Berry, oak, & earth to the nose. Luxurious deep burgandy in the glass. Looks & smells like it’s going to be good.
Upon first sip - berry notes wrapped in chocolate with notes of leather, oak, & tobacco. Still plenty of tannins and acidity but the wine still gives a full, soft mouthfeel. Nice long finish!
A lot of bang for your buck with this one!
Red
Good with pan seared veggies with Burrata, arugula salad with goat cheese, lamb shank with gnocchi or mushroom Risotto

Restaurant wine purchase, decanted…Silky smooth but not jammy, well balanced with acid pop and sour cherries on the open and drying tannins to finish. Really enjoyed this style that felt very different from many of the Chilean blends I've had. Very clear Bordeaux style.

Color: dark brick red, slightest tinge of brown
Nose: still big cherry, cranberry, violet, eucalyptus, some alcohol
Palate: fresh cherry, big tobacco, cedar, grape stems
Mouthfeel: start is a bit flabby, but boy it moves to tannic, low fruit

Paired fabulously with a heavily peppered ribeye but needs a big protein but the fruit is fading.

100% Ciliegiolo from 11-yo vineyards in Maremma. Aged for 6 months in stainless steel tanks and large oak casks. 13,5% alcohol.

Youthful, somewhat translucent black cherry color. At first the nose feels somewhat reductive with aromas of gunpowder smoke and faint, somewhat flatulent sulfurous notes, which blow off revealing aromas of ripe cherries and brambly notes of black raspberries, some wild strawberry tones, a little bit of licorice root, light spicy tones and a sweet, youthful hint of marmaladey red fruits. The wine feels ripe yet quite light-bodied on the palate with flavors of sweet black cherries and crowberry jelly, some brambly blackberry and black raspberry tones, a little bit of wild strawberry, a hint of savory spice and a touch of smoky reduction. The overall feel is a bit on the soft side, but still quite balanced, thanks to the moderately high acidity and supple medium tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is ripe and juicy yet still quite crunchy with a moderately long aftertaste of blueberries and black cherries, some blackberry marmalade tones, a little bit of savory spice, light sweet notes of ripe strawberries and red plums, a ferrous hint of blood and a touch of sour cherry bitterness.

A nice, pleasant and quite easy little everyday red. There's good sense of freshness and balance here, but the overall feel is slightly on the soft and primary side. Maybe another year or two might help with the reduction and the somewhat marmaladey primary fruit tones. Priced somewhat according to its quality at 27€ for a bottle in a restaurant in Florence.

A well made wine with aromas of Black fruit and Tabaco
The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like medium toast.
Still a vibrant bottle with years to go. Flavors of blackberry.
We enjoyed this wine with Harris Ranch Filet and a Wagyu flank steak with red wine reductions. A treat

Cranberries and a little sulphur on the nose. Given how light it is in body, it has a somewhat surprising amount of acidity and astringency in its structural profile. Overall a pleasant light wine for when you want one that's not too soft on the palate.

The 2017 Riesling Morstein Grosse Gewächs from Wittmann #wittmann had to convince pop and pour. Unsurprisingly, the aromas on the nose were intense right from the start. Lots of dried herbs, plenty of citrus notes and wet stones. I was a little confused by the occasional hints of petrol (somewhat brighter than the usual petrol notes in mature Rieslings). Or are they flint notes after all - I wasn't sure all evening. On the palate, the usual chalk and clay marl-based Morstein fireworks. Taut acidity, lots of energy and substance, this has pressure, is aromatically intense, herbaceous and dark mineral, little fruit - rather lemon thyme, lemon balm and citrus zest, white stone fruit. Not a wine for sissies. But despite the rather cool vintage, not an acid monster, but a demanding and at the same time very enjoyable wine for friends of intensely mineral Rieslings. 94/100 2024-2035

I’ve previously scored/reviewed this 2021 at 91, but this note pertains to the 2nd night tasting - bottle kept under cork for 24 hrs though, importantly, when tasting again for second time it included a 1 hour decant too. Updated score 93.

93 because wine now a softer, rounder better mouthfeel plus the other positive credentials from previous note retained/carried over too.

N….pretty much as previous note.

C….no change, obviously.

T….weirdly better for the 24 hrs sitting in kitchen with a cork in, plus the decant. Just a better glass of the same wine - perfect advertisement for decanting. Details of previous tasting note remain, now just a better experience.

QPR?…. Costs around £12.00 yet feels like £20.00. Utter bargain - if you decant! Will buy again.

Medium orange color. Nose is muted tangerine, wet stone, cut herbs. On the palate the wine is dry with medium acidity, medium body, low alcohol. Flavors are of medium intensity- salinity, tangerine, cut herbs, minerals, dried lemon peel. Interesting palate, but lacking concentration and with a short finish. Tasty- paired well with a radicchio/tinned fish salad

This was an interesting bottle. Poured a glass and it tasted tight and not very appealing, possibly corked. The bottle was set aside at dinner in favor of other wines. Returning to it an hour later, it was really good! Classic California Cabernet, licorice and dark fruits, earthy notes, cedar, with all tannins resolved. It just lacked a little complexity for a higher score. Very good and still fresh.

Ripe darker berry flavored, a bit rustic and chunky in the finish, but a flavorful, fairly full bodied zin. 15.1%

Bright red cherry, slight strawberry, slight dried plum character, forest floor, dried herbs. Medium body, medium+ acidity, firm tannins. Great balance here, the fruit is kept in check with the earthiness, tannins are kept in check by the ripe fruit. Medium finish of dried fruit and herbs. Not the most concentrated, but still delivers good intensity.

Double decanted 3 hours prior to pouring and followed in the glass 2+ hours. Aaron was kind enough to send me the following information:

Turf War is on Tychson Hill in North St. Helena on the lower flanks of Spring Mountain. Colgin’s famous Tychson Hill wine is made from three blocks there. The third, highest and best block is owned by Roy and Kay Bisagno and leased to the LVMH owned winery. 20 years ago Roy and Kay went to the Catholic School auction in town, and bid on and won a lot for $7000 that was entitled “Plant a Vineyard in your Yard” given away by the good catholic vineyard managers of the area. They ended up planting only half an acre in front of their house. It is farmed by David Abreu, Roy Bisagno and I. We make one barrel every year. It is all fermented in an open wood puncheon and hand punched down, moved by gravity to one French oak barrel, once used. The vineyard is planted to 100% Cabernet Sauvignon clone 7 on 101-14 rootstock.

Quite simply, this is a phenomenal wine. I think Mr. Pott is setting a high bar with his portfolio, and this rarity is worth hunting down. It gives you everything…power, finesse, balance. You can decant it more aggressively, and certainly cellar another decade. Highly recommended

Dense, fat, almost gelatinous, but vibrant and lively acids give it life and energy. Vanilla and a hint of toast declare the presence of plenty of oak from the beginning. A little too much, maybe - hopefully to be gulped down by the wine with time. The other bottle will be kept for longer, might buy more and Watch it develop further.

Cherry pie, vanilla, brown sugar nose. Palate has bright acidity, ripe cherries, cheese rind in the palate. This is nicely balanced and drinking great. The nose is decadent and this is an awesome Pinot. I drink a lot of the Russian river and sonoma cuvees from Halleck and this is a clear step up

Dark in the glass, unsurprisingly dark fruits, dense(ish) texture, touch of wildness about it, with something of the farmyard about it. Has the structure to go for a few years. Nice wine, has piqued my interest to try variety/producer some more.

Really good wine.
