1999 Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin (Village)
Gevrey Tasting May 17, 2024 Slightly faded Burgundy color and brown rim. Developed, complex, “quintessential aged Burgundy bouquet”. The mouth revealed mature, red fruit (sour cherry), excellent balance, a velvety texture, and spice on a 15 second finish. Terrific showing for a 25-year-old village wine from a great producer in a great vintage. If you like aged burgundy, this is a treat.

Gevrey Chambertin Tasting May 17, 2017. PNP Reddish purple color with browning at rim. Effusive bouquet of red fruit, with earth and tobacco. Medium body, but rich red vibrant fruit producing mid-palate stimulation extending to the back of palate, exquisitely balanced, integrated tannins with spice on a long (30+ second) finish. The wine delivered tremendous intensity without weight. It was terrific, and the wine of the tasting.

Cellared since release Bottle opened 20 minutes prior to pouring at wine dinner. Purple core with slight lightening at the rim. Nose of black fruit, tobacco, and smoke. Rich, black currant fruit with great depth and concentration creating a lush mouthfeel, accompanied by good acidity, freshness, and complexity to go with a 30+ second finish. Excellent showing for this Argentinian Cab – Malbec blend, which never disappoints, currently drinking at its peak. I suspect it has 15 to 20 years of pleasurable drinking ahead.

Acquired in 2010; Enjoyed March 12-14, 2024 Purple core with slight lightening at the rim. Nose of black fruit and tertiary elements. The palate revealed rich, mature fruit, good balanced with soft tannins and a "Graves mouthfeel" to go along with a 10+ second finish. Another 2000 Bordeaux giving pleasurable drinking now. 2012 Domaine Dujac Chambolle Musigny
Cellared since release Opened Jan 1, 2024; drank over 3 nights. Deep ruby, with slight orange rim. Nose of red fruit, and forest floor Black fruit initially in the mouth, good balance (acid) and integrated tannins. To my palate, the wine was initially more Morey St Denis in character rather than a Chambolle Musigny. However, after 90 minutes of air, there was a softer, red fruit predominance and the wine developed complexity, which was apparent on the second and third nights. This was maybe not quite as good of some of the Dujac Village wines I have enjoyed in the past, which have been so good – especially the CM Village. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable, and I think it will get better. If I opened one today, I would give it at least 60 minutes of air before sampling.

Cellared since 2017 after a visit to the winery. Opened December 26, 2023 Dark purple with black fruit and vanilla on the nose. Big, rich, Tempranillo wine with good structure and nice acid providing freshness. There is appreciable oak, and tannin which provides good upside potential for development of complexity and still greater enjoyment. Will open the next bottle in 2026. If I were to open one before then, I would give this at least 1 hour of air.

Cellared since release 2004, Opened and enjoyed Dec 22, + 23, 2023 Deep purple top the rim of the glass. Nose of dark fruit and slight vanilla. Rich, deep black fruit with definite touch of sweetness on tip of tongue, segueing to a sumptuous, caressing mouthfeel. The wine had a 10 second finish. This Mountain Cabernet fruit driven wine is delivering great drinking pleasure at 21 years of age and exemplifies why you buy and cellar good wine. It has a long life ahead, but regrettably, it was my last bottle.

Cellared since purchase 2008 Tasted at Burgundy (Gevrey Chambertin) lunch Nov 15, 2023 Decanted 20 minutes for sediment (minimal) Deep Crimson in the glass with some brown at the rim. There was a pleasant and complex bouquet of black fruit and tertiary elements. The wine was full bodied with black fruit predominating. There was appreciable tannin at the outset that decreased but persisted during the tasting. The palate did not match the nose in that there was minimal complexity and less than a 10 second finish. I may have waited too long with this wine, as I expected more from a 2005 premier cru. Unfortunately, it was my last bottle. I would drink it up.

Cellared since release. Coravined on Nov 13, 14, 15, finished Nov 16. Deep purple to the rim in the glass. The nose featured black fruit and hints of tobacco. The wine was full bodied with rich fruit and impressive creme de Cassis. The was good acidity and good balance, and integrated supporting tannins to go along with a 10 second finish. This second wine of Leoville Las Cases was extremely enjoyable, seemed youthful, and probably drinking at its apex now. I believe this is true of most 2000 Bordeaux that I've had tasted recently. In my opinion it has another 5 to ? 10 years ahead.

Purchased July 2023; Served at Corton tasting Nov 1, 2023 Decanted for 20 minutes for sediment, which was minimal. The wine showed a deep ruby core, transitioning to a reddish-brown at periphery, and was brown at the rim of glass There was an appealing complex nose of red fruit, sous bois, and plum.. The mouth revealed a beautifully matured red fruit, both cherry and black cherry, with a very enjoyable textual mouthfeel. The tannins were soft, but nicely supporting, and they added to the overall enjoyment of this wine, which featured a 10 second finish. This is a tremendously complex wine which evolving continuously during the two-hour tasting.
All in all, a well matured, developed, complex, and very enjoyable a GC Burgundy for people who enjoy aged wines. I would recommend drinking within the next 1-2 years and would not decant this wine in future tastings.

2018 Walter Hansel Winery Pinot Noir The North Slope Vineyard

|
2018 Walter Hansel Pinot Noir North Slope . Cellared since release from the winery. Popped and poured October 18, 2023 and drank over two nights. Purple core with dark red rim to the edge of the glass. Nose of red fruit and slight vanilla. Mouth filling, lush, black cherry fruit, with noticeable but not intrusive oak, good balance, (but not with the acid in many red Burgundies), integrated tannins and a five second finish. It was better on the second night, with tremendous richness and the absence of the oak. The wine is not a fruit bomb. At this young stage it is a fruit driven, well-made, and intriguing pinot noir. This is my first of 6 bottles. I will drink a bottle every 2 years or so over the next 10 years, and probably put the last two bottles in blind Cote de Nuits tastings as “ringers”. It will be interesting to track its evolution, but I strongly believe it has many years of pleasurable drinking ahead.

2013 Cade Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Cellared since purchase in 2014. Opened and decanted with a steak dinner on October 4, 2023. The wine color was deep purple to the rim in the glass. There was subtle black fruit but definite vanilla on the nose. The wine featured full and rich Cabernet fruit, and was definitely fruit driven. There was appreciable oak in the wine but no tertiary development. All of the "action" was up front. That is to say, there was no complexity and a very short finish. There was evident tannin which may allow further development.
For now however, it is a monolithic, Napa California Cabernet.

Deep purple to the rim. Subtle nose of fruit. This is a young, big, fruit driven, very structured wine with firm but not obtrusive tannin, with a 30 second finish. There is no tertiary development yet. The Nicolas blend of 70% Cabernet, 20% Malbec and equal parts of Petit Verdot and Cab Franc is always nice. This is one of my favorite big reds. It never disappoints. The 2007 has 15 to 20 years of enjoyable drinking ahead.
