The next day: Wow, it’s got alcohol, a very good amount of alcohol. With a dinner of heavy garlic, the high alcohol became hot. I left the wine for dessert. So very glad I did. This is an excellent wine. It’s as close to 100 as I can imagine. Beautiful mouth-feel, complex palate. Over a day’s time, this came into focus with fruit, earth, acid, lushness, chocolate, balance. Even with the alcohol, it still managed to be balanced. I’ll try to get more. |

Pretty is a strange word to use for a usually masculine wine, but I found this less animale and savoury than other CdPs I have had. It is hard to find fault with anything in this wine, it is extremely elegant, possesses good structure for aging but is already approachable, has great poise and balance, with lovely notes of cherry and just that little bit of smokiness. It lacked a little oomph next to the fabulous Beaucastel I tasted next, but an excellent wine nonetheless. |

12/20/2007 - Eric wrote: 94 pointsClos des Papes Shootout (Seattle, WA): Very faint aromatics at first with just fleeting notes of soy, something I tend to associate with oxidized wine. With air though this picked up a lot, getting much more spicy and expressive with a hint of lilac. Over time this takes on a pleasing element of pine resin, getting much deeper and more aromatically intense. On first taste this immediately grabs me as a big, meaty mouthful of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with lots of dried herbs, spice and structure. The personality is much more mineral and salty than the other wines in the lineup, again with the pine resin and savory element, quite grippy and dry on the finish. Really good stuff but somewhat forbidding and powerful at this stage. My notes finish with a plea: "GIMME SOME LAMB!!!!" One of 4 tasters picked this as a 2003 and complained that it seemed over the hill and oxidized from the initial pour (note my soy above), but he did agree on retaste that it had rebounded quite a bit. I correctly guessed this as a the 2004 since it shared similar weight and intensity with the 2003's and 2005 but seemed both less sweet (much more savory really) AND rather shut down in comparison. |

12/7/2007 - popquizkid wrote: 89 pointsDecanted for quite some time. This must be closed. Nose is muted. There are some hints of licorice but it is missing that beautiful red fruit that I would expect from clos des papes. Very tannic and the alcohol is dominant with the fruit missing. There is definitely something there it just seems to be hiding. Great mouthfeel even with it being shut down. I have heard that the Avril's believe that this wine shuts down 2-3 years after bottling and I would suspect that this is the case here. |

10/18/2007 - Pknut wrote: NRFrom a half bottle. This wine was seriously excellent. For one thing, it has gained considerable weight and depth from the summer of '06. Yet, for all of its depth and weight, it is light in the mouth and not heavy. When I smell it, it's like smelling a well-made grappa: essence of fruit notes (in this case, red fruits - cherries and berries), with a bit of alcohol around the fruit, but not too much alcohol. On the palate, there is a wide array of flavors - plenty of red and black fruits, animal fur, a bit of sea air salinity, mountain air freshness, liquorice - and both a richness and a purity that are remarkable. On top of all that, there is incredible balance. The tannins are so fine that they give structure with no dryness whatsoever. This wine, despite being very young, is drinking very well today. A/A+. |

8/10/2007 - KPB wrote: 93 pointsMedium ruby; somewhat muted nose shows varietal fruit, lavender, subtle aromas of leather, garrigue. Sweet and rich with light, soft tannins and a little mid-palate harshness that should fade with time. Somehow leaves a slight impression of "soap" right now.... Reminds me of the 2000. Don't drink this now, but if you hold it for a few years, could easily hit 93/94 pts. |
