Ready to drink now and there is some slight bricking as alluded to, but I would still suggest some air to open up the wine and smooth out the denseness of this wine. Definitely thick legs and loads of intensity on the palate as alluded to so would suggest spending some more time with this wine in the glass to let it open up.

nose- strawberry. airy and inviting
mouth - sexy red fruits tittilate but before you can really form an impression a tidal wave of unpenetrable tart overwhelms the palate. To me there is evident quality but this wine, today at least, lacks balance.
As expected, its went quite well with my snap-pea/shitake stir-fry. for a stand alone sipper, however, i had to open something else.

Sock this wine away in the deepest recesses of your cellar - this bottle felt very shut down and felt like it needed significantly more time to integrate the tannins better. "Stern" feels like a weird word to describe wine, but I think the intention is to convey the seriousness of this wine - I am sure this wine will be a great bottle in 20-30 years. It's not a bad bottle now, but I really do think this will be much better in many more years.

I frankly enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would - and this feels like this has all of the best qualities of a Beaujolais with none of (my personally perceived) grievances. So much freshness and vibrancy on the palate, lots of stewed strawberries and great acidity to balance (but not overwhelming by any means). No brettiness at all which was one thing that had turned me off from trying to explore more Beaujolais, but maybe I should explore more given my (very) pleasant experience with this bottle...

Lovely sweet fruited bottle of this. Good concentration. Fine raspberry fruit. Drinking beautifully.

{cork, 14%} Tannins have settled down after some years; a solid, medium-weight dry red, with black berry sort of fruit, low/medium powdery tannins and medium acidity. Decently ripe fruit without being too sweet or fake-tasting. Short-medium finish, but generally an OK wine which could hold another half-dozen years easily enough.

Better than my last bottle, but not as good as the bottle noted previous to that bottle. This time, there is a bit of bell pepper and less pure Merlot. Pretty nice for a $20 twenty-six year-old wine. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.

We tasted this wine at Castro Wine Village in San Francisco before we purchased the bottle. This Granache stood out in the tasting because it was intense but nuanced and structured. Notes of rasberry, truffle, crushed flowers, and forest floor delighted us both. We both agreed this will be better in a few years while still drinkable now.

{screwcap, 9.5%} Full-sized bottle, which has staved off the premature aging that this wine tends to show in this century's vintages. This example is straight from central casting, with a darkening coppery colour. Copper flavours too, apricot, lots of botrytis, medium-sweet, fullish bodied flavour. Still enough acidity to keep it fresh. Medium length finish. Right at peak - drink now.

A gorgeous wine, showing slightly better than the one two days ago (probably because I had less wines preceding this one and because it got more air). On smell and one sip and you know you are in the presence of greatness! The aromas are perfumed with some noted of mocha and cocoa beans. The palate shows layers of red and dark cherry with a chocolate creme, also some cassis and blueberry. The wine is also showing a little earthiness, some black olives, some vanilla and some toasty oak. The tannins are plush and provide a velvety mouthfeel. This wine will definitely get better with time, but it will be difficult to keep my hands off this beauty! 96+ to 97. Even at this price, I think it offers an excellent QPR!

Nice wine though doesn't rank for me among Hall's best. It's still quite tannic and has nice balance and rich dark fruit. It has a nice concentration and intensity but lacked some complexity. Still an excellent wine. We had it over two days. It was slightly better the second day. I might want a year or two before I open the second bottle.

{screwcap, 14%} Partly aged, spectacular nose of pastrami and other deli meat. An undercurrent of composting red fruit. Really great stuff. Palate is very fine too, medium/full in weight, still with medium powdery tannin, medium acid, medium/long finish. Just a great pinot by any standard. No rush to drink either, it seems. As alluded to by other reviewers, this feels more like a Bordeaux than a typical California Cabernet - darker fruit, somewhat more graphite, and showing signs of maturity/being ready to drink. I think it does need some air to help round it out somewhat, but a very interesting contrast to what you would come to expect from California Cabernets.

Last of these, and long in the tooth now. Lively, even racy when bottle first opened - red fruits, cedar, herbal notes. Flavorful on the palate and still some tannic grip on the finish. Somewhat one dimensional at this point, but still checks the boxes. Great with grilled fillets. Au revoir, mon amie!

{cork, 13.6%} Level right at the base of the neck. Cork about a third soaked. Decanted off plenty of sediment and then served. Classic old Coonawarra, with a lash of mint, but also leathery currants and vanilla oak, nicely judged (last JR made by John Wade I think?). Medium/full weight, softly resolved dusty tannins, medium acidity. Medium/long finish, very good indeed. Really impressive.

At this age, this still needs quite a lot of air - after a 3-4 hour decant, this was so incredibly smooth - such silky tannins and literally no residual heat (despite being a 15% wine), with notes of berry and fig. Still youthful but with the air it is so incredibly delicious - as a friend put it, this is "slap yo mama" wine.

{cork, 13.5%} Perfect level, no leakage, crumbly cork, decanted off medium sediment just before serving. Classic aged Penfolds nose, not too oaky though. Lots of leather, gentle tar and roses. Medium weight. Little tannin left now. Beautifully balanced and tasty but let down by an oddly short and dull finish. Passed peak in my view, but still quite drinkable for a while.

Ridge really does last forever, and it feels like this bottle could still keep going. There is still so much great fruit and acidity left in this bottle, and doesn't really show any signs of fading. Tertiary notes are definitely present at this point but in a more harmonious balance with the fruit and acidity. What a treat to drink.

Dark garnet red with 80% orange/20% pink rim, lots of sediment. Blackcurrant, stewed strawberry, prune, candied cherry, dried fig, tobacco, saddle, cedar, spices, honeycomb, tea leaves and earth. Full bodied, medium-high acidity, medium-high tannin, medium structure, medium-high alcohol and medium spicy finish. Bold, complex and explosive. Plenty of tertiary notes and tannins. Good bite on the palate.

Wine at prime or slightly past prime. It still had at least 10 years of life ahead of it if cellared properly. I would starting drinking them up before the fruits completely dried out.

This was delicious and seems to have really matured with some age. Coravined this a couple of times as I was in and out of town the last couple of weeks, and didn't want to fully open the bottle; the first time felt a bit thin, but finally opened it tonight (about half a bottle left), and it was just delicious with a rich, rounded mouthfeel. Golden yellow in color, strong lime and some green apple on the nose and palette, with just a wisp of grapefruit on the finish if you're gulping this. Structure, acidity, fruit all dancing together perfectly right now. Lip smackingly good.

New producer I’ve started hearing about, and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to opening the BdN later.

2019 vintage. 80% fermentation in oak barrels, 20% in amphora. Disgorged May ‘23. 1 g/l dosage. 100% Chardonnay.

Bright, crisp and texturally really pretty. Classically grower champagne in style with the fruit center stage…borders on tropical (in a good way)…white peach, lemon zest, sea spray aromatics. IMO, a great example of where even 1gram dosage can help balance and lengthen out a champagne of this profile. Curious if the use of amphora adds to the mid-palate texture here? After an hour, little bit of sweet toast started to poke out, but it was second fiddle to the fruit. Balanced use of oak frames this well. Finish of chalk/limestone, sea salt, lemon confit, honeyed apple crisps. Worth seeking out.

Weil produced at least three different KG TBA in 2003. This is more than just an amazing wine, it is perhaps unique in my experience, notwithstanding having tasted many of the most renowned TBAs from Thanisch's legendary 1921 Berncasteler Doctor on. No words to describe the complexity, intensity, and constant changing in the mouth. The only TBA to my experience at the same level, and it is very different, is the 1949 J.J. Prüm Wehlener/Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. Cellared since original release.

The nose itself has some tension, with black licorice giving way to some stewed black fruits in the mouth with some tannin that is still slightly chalky. Finally it reveals a bit of jammy dark fruit. A bit perplexing, changing.

1955 Pétrus Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
4/28/2024 - BellevuePhil Likes this wine:

In the hallowed halls of oenological mastery, few wines command the reverence and mystique of the 1955 Pétrus. With each bottle representing a piece of vinicultural history, I embark upon a journey of sensory exploration, eager to unlock the secrets held within its ancient depths.

As the cork surrenders to my gentle persuasion, releasing decades of anticipation in a subtle pop, the air becomes charged with the aroma of aged elegance. Pouring the wine into the glass reveals a hue reminiscent of polished mahogany, its rich depths hinting at the wisdom acquired over sixty-nine years of maturation. With each swirl, the wine bestows upon me a kaleidoscope of scents—earthy truffles, velvety plums, and whispers of tobacco that dance gracefully upon the air.

Upon the first sip, time itself seems to stand still as the wine envelops my senses in a symphony of flavor. The palate is greeted by an opulent tapestry of dark fruits—black cherries, ripe figs, and sun-kissed currants—each layer unfolding with the grace of a well-rehearsed ballet. Yet, beneath this veneer of fruit lies a depth of complexity that can only be achieved through decades of patient aging. Notes of leather and forest floor intermingle with hints of cedar and spice, creating a mosaic of flavor that evolves with each passing moment.

But beyond the sensory delights of the wine itself, each sip evokes memories of a bygone era—a time when the world was poised on the brink of change, and life was lived with a certain effortless elegance. It calls to mind evenings spent in dimly lit bistros, the air thick with the aroma of Gauloises and the laughter of lovers entwined in the dance of passion. It conjures images of Parisian boulevards, where artists and intellectuals gathered to debate the meaning of life over glasses of velvety Bordeaux.

Yet, for all its historical significance, the 1955 Pétrus remains a wine of unparalleled beauty and grace—a testament to the artistry of its creators and the enduring power of the vine. Each sip is a journey through time and space, a fleeting glimpse into a world long past yet forever enshrined in the amber liquid that now graces my glass.

As I sit here, bathed in the warm glow of nostalgia and the intoxicating embrace of the 1955 Pétrus, I am reminded of the profound connection between wine, memory, and the essence of life itself. This is not merely a beverage; it is a portal to a world of dreams and desires, where every sip is a step closer to unlocking the secrets of the universe.

Maybe ill pen a song after this wine, and just a side not from a gentleman, why can't i find a woman like the 1955. Petrus?

NOTE TO SELF: DECANT ONE HOUR GLASS BY GLASS OMG AMMMAZING
