Hawkes Bay Tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Meaty, savoury, blackberry, smidge of pepper and an earthy underpin. Slightly sharp acidity lends a red tone to the black fruits, it's a bit of tight with a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

Deep ruby.
Black cherries, black pepper, cinnamon nose.
Ripe black fruits with some dried fruit/raisins palate.
Enjoyable wine which should improve and drink well for 5+ years.

Belated Celebratory visit to Hawthorn; 3/4/2023-3/5/2023 (Hawthorn): Btg off the list. Purple colour. Good acidity and structure, and peppery youthfulness. If I owned bottles of this I’d be leaving them for a while longer - I think a more basic wine would be giving greater pleasure now.

rich transparent purple ruby, lifted aromatics of blue and purple fruit, chook poo, white pepper, young leather, savoury cold cuts, violets and woodspice. Sappy, youthful, bright cherry acidity, fine tannins, bits graphite and ashy earth. Coconut oil and generous violets, and more berries. Easy, emerging, concentrated yet elegant. A pretty wine, too young, better in 5-7 years. Nice mint finish.

Deep Purple. Pronounced. Ripe/cooked black fruit. Plum, cherry, blackberries. Pepper. Violet. Vanilla, cloves, liquorice, smoke, cedar, prune, chocolate. High acidity, high tannin, ripe & smooth. Med alcohol. Med+ body. Long.

Great balance between acidity, fruit and alcohol (13,5%).
Polished style. Not overly complex at the moment, but age worthy.

NB:
Some Viognier skins.
8 months in large oak.

You have to take time with this wine as the freshly-cracked black pepper aroma is so overwhelming that it takes time for anything else to shine through. When it does, you're rewarded with ripe black fruits, cloves, chocolate, prunes, and smoke. It has plenty of acidity and high, grippy tannins. Nice now but will develop further.

Medium+ ruby color. Bright and expressive on nose with fresh raspberry, vanilla and white pepper. Dry, bright acidity, soft tannins, palate follows through (tapers off fairly quickly). Medium body, very good balance, medium finish.

Disappointing. No fruit to speak of, quite dull on the palate.

Vibrant purple-red, deep colour. Black fruit and savoury aromas, maybe a little chocolate; also a eucalyptus note at the back of the nose; rich but balanced. Soft and mellow black fruits in the mouth with a lingering juicy cassis. Balanced and good. Some sour notes balance the sunnier fruits. Good tannins that linger pleasantly.
Red
Deep red. Nose of deep red fruits, leavened with a little raspberry-like red berry; some black pepper. Juicy black fruits to taste, including cassis, with some chocolate and coffee. A pretty good structure with some pleasing tannins (perhaps this could last a few years). Sourness on the finish. Later, a sort of flintiness seems to enter the picture.

Renowned stony Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay produced a concentrated and dense yet vibrant and spicy Syrah. Aged in large FR barrels for 14 months. Deep ruby colour. Intense aroma of liquorice, spiced plums, cherry jam, cassis, black pepper, smoky honts. Full body, concentrated and dense, but also energetic and fresh, rich and juicy flavours of chocolate, toast, blackcurrants, earth, fragrant violets along spicy edges, medium acidity and medium tannins.

Hawkes Bay Tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Aromas of black over green pepper, savoury black hued fruits, a little sweet spice and polished oak. Juicy with a slightly sour note to the black fruits, plenty of texture which is more woody than grapey, proves slightly drying and coarse flour textured, fruit persists, slight alcohol warmth. Time will help.

On sight, Cherry raspberry colour with fast legging.
I open this while i am cutting vegetable, could smell the wine from 1-1.5m away. On the nose, its abit jammy, some red fruit, bits of spice.
Was thinking, its gonna be interesting but when it comes to the palate, watery thin, tannic, nothing more to offer.
Brought half case, #haiz, 5 more bottles to go. Damn.

Excellent . On the leaner side, with peppery blackberry and red fruits. Medium tannins, juicy acidity. While this has some sweet fruit initially, the overall impression is savoury with pepper again on the finish.

A touch of Parma violets to the nose here, a richness of fruit underneath but not overripe or over the top; powdery tannins on the palate, doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of the nose. Disjointed.

Red fruited, slight herbaceous underpin, biscuit and toast notes, leather, blackcurrant underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry, chalky tannins, savoury, peppery...very Kiwi Syrah for me. Alex says like Cornas but without the dirty barrels.
I guessed Kiwi Syrah, possibly Hawkes Bay, 2016

London tasting brief note

Value-for-money note: I liked this wine, I've marked it 92 (I'd be prepared today to mark it 93 if I include it's potential), but in terms of VFM I have to say I do not feel it is worth anything near it's Rec RP £98.00....maybe worth £60.00
Anyway, now the Elephant in The Room is outta' the way, on with the positives - of which there are many, I am happy to say:

N....medium intensity, some oak and quality fruit

T....heavy body, inky, maybe too much oak/it not yet married; there is a lot going on here, nice earthy characters, wet stone, lovely fruit handling, an essence/power which feels almost Cote Rotie-like (Homage...Syrah, we get it), this is way too young at the minute; obvious cellar potential. It ends dry, significant tannins. It is very good wine but I remember previous vintages been better - outstanding, beyond 92/100 - than this 2017.

Rec RP £98.00.....as note above says, very good wine but I am still saying for me it ain't worth anything close to £98.00

Logging out of inventory from a few weeks ago, the prior note from domthesomm and the Vinous note both ring true to me. Perhaps a little better in a couple of years but a nice Syrah already, like a classy St. Joseph. Acceptable at $50.

Tasted at The Wine Society's tasting of New Zealand wines, London, UK. Dark maroon colour, lighter at the edges. Dusty feel and there's not much fruit on this. It didn't do much for me.

It’s far too young but, wow! Impressive wine. Loads of cracked pepper, blueberries, dried herbs, strawberry, florals, and a touch of meat. Low alcohol with tons of finesse. Lovely stuff!

3. Medium purple color. Distinct aroma of freshly grounded black pepper (but not much else). Dry, soft acidity, mouth-coating tannins, taste of blackcurrant and black pepper. Medium full body and finish. Opened too young. Guess NZ Syrah blend 2017. 88 (5/6). Result NZ Syrah Trinity Hills Homage 2016. BOOMZ!

Deep Ruby
N: Medium+ intensity of overwhelming white pepper, slight gamey/meatiness, dark red fruit
P: black cherry, meat/bacon fat, earth, but overt white pepper throwing everything out of balance; in my opinion.
Not sure if this will improve with time
technically - Med + intensity of flavors as stated above, M acid, m+ tannins, m+ body/alcohol.
Lacks complexity/depth of flavors, white pepper(rotundone) is just overwhelming
Sorry - tasting is not technically sound, but the wine just threw me

Notes from second day open. Pure ruby color, about 80% saturated with slow, lightly-stained legs and a tiny bit of sediment. Bright pepper, juniper, and pyrazines lead the bouquet, followed by Herbes de Provence and dark berry. The mouthfeel is medium-big bodied, smooth, with nicely balanced acidity and light tannins, along with some serious gravelly stones. But boy, this really is a pepper-lover’s wine and, to me, it reflects its terroir to a tee. Seems pretty much ready to drink with plenty of life ahead.

This is a Syrah and not a #shiraz because it's delicate, with hints of spice, light fruits of cherries and blackberries, soft tannins interwoven with liquorice, leather and lovely finish. It's great little wine and thanks Andy @harrogatewines for another great recommendation. And a £16 bang on the money @trinityhillwines great effort 👍🍷I like it. . 89 Points

Again, I followed this bottle for 24+ hours open and even more than the first, it truly showed as a wine of class and promise and I would definitely rebuy if I could. Clear and sound, medium ruby color with no sediment. The bouquet sheds the bell pepper with air and leaves behind an enticing aroma of baked blackberry pie and perfume. The palate has gained a savory quality and it also accelerated as the wine was aerated. By the last glass, there was enough distinction and gravitas to even say that the wine was showing its terroir! Honestly, I think Trinity Hill has something great here.

A little green and muted and on the lighter side. Crisp peppery red and blackcurrant on the palate with a little tannin and acidity on the finish.

Revisited after a day or so in bottle - did not improve, fruit still a little thin, nice peppery finish - but would downgrade to 88.

Hawkes Bay Certificate Lesson (Shanghai): 94-95
Medium ruby, black pepper, spicy, red fruit, savory, cream
High tannin and long refreshing acidity balanced everything coherently. The finish is so long, pure and spicy.A typical Hawkes Bay Syrah presenting the co-existence of complexity and purity.
