fruits, cocoa, spices, plum flavors. Next to no tannin noted and a very short finish. Not a bad wine, but not at the level I was expecting. 2 more bottles, so maybe it will put on weight in the next few years.

Double decanted on day one. Finished day two. Clear improvement on day two. Very nice flower nose with dark fruits. Dark fruits follow on the pallet. Blue and stone fruit on the pallet with spice box at the end. Finish lingers.

1984 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

more

4/26/2024 - Montesquieu Likes this wine: NR

I collect Dunn HM from the 1980s and early 1990s. It and Ridge Monte Bello, with 20+ years age, are my favorite American reds by far. This 1984 Dunn HM, with pristine wax cap and cork, was the first "past its peak, but still good" Dunn HM I've ever had. My many other Dunn HM's from 1985-1988 have shown extraordinary mushroom soup funk and glory - what I'd consider peak tertiary window. This 1984 was maybe 5 years past its tertiary peak. Some flavors of bandaid (bad), mint (surprised), tart cranberry, and funk mixed with still-solid dried fruit. For a 40 year old wine, it is a standout success for California, though below the other 1980s Dunns I've had. Would rate an 88 today. I'm not entering a score because its ratings past-prime shouldn't discount its ratings in peak.

Similar notes as previous tastings. Deep purple/red color. Lots of black fruits in the nose and flavor. Blackberries, black currants, and black cherries in the nose with licorice and tobacco and hints of chocolate and leather. Black cherries, blackberries, black currants, blueberries and plums in the flavor. Well balanced, medium to full bodied, nice acidity, complex, medium to long silky finish. An elegant wine drinking very well right now and for several years to come.

2014 Jones Family Cabernet Sauvignon The Sisters

93 that is beginning to lean into 94. This 14 shows nice evolution but still needs 2-3 years before it hits the beginnings of its full stride.

This 2014 “The Sisters” is rich, lush & ruby fruits of; blackberries, dark plum that stretches into pudding, dark cherries, black raspberries, some boysenberries. Dark chocolate cake with buttercream frosting, mocha powder notes, melted, salted caramel, mid berry cola, light; clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanillin, dark, rich, sweet earth with dry leaves, some dry herbs, dark spice w/ some palate heat, limestone powdered, dry stone, soft leather & slightly dryish tobacco, sandalwood to barrel shavings, hints of lead pencil, touch of dry stems, fresh & slightly withering flowers that are; dark, red with lavender framed in liquid violets, excellent round acidity and a very well balanced, mid structured & tensioned finish that is elegantly polished and lasts a little more than a minute.

Paired with an Allen Brother’s Filet Mignon. A good, well aged Napa Cabernet works well with a less/near no fat cut of meat.

4/26/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 88 points

Much better than my last bottle about two years ago. Now there’s some fruit, more earthy characteristics, some soft but very present tannins and strong vanilla notes, probably from oak. The high alcohol (14.5) is definitely noticeable, but somehow mostly works. This is now in a much better place than it was a couple of years ago, so maybe it just needed more time to come together?

Well made and a bit much in some aspects, but the finish sails on. Blackberries, cassis, currants and crushed rock. Full with body. If you enjoy ripe, bigger Napa, you will love this. Enjoyable and not meek, with obvious dimension. Velvety tannins. Drink now - 2033.

Served blind. Brought by HMC to our event this night. 3 hour decant.

Classic Napa Cab nose. Showing lots of age in the glass, a light to medium garnet. Looks like it could be an '01 or '03 so no way of knowing how this one was stored all these years as HMC got it at auction a few months ago.

Cedar and red currant on the nose. Palate is fully resolved. This one is drinking older than other bottles I have had in the past year. Smooth, regal and red fruited. It's beautiful, but weakens a bit later in the evening with too much airtime. Just goes to show you how storing bottles can make a big difference in how they drink down the road.....

Blind. My first wine brought to tonight's event and my first bottle ever of this maker. Also my first Luc Morlet wine, ever.

Decanted 45 min then slow ox'd over 1-3 hours. Initially 94-95? A big, rich dark fruited Cabernet! Tons of smooth blackberry fruit that just kept getting better and better as the night wore on. If you have these, give them plenty of air right now. Nobody thought this was a '13. It's simply too dark, too rich and drinking too young for a '13 at this point in time. 96 by the end......

Benefitted from a 90 minute decant, 60 F. Rich sweet blackberry fruit on the nose with smokey vanilla and anise notes. Low acidity, no noticeable heat, oak needs some more time to integrate. Pleasant tannins with just a touch of velvety grip. Big, sweet black fruits on the palate, blueberry, dried oak. Drying finish of medium length. I will try to hold off for 2 years before I open my next bottle.
