Tasted October 20, 2010 - November 12, 2010 by 3daywinereview.com with 1,264 views

Introduction

The best charity tasting every year in the Twin Cities for just $25.

Flight 1 (54 notes)

Red
1989 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Drinking well right now and a ringer for aged Bordeaux. Mild funk, tobacco, spice and cassis. Good concentration on this wine and tannins have mellowed out. Medium finish and I would say drink up as I don't see it improving any more at this stage.
White
2007 Talbott Chardonnay Monterey USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey
86 points
Average Cali Chardonnay with pear, apple, spice and oak. The palate features a bit too much oak for my liking and hides some of the fruit. Medium finish.
White
2008 Talbott Chardonnay Logan Sleepy Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
87 points
Too much oak is the problem here. Shows some spices, vanilla and apple but the oak interupts the wine. A bit too much money for the quality.
Red
2008 Talbott Pinot Noir Sleepy Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
87 points
Nothing too exciting here but drinkable. Strawberry, spice and floral notes dominate. Medium finish.
Red
2008 Talbott Pinot Noir Logan Sleepy Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
88 points
Nice overall with floral, spice, raspberry and minerals. Medium finish and should pair well with some grilled salmon.
Red
2005 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
93 points
Not as good as the 04 but really nice featuring spice, dust, cherry, leather and earth. Not a powerhouse wine but still has firm tannins. This should evolve over a decade but is drinking well right now. Decanted 2 plus hours.
Red
2008 Alexis Bailly Vineyard Voyageur USA, Minnesota
61 points
It is hard to believe this is one of the top Minnesota wines actually grown in Minnesota. It had a paint thinner quality to it along with damp earth. Short finish. At $22 a bottle it is hard to believe anyone would buy these wines.
Red
2006 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Solid effort but not as good as the 06 Merlot. Plum, spice, and cherry on the nose and taste and it has a medium finish.
White
2008 Talbott Chardonnay Logan Sleepy Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
87 points
Pear, lemon, oak, and minerals. The finish is medium and it picks up a buttery quality. A bit too much oak for me.
Red
2008 Justin Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
85 points
Another sub par score for a Justin wine. Floral and spice dominate this wine with a bit of cherry on the palate. It has a sweet taste which you would expect for a $8 Cali Cab.
White
2007 Talbott Chardonnay Monterey USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey
87 points
Not bad Chardonnay wiht lemon, oak, vanilla and minerals. Medium finish.
Red
2007 Duckhorn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
87 points
Cherry, plum, and oak dominate this one. Again too sweet on the palate as if designed for the Napa Valley only drinker. Not a stellar 07 but drinkable.
White
2009 Louis Jadot Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
87 points
Good wine overall with spice, minerals and pear. Medium finish and good acidity.
White
2008 Louis Jadot Mâcon-Villages France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages
82 points
A burnt earth descriptor one would find in a Northern Rhone Syrah. Some minerals and fruit but not a good reflection of the region.
Red
2005 Rocca Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
92 points
Better than the last time sampled with spice, cherry, plum, oak and a buttery finish. Well made and concentrated. Should cellar for five plus years.
Red
2006 Columbia Crest Syrah Grand Estates USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
89 points
This is a solid effort for under $10. Medium purple and a nose of smoke, plums and cherry. On the palate it picks up leather and earth. Also there is some sweet fruit. Medium finish and a crowd pleaser.
Red
2005 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
92 points
Mondavi is back in my opinion. The 2007 Napa Cab was really nice and the 06 Reserve has some long term potential. The Oakville was spot on for Napa Cab and features plum, cherry, mineral and oak. Good concentration and balance overall. This should evolve over the next five years. Well done!
Red
2006 Chimney Rock Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
93 points
Another great 06 Napa wine! Cherry, earth, blackberries and oak on the nose. Serious flavors on the mouth with a nice combo of fruit and earth. Long finish and firm tannins should allow this wine to age for a decade or more. 93+
Red
2006 Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
87 points
This is declassified Cherry Block juice and it doesn't show. Cherry and minerals make up this light style wine. Not sure why the wine turned out below average for using upgraded juice. I liked the simple Sonoma Cabernet better.
Red
2006 Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
88 points
Nice everyday Cab with cherry, plum and minerals. Medium finish and good QPR and better than the 06 Alexander Valley which is Cherry Block juice.
Red
2007 Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
84 points
Not very good and featured spices and not enough fruit. I have not been impressed with Buehler and I had a 03 that was dead in the water recently and furnished with a synthetic cork.
Red
2006 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Volant USA, California, Central Coast
89 points
Not nearly as good as 05. A clean wine with raspberries, violets and minerals. Medium finish but lacks the CDP character the 05 had.
Red
2009 Mollydooker Cabernet Sauvignon The Maitre D’ Australia, South Australia
90 points
A pleasant surprise among the boring Napa Cabernets at a recent tasting. Blackberries, cherry, and spice on the nose. The wine is balanced and not over extracted. Medium finish and drink now.
Red
2007 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
84 points
A terrible 07 wine. Spice, earth and a bit green. Tannic and not showing enough fruit. I would hope bottle variation but this wine was not corked.
Red
2007 Duxoup Syrah USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
91 points
What a great wine with cherry, plum, minerals and floral notes. Just fun to drink and while not complex as some Syrah wines it doesn't cost a fortune and at $15.95 worth buying half a case.
White
2007 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Typical Private Reserve. Never bad and never outstanding. Oak, vanilla, lemon and pear. Medium finish and of course the oak shines through a bit much.
Red
2005 St. Clement Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
82 points
Dirt, oak and spice. Nothing to get excited about.
Red
2006 St. Clement Cabernet Sauvignon Oroppas USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Far superior to the 05 Napa Cab. Cherry, plum, spice, oak and minerals. Very concentrated wine and full of life. Medium finish.
Red
2005 Roberts + Rogers Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
85 points
Not a fan of this over the top Napa Cabernet featuring cherry, spice and firm tannins. Not enough elegance.
Red
2007 Montes Alpha Syrah Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
88 points
Not bad new world Syrah. Cherry, spice, and floral notes. Not heavy and easy to drink.
Red
2006 Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Landslide Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
91 points
Much better than previous vintages. Plum, spice, cherry and mild oak. Medium finish and a balanced wine. Not too intense.
Red
2007 Montes Purple Angel Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
91 points
Big and concentrated Carmenere. Plum, spice, violets and a little cellar funk. Full of flavor and life and I would like to revisit this wine on day 2 as I think it would be even better.
Red
2008 Wild Horse Pinot Noir USA, California, Central Coast
85 points
Not as good as the 05. Light wine with strawberry, minerals and floral notes. Lacks the concentration and additional fruits of the 05.
White
2008 Stags' Leap Winery Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Not bad and surprisingly very little oak detected. Lemon, spice and pear make up this smooth Chardonnay.
Red
2006 Stags' Leap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Not bad overall with smoke, earth, cherry and oak. Medium finish.

Red
2006 Stags' Leap Winery Petite Sirah USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
The star of the Stag's Leap Winery wines. Blackberries, smoke, minerals and floral notes. Concentrated wine and always a treat to sample.
Red
2006 Calistoga Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
82 points
How many over priced under performing Napa Cabs are there??? This wine is boring and lacks any depth.
Rosé
2008 Etude Pinot Noir Rosé USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
Really nice rose wine with strawberries, floral and minerals. Not sweet and just fun to drink.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
91 points
A wonderful wine with spice, lemon, minerals and dough notes. No flaws and the distributor said this is declassified juice from Cristal from 01.
Red
2007 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
A great bottle of wine with spice, cherry, plum, and oak. Tight right now but you can tell this will develop into a great wine over time as everything is there.
Red
2008 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena Argentina, Mendoza
88 points
Another solid showing with blackberries, spice, earth and plum. Medium finish and good range of flavors.
White
2008 Chappellet Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
One of my favorite Napa Chardonnays under $30. Apple, pear, spice and mild oak create an approachable Chardonnay to please the masses.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
87 points
Not as good as past N.V. Piper's. Spice, yeast, orange peel and really creamy on the palate. Not as good acidity as I remember. I will pass on another bottle at $30.
Red
2007 Steltzner Vineyards Claret USA, California, Napa Valley
85 points
Average wine with spice, oak and some fruit. Medium finish but not as good as the Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet or Merlot.
White
2008 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
93 points
Really nice wine with subtle oak, spice, apple and pear. Fruit is the main component in this wine and the sublte oak and spice add complexity.
Red
2007 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Not bad with cherry, plum, spice and earth. Medium finish but really not worth the tariff.
Red
2007 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
92 points
This wine evolved over the course of the evening. Blueberries, spice box, vanilla and oak on the nose. The palate is concentrated and shows fruit and earth elements that are in harmony. Medium finish and this will evolve over the years. Drink again in five.
Red
2006 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Really opened up over 3 hours to reveal cherry, plum, earth and toasted oak. Good concentration and medium finish.
White
2008 Ramey Chardonnay Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
91 points
I really enjoyed this wine with spice, apple and mild oak. Really easy drinking wine with complexity.
Red
2007 d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
88 points
Drinkable yes but I have really never loved this wine. Floral, black fruits and spices dominate the nose and palate. Medium finish.
Red
2008 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon H3 USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
90 points
Wonderful value Cabernet and better than half of the overpriced Cabs from Napa. Dust, cherry, plum and earth on the nose and palate. Medium tannins and this should drink well for five years.
Red
2006 Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Landslide Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
Again drinking well with cherry, plum, spice and oak. Medium finish and a nice comeback for a wine I have not enjoyed in years.
White
2009 Cliff Lede Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Nice again with grapefruit, minerals, and floral notes. Good acidity and should pair well with seafood.
Red
2007 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
91 points
Nice wine but not as outstanding as some of the vintages and surely better than the 82 from Spectator. Earth, cherry, spices and leather dominate the nose and palate. The finish adds a buttery notes. Firm tannins and this wine will need some time in the cellar but I like what I see currently.
