I know I shouldn’t be opening this too young, but it was calling out to me. Maroon with dark crimson hues. Rich and decadent. Rich berry fruits, plums, vanillin on the nose. The palate has sticky plums and blackberry plus some marzipan on the finish. Lovely wine and I look forward to see how the other bottles develop.

Initially closed but by second day had blossomed- On the nose there is fresh cucumber, raspberries and subtle hints of iron? Palate is packed full of jammy berry fruits, and like all other vintages- beautifully textured. Silky smooth. Long pleasant finish. Utterly enjoyable.

2016 Kalleske Shiraz Greenock

Barossa Valley more

7/13/2019 - Dom K Likes this wine: 96 points

This wine was quite a revelation for me- I haven’t heard of this vineyard before but picked this up at the local cellar purely because of the Greenock location on its label. Wow- a fleshy fruit forward wine of sweet plums, sticky raspberries and sweet vanilla. I would actually categorise this as “elegant” for Barossa standards. Thoroughly approachable and enjoyable. Sweet fruit pastilles with toffee liqueur on the finish. Much better valued then some of its Greenock Creek neighbours. I’m stocking up on this one.

Enjoying this at their cellar door Restaurant. Plums, red berry, white pepper with hints of mocha. The touch of viognier adds suppleness to this powerhouse wine. Enjoyable now.

Beginning to take on a more vibrant yellow color. On the nose there is melons, ripe peaches, and butter. Palate is creamy butter with fruit on the back. Recommend having this slightly above room temperature. Thoroughly drinkable now.

Enjoying this at the Lindeman’s Restaurant Baume. Jooby fruits, sticky blue and blackberries. Fruit forward with hints of marzipan in the background. Touch of spice on the finish. A couple of years has made all the difference.

2003 Penfolds Shiraz Magill Estate

6/3/2019 - Dom K Likes this wine: 95 points

Cork broke when opening- evidence that I had sub-optimal storing conditions over the years. After a quick decant (mainly to get rid of the cork fragments) the wine was singing beautifully. Perfume of violets, red liquorice, and plums. Additional raspberries on the palate. Soft silky wine with surprisingly still grippy tannins. Great drinking now but has enough grip to last a few more years.

Still youthful. Medium bodied- cherry liqueur and raspberries. Tannins have softened over the years but still lots of life ahead of it. Was expecting more complexity to be honest- a linear wine with no peaks or troughs.

On the nose there is Tuscan earth, old leather, black cherries, and sweet dates. I could just breathe this in all day reminiscing of my Montepulciano visits. Silky smooth on the palate, with white pepper on the finish. Very drinkable- approachable now with lots of life ahead of it.

Beautiful bouquet of raspberries, black cherries, and liqueur. There is an earthy leather aroma which makes this interesting. This is a rich, robust, silky smooth hedonistic wine drinking well now (I had the exact same vintage a year ago and was nowhere near ready then). A year of accelerated storage (non-wine fridge) has made all the difference.

2014 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press

Barossa Valley more

12/27/2018 - Dom K Likes this wine: 98 points

This wine still intrigues me everytime. Who would have thought your usual powerhouse Barossa Shiraz can be as delicate and elegant as a burgundy. This reminds me of a Pommard (yes- a Pinot Noir!). Dry, musky, mushrooms, aged vines, earth and spice with small red berries and dried cherries at the fore. Perfect accompliment to Peking Duck and BBQ cumin lamb over the Christmas break.

I was lucky enough to secure 2 cases of this in allocation. Way too young I know but I always like to drink one (to test if delivered OK) before locking the rest in long term storage. This only really came alive on the 3rd day (as expected for a wine this young that’s built to age). 3rd day: Rich dark berries, black cherries, uplifting thyme, with white pepper finish. Silky smooth with lovely puckering tannins. See the rest of you in 15 years! Something to look forward to.

Medium bodied, more savoury than sweet, lighter than expected. Cola, mandarin peel, cloves, unripened berries, and some pleasant musky aromas. Polar opposite from their Pinnacle label- this one being more subtle. Silky smooth and lovely fine tannins. Not my usual go-to style of wine but will be interesting to see how this evolves.

What a beautiful wine from Chile. Still bright and youthful- blueberries and plums with white pepper and spice. Aged well with softened tannins but still plenty of life ahead of it. Paired with cheese or century eggs brings out smooth vanilla and a fuller mid palate.

I have finally found my 100 point whisky. An intellectual whisky that challenges- it’s as if I’m tasting a totally different whisky with each sip. Nose: initial multi-fruit attack with yellow honey and geranium. Evolves shortly into a heavier nose of oil, wood, leather, and raisins pulling me into the glass. Loads of depth here. Rich sticky fruit and meadow flowers appear from time to time. Palate: confirms the nose, plus a deep satisfying spicy finish to tingle the lips and warm the chest. Incredibly well balanced in every way. I personally would not share this with friends. This is one for self-meditation and philosophy.

Scent of fresh mulberries, cucumber, juniper and pine. Smooth, velvety rich palate of mulberries, blueberries, with white pepper spice on the finish. Fine tannins leaves your tongue tingling for more. A Heathcote cabernet blend- up there with the best of Aussie cabernets. Can't wait to see how this develops over time- already drinking excellently young but needs decanting to smooth out the edges.
