2018 Domaine Gauby Côtes Catalanes Les Calcinaires

Red Blend more

4/7/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This is a blend from the south of France with 50% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache and 10% Carignan. It was aged for 8 to 10 months, 20% in barrels and 80% in vats. The first day is a disappointment because we are confronted with an imposing and very persistent reduction despite a generous and energetic decanting. Anyway, we drank it during Sunday lunch but without much pleasure. The second half of the bottle was tasted again the next day at noon: this time it is much, much better. Very beautiful nose, of great purity, with aromas of sweet red fruits, scents of abundantly flowery Mediterranean scrubland, a little leather as well as very beautiful sweet spices. The weight in the mouth is rather light. The tannins are barely perceptible. The palate delivers loads of stone fruits, a fine herbaceous bitterness and some mineral tones. It finishes quite long on pepper and fresh tobacco. Very good and friendly but what a pity we had to be so patient after uncorking.

2020 Jean Foillard Fleurie

Gamay more

3/10/2024 - FamousWine wrote: NR

I'm a huge fan of ‘Morgon Côte du Py’ by Jean Foillard. Discovering his Fleurie therefore seemed obvious to me. Yet it was a mixed tasting experience. I decanted it for 30 minutes and it was served slightly cool. It's beautifully fresh, the material is silky and superbly infused but the wine terribly lacks complexity and relief. Almost flat electrocardiogram. Wine too young, closing phase, bottle problem or unforgivable mistake about the ventilation time? I remain perplex… If anyone wants to send me another one for free, I'm interested but not sure to buy this cuvée again. Bring me back a ‘Côte du Py’ please!

2013 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca

Nebbiolo more

3/3/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

The bottle was uncorked 1 hour before the dinner and the wine was poured to enhance succulent duck puddings cooked by Madame. Medium(+) intensity fragrances of cherries, rose petals, tangerine peel, light tobacco and a bit of wood burst out of the glass. A tiny hint of alcoholic heat can also be detected. The palate is much more impressive. That's irresistibly delicious! Masculine and almost austere, it reveals plenty of firm textured tannins -wow!. They provide a seriously-grippy mouthfeel. A dark-fleshed fruity sap underpinned by a zesty, bright acidity mingles with flavors of mushrooms, blood orange, licorice and leather. It has a very good length, evoking earth, cooked tomato and balsamic aromas towards the finish. It's already tempting but I'm not sure this 2013 is at the peak: I guess that with a couple of years of patience the mouth can become more polished and more elegant. For sure a ‘great-value’ Barolo!

2018 Domaine Gallety Côtes du Vivarais Cuvée Gallety Rouge

Syrah more

3/3/2024 - FamousWine wrote: NR

Don't ask me why because I wouldn't really know what to answer but I expected more or different from this one. This is a blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache aged for 14 to 15 months in oak barrels. I aerated it in a carafe for an hour then I tasted it slightly chilled. Of medium intensity and on a flowery background, the nose offers aromas of black (blackcurrant, blackberries) and red (raspberries) ripe fruits, light smoke, dried herbs, some beautiful spices, as well as what I perceive to be a tiny acetic bite. On the palate, the material is pulpy, medium-bodied, carried by plenty of discreet tannins and well refreshed by an accurate liveliness. On the aromatic side, I particularly remember a touch of bitter orange or grapefruit, which can be found both in the mid-palate and in the aftertaste. It's fresh and balanced but the tasting was a little tiring, perhaps the fault of a rusticity lacking a bit of elegance. For sure some people will love this wine but that's not the feeling I had this time. ‘La Syrare’ and ‘La Ligure’ are cuvées of a higher caliber: I have to try them both.

2019 E. Guigal St. Joseph

Syrah more

2/15/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

100% Syrah, 14,5% alc. After being aerated in a carafe for over two hours, it was tasted during a romantic dinner in a sublime Riedel Superleggero Hermitage/Syrah glass and paired with Tournedos Rossini. On the nose, it's an explosion of powerful, flattering tarry aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries, floral potpourri with a hint of violet, subtle tapenade, a bit of raw red meat, all delicately peppered. Wow, it doesn't half move! On the palate, the dense and ripe tannins are coated by the intense gourmand aging so characteristic of Maison Guigal. At this stage, the flavor profile is a little scatterbrained and mixes dark fruits, black olives, espresso, a tiny liquorice and a light peppery background. Additional time in the cellar will allow the silky mouth to acquire more depth and harmony. A beautiful acidic framework refreshes and energizes the aftertaste, however marked by a few catchy tannins. We had a blast with this exuberant teenager, already incredibly accessible with air, so I will definitely buy more. In 5 years it will be even more interesting.

2020 Les Creisses

Vin de Pays d'Oc Syrah Blend, Syrah more

2/11/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

Here it's a quite unusual blend of 30% Syrah, 25% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 25% Grenache, 8% Marselan/Alicante, 8% Mourvèdre and 4% Carignan. The wine is produced by Philippe Chesnelong, with his cousin Louis Mitjavile advising on winemaking. It was aged for 14 to 18 months in vats with the addition of extra-fine-grains staves produced by Tonnellerie Radoux. After an hour of aeration with the bottle uncorked (a passage in a carafe would have been more relevant), the very fragrant nose displays intense, sunny aromas of plums (almost prunes), cherries, freshly cut grass, a bit of leather, some spices and light toasted notes that are never excessive. On the palate, here again plenty of exuberant fruits, on the verge of over-maturity but maintaining a good level of freshness, nicely mingled with perfectly integrated flavors of caramel, vanilla, cocoa, …, which some could probably consider a little caricatured or demonstrative. The mouthfeel is delicious and fine, almost silky, with supple and round tannins. Licorice, soft spices and a little wood in the aftertaste. What can I say except that it's very good. For sure a crowd-pleaser!

2018 Ridge Lytton Springs

Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

2/4/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

The 2018 Lytton Springs is 72% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignan, 2% Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) brought up for 14 months in 10% new American oak. Harvest took place between 4th September and 18th October. 14.5% ABV. It spent an hour in the carafe then was paired with homemade burgers. The nose is captivating (quite sensational, I can even say) and perfectly open, with perfumes of blackberries and red plums mingled with blood orange, violet, a few rose petals, a hint of black pepper and very, very subtle wood. At the first sip, we look at each other: “Wow! That's great!”. Palate starts discreetly, then a wave of juicy, fleshy layers surges into the mouth. It's medium-bodied, with a silky mouthfeel, and it finishes long, long with loads of juicy, slightly peppery fruits and a bit of coffee. This is a wine that combines richness, intense tastes and crazy elegance. It's definitely ready to go now (remember to aerate it for 1 to 1.5 hours if you uncork these days) but I guess it'll climb an additional step with more time in the cellar.

2014 Gilles Bouton Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots

Pinot Noir more

1/21/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

100% Pinot Noir. ABV on this wine is 12.5%. Diam5 used here. Pop'n'pour and paired with black pudding. From a predominantly white vineyard, on a steep west-facing slope, this ’14 red has a classy and fragrant bouquet of small tart cherries, wilted roses, saddle leather, a bit of mild tobacco, a hint of violet and humus. Light-bodied, with lively acids, a crystalline mouthfeel and some subtle earthy accents, the palate displays the right balance. It finishes quite long on leather, spices and potpourri of dried flowers. Of course this cuvée does not play in the big leagues but it's serious, pleasant and nicely crafted. I'm not a PN connoisseur but I can affirm that I really enjoyed this one.

2016 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Les Quartz

Red Rhone Blend more

1/7/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. It was aged for 14 months, in wooden vats and tuns for the Grenache, in barrels for the Syrah. I aerated the wine for a good hour in the carafe before enjoying throughout Sunday lunch. “Les Quartz” is an ambitious cuvée which is certainly several steps above the standards of the appellation. The nose is complex and harmonious with aromas of red berry liqueur, prunes, a bit of leather, scents of garrigue-covered hills and some subtle roasted notes. In the mouth, the body is thinner than expected and the texture is incredibly caressing. Here it's definitely on the finesse and elegance, the complete opposite of the somewhat tiring heaviness that this type of blend can sometimes (often?) deliver. It has a refined and captivating aromatic depth, with some mineral elements, as well as a textbook balance. There's no trace of heat despite the 15% abv written on the label. On the finish, the licorice bitterness can probably seem a little bit naughty to some palates. Not sure there's anything to be gained with more years in the cellar. I guess the wine is on its maturity plateau. This is so delicious! For sure a stunning representative of Côtes-du-Rhône!

2020 Château de Ferrand

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/2/2024 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This 2020 Château de Ferrand is a blend of 74% Merlot, 25% Cab Franc and 1% Cab Sauvignon, whose harvest began on the historically early date of September 14. 14,5% abv on the label. It needed 2 good hours in the decanter to open up completely. Freshness is really the key word here, more than on the 2019 vintage drunk recently, and it really caught my wife's attention. The nose exhibits impressive aromatic depth with very fresh scents of leather, damp earth, a dash of licorice, subtle fragrance of roses, shades of raspberries, blueberries and pomegranate, a turn of pepper mill and chalky minerality. It hits the palate with medium-bodied fresh richness and satin-like texture. It offers layer upon layer of dark and purple fruits, earthy nuances and aromatic plants (coriander?), finishing with a great racy chalky length and some still a bit grippy tannins. Oak is barely detectable despite youth. Seriously good wine enjoyed with a duck breast stuffed with foie gras. Amazing combo! Will obviously be better with more age but yet surprisingly attractive right now. De Ferrand is definitely a hot property in recent years in St-Emilion and you have to watch it closely.

2020 L'Enclos des Braves Gaillac Duras'en passer

more

12/10/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

First time for me facing “Duras”, a black grape variety typical of the Gaillac vineyard. At first sight, blindly, I would have bet for a nice Syrah from the northern Rhône, which I would have located at Crozes-Hermitage. Lovely nose of blackcurrant, wild strawberries, violet, cut herbs, licorice, a ferruginous touch and very, very sweet pepper. Full bodied, the palate shows a rich but not showy substance, still a bit tight, with a core of pulpy and juicy fruits. The tannic imprint is quite evident and a few more years will achieve a perfectly velvety mouthfeel. The natural acidity of the grape variety and the iron-like minerality bring energy and tension. This is a good feature to have such generosity while retaining a satisfying freshness. Lots of fun here! Finally, I must add that the sale price is fair and that the wine is produced according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture. What an interesting discovery!

2017 François Schmitt Riesling Pfingstberg Paradis

Alsace Grand Cru more

10/19/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

The nose of this 2017 struggles to open and the aromatic expression remains not very exuberant despite a good half hour in the carafe. Apparently, the wines from this terroir traditionally demonstrate such a distinguished reserve. However, scents of citrus/orange zest, a little smoke, an imposing chalky minerality, a few tiny traces of hydrocarbon and some delicate fragrances of flower filled orchard manage to get out of the #riedel Veloce glass. The palate is ample and compact, almost curled up on itself, but the tension imposed by the tonic and frank acidity ends up refining and stretching the slightly oily juice. Pure flavors of grapefruit++, lemon, some herbs and subtle florals. It finishes long, on this impression of almost austere straightness, with an intense saline presence, some light spicy reminiscences and a beautiful mineral imprint. This 2017 is still incredibly young, already impressive in its purity and balance, but it has clearly a promising future and the most patient will be greatly rewarded. Of course this is highly recommended!

2020 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

Gamay more

11/26/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This 100% Gamay from the famous Côte du Py lieu-dit is produced by one of the most emblematic winegrowers of the Beaujolais vineyard, Jean Foillard. The wine needed about 30 minutes in the carafe to open up and reduce its rusticity then it was drunk a little chilly during the Sunday lunch. Very expressive and complex nose with plenty of blue and red wild sour berries, a ton of freshly cut herbs, a bit of hay also, violet and a frank pencil lead minerality. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich, carried by supple and delicate tannins, which roll off the tongue and make the mouthfeel so voluptuous and flattering. Powerful flavours of stone fruits, lots of fresh herbs and a dash of mint. The finish is chewy and salivating, with a high aromatic precision, on blond tobacco and a slight earthy side. This Morgon is a true delight! This is another success for Foillard!

2014 Château St-Pierre de Corbian

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/12/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

13.5% abv, 40% new French oak. Lots of fun with this Bordeaux blend from the northernmost communal appellation of the Medoc vineyard. I often cross this Château on the shelves of the supermarket, sold at a very good price. So I was curious to taste this 2014. I decanted it two hours before the Sunday lunch. On the nose: very dark berries, a few pencil sharpener shavings and some smoky scents. It even has a touch of violet. The mouth is medium to full-bodied with an iron tincture at the entry, slightly spicy dark fruits, toasted brioche, a bit of dark chocolate, some dried leaves and a touch of graphite. Some signs of evolution are already there (tree bark among others), both on the nose and the palate. It finishes quite long on a beautiful minty freshness, some friendly, still present tannins and an earthy face. This is such a St-Estephe typical proposal, displaying a serious and austere profile, and this is an excellent value for money. You will be able to drink it with enjoyment over the next 5 years. I'm going to buy the last 2018s I saw yesterday.

2015 Antinori Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

11/5/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

Plot-based, the aging of this 100% Sangiovese lasted 12 months and was done in Hungarian and French oak barrels. Then the different lots were assembled and bottled at the Badia a Passignano estate. The wine was decanted for an hour then it evolved very favorably throughout the dinner. It really reached its peak at noon the next day where it was simply delicious. The posh nose expresses perfumes of morello cherries, strawberries, leather, tobacco, a tiny licorice, a dash of vanilla, on an upper-class background of cedar wood. It feels like a gentlemen's english club. Medium+ bodied, the palate offers an interesting depth and a smooth, wonderfully velvety texture, with flavors of bright berry fruits, black tea, leather, balsamic (this is much more present than on the nose) and some nuances of oriental spices. It finishes quite long, juicy and energetic, revealing notes of licorice, espresso and a bit of wood. Very, very good! I bet that the oak will manage to blend in even more, so I'll revisit it in 2 or 3 years.

2019 Château de Ferrand

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

10/14/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

Made of 73% Merlot and 27% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château de Ferrand was picked from September 19 to October 4. It's initially backward, necessitating 2 hours in the carafe before it really opens. Then the sophisticated young nose reveals beautifully defined scents of fresh dark fruits, a graphite-style mineral touch, some very subtle notes of oak aging and a little gently roasted coffee bean. On the palate, it's more the limestone expression of the terroir which is highlighted. Concentrated and carried by a compact tannic structure, the material unfolds superbly on a pure black berries expression and with this silk taffeta feeling which is the hallmark of the great wines of St-Emilion. The acidity is still a bit naughty for my taste but it's rather an encouraging sign for the future. The significant portion of Cab Franc labels the aftertaste of a feminine elegance, punctuating it with wild raspberries and flowers. Another terrific bottle with potential for improvement! Château de Ferrand is an estate that is gaining momentum in recent years. Can't wait to try the 2020 vintage!

2010 Château Filhot

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

10/15/2023 - FamousWine wrote: NR

The 2010 Filhot is a blend of 60% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon and 4% Muscadelle. It was vinified in stainless steel vats then spent many months in merrain oak barrels from Allier (including 30% new). 13.5% abv written on the label. Its features a fresh bouquet of roasted pineapple, candied lemon, quince sauce and a subtle beeswax. Generous and truly syrupy, the palate offers flavors of exotic fruits (mango and passion fruit), a discreet honeyed background, a touch of mint leaf and a small pinch of cinnamon. Unfortunately, the amount of residual sugar is huge. The wine still has a long work ahead of it to digest this substantial volume. Let's just say that the sweet wave sweeps away everything in its path and the low acidity makes the tasting a little boring. It lacks life, it lacks panache! The wine finishes briefly on dried apricot and coarse sugar. Definitely way too early to uncork this stuff. I have read several times that Filhot's wines age superbly: this 2010 will have its chance again in 20 or 30 years. Stay away from this vintage for a very, very long time!

2018 Domaine du Coulet (Matthieu Barret) Cornas Brise Cailloux

Syrah more

10/8/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

Brise Cailloux is an entry-level 100% Syrah wine from a selection of old and young vines planted on the hillsides (lieux-dits Genale, Mazards, Patronne, Arlettes and Les Eygas). Aging for 18 months was carried out in ovoid concrete vats. An hour in the carafe allowed the wine to reveal itself. Then it nicely matched with black puddings. The fragrant and seductive nose unfolds elegant, subtly smoky scents of dark and blue berries, violet, a little licorice, a pinch of black pepper and some fresh herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate has a delicate and very neat and tidy texture. It's definitively a fresh and caressing juice with a beautiful, slightly destabilizing acidic frame. It finishes long on expressive dark fruits, a small mineral grain and some frank aromas of black olives. Harmonious, very good and a thousand miles away from the raw and rustic Cornas. Can be drunk now after a good hour of aeration.

2019 Château Deyrem Valentin

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

10/1/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

Bordeaux, and the Médoc especially with flaming Cabernets, performed in 2019 and this Deyrem Valentin perfectly illustrates this success. Fairly priced, it must be considered very seriously. It's composed of 55% Cab Sauv, 43% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 47% new French oak. The wine was decanted about 1h30 before the tasting then enjoyed throughout lunch in a magnificent Riedel Superleggero Bordeaux Grand Cru glass. The nose offers a fragrant bouquet of great freshness with well-defined aromas of sweet berries, raspberries, cherry blossom, crushed stones and espresso framed by a discreet toastiness from the oak. The palate is barely medium-bodied with plenty of vigorous tannins. It's really harmonious: fruity on the entry, round, compact and ample in the middle with a delicate and nice acidity, finishing quite long and almost saline on red fruits layers and hints of licorice, graphite and wood. To hold a few more years to get the full benefits, but it's already succulent. Such a beautiful work!

2018 Château Tour Saint-Pierre

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

9/9/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This is a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cab Sauv and 10% Cab Franc, with 14% abv. Ageing was carried out in 225 liter barrels and in a few 350 / 400 liter tuns. After a quick round trip in the carafe and two hours of airing in the bottle, at shoulder level, the nose reveals a wide range of concentrated aromas: blackberries, stone fruits, leather, a touch of licorice and a bit of wood and hazelnut. There're also some captivating floral notes that feminize the whole. This is complex and damn seductive. On the palate, the medium body is supported by pulpy and fleshy round tannins. It offers plenty of small red fruits mingled with hints of coffee, violets and vanilla. It finishes long with licorice and tonka bean. To quibble a little, I could say that, at this stage, the roasted shades still dominate the aromatic palette. Do not be worried, the material has all the qualities required to digest the french oak ageing. This is already incredibly accessible, classy and racy. My advice is to wait longer before playing with the corkscrew: it will be brilliant within 3 or 4 years. Tour Saint Pierre is an estate you must have your eyes on.

2012 Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/16/2023 - FamousWine wrote: NR

Beautiful bottle here but 3 hours of aeration in the carafe was not enough for it to fully demonstrate its qualities. Too late, dinner is already on the table. The wine developed favorably throughout the evening, but at the speed of a galloping snail. The bottle was emptied before full throttle was reached. One can feel all the potential but the aromatic seems locked down, so so tight, not very chatty. Blind, it's really not easy to identify a Pauillac. Don't get me wrong, it's obviously good and racy. But we expect more, given the pedigree of the stable. This first date with PC leaves me with a high degree of frustration because I know that this Grand Cru Classé has much more to deliver. Probably in a difficult stage right now. It's my fault, I should have been more patient. I'm not convinced that you have to uncork it these days. Nevertheless, if the desire is too strong, make sure you prepare the bottle many hours before the tasting.

2020 Two Hands Shiraz Gnarly Dudes

Barossa Valley more

8/13/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

This 100% Shiraz from South Australia was aged for 12 months, mostly in one to six-year-old puncheons and hogsheads. A bit of new French oak was also used. On the nose, lots of violet, dried herbs, jammy blue and black fruits as well as a spot of leather. The palate is incredibly juicy. I expected something a little clumsy and heavy but not at all. The balance is on the razor's edge but it never falls over the warm side (14.2% abv nevertheless). It displays a marked floral profile, attractively feminine, and a medium+ body. The attack is almost sweet then the salivating bitterness awakens, bringing a welcome freshness. Less depth of flavors than on the nose, however. Interesting soft finish with a hint of minerality. The bottle was quickly emptied! I liked it!

Coming from 20-year-old Altesse (aka Roussette) brought up in a mix of 3-wines barrels and stainless steel vats, the 2020 Madame de M from Domaine Vendange is a sensual charmer. After one hour aeration in the uncorked bottle, the nose is comforting, almost regressive, with medium intensity scents of wildflowers, tangerine blossoms, pear and white peach as well as a pronounced presence of very lightly roasted notes that remind me of biscuits or brioche. On the palate, this is a voluptuous ballerina with beautiful seductive curves. The substance is generous and concentrated, with a invigorating core of creamy quince, citrus, apple and dried herbs from alpine scenery. The aftertaste is medium long with a slight saline touch and a wet stone mineral tint. A yummy match with seared scallops! Diam3 cork. 13% abv. Drink now-2025.

2020 Ferraton Père & Fils Crozes-Hermitage Les Calendes

Syrah more

7/2/2023 - FamousWine Likes this wine: NR

100% Syrah, 13.5% abv. Comes from several plots in the communes of Mercurol, Beaumont-Monteux and Larnage. The wine was partially aged in oak demi-muids for 8 months before bottling. The aromatics are very characteristic of Syrah from this place of the northern Rhône with ripe fruits (strawberry jam and black plums), sweet spices, a subtle smoky background (bacon I guess), a bit of peony and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, there is a big presence with a full body supported by cute little round tannins. It's less complex than on the nose, more monolithic, mainly focused on exuberant fruit. The freshness is present through a fine acidity and a bitterness that rises crescendo from the middle of the mouth to the aftertaste. Harsh on day 1 despite an one-hour aeration in a decanter, it fully revealed itself on day 2. This bottle delivers exactly what is expected of it. Hold and revisit in 5 years.
