Introduction

This was the monthly tasting group event. Two tables of 8 or so. Some bottles were shared, smaller pours on those in the second flight

Flight 1 - Table 1 Wines (12 notes)

White
2007 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
89 points
Pale gold color. Petrol, mineral, some grass, and later some light florals and tropicals. The palate is light, moderate acid, average finish. Pleasant.
Red
1996 Domaine Thomas-Moillard Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
86 points
Medium red color, marked bricking. Oxidized, wood, tart red fruit, prominent acid. Sliding down the slope quickly.
White
2006 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
94 points
Deep gold color. This was lovely. Toast, oak, green fruits, florals, nuts, fig. Later developing some butter and roasted marshmellow notes. The palate is consistent with the nose, classy, lush, but not over the top. Oak is moderate. Great balance and a long finish. I really enjoyed this, and while this is a bigger style, I don't think it's over done at all.
Red
1993 Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon Réserve Spéciale USA, California, Sonoma County
94 points
Very dark red color, no bricking. I found this to be outstanding. Gave it a 30 minutes decant, improved over 30 minutes more and was going strong 3 hours later. Nose had a perfume of florals, damp earth, blueberry, cassis, graphite, subtle oak. The palate is gorgeous with a nice core of dark fruit, graphite, oak, and mineral, soft with velvety tannins, nice acid, and a very long finish, oh so elegant. My WOTN, 94+pts.
Red
1996 Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Very dark red. Nose shows ripe fruit, mulberry, cassis, spice, herbs, oak. The palate has good depth, glycerin, nice round tannins, cassis, with a rich finish with oak notes. This drank quite well and was not showing any age.
Red
2001 Lagier Meredith Syrah USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
91 points
Dark red/purple color. This was big, with meat, eucalyptus, blackberry on the nose. The palate is deep, ripe black fruit, full body, meaty, dusty. 91+pts.
Red
1997 Swanson Alexis USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
89 points
Very dark red. This bottle was in pretty good shape. It was a bit hot on the nose and palate. Nose has oak, spice, alcohol-mild, herbs, briar. The palate is fairly nice with good fruit, cassis, plum, oak, and some heat on the finish at times. The balance is off here a bit, but overall holding up fairly well.
Red
2001 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Very dark red. This was a fascinating wine. The nose was extremely aromatic, starting off with almost pure eucalyptus that evolves into creme de menthe, in fact it started to smell like an Andes mint after awhile. I had a hard time getting anything more off the nose since this was so powerful. The palate was velvety, with mint, blackberry, cassis, good acid and round tannins. Nice structure, nice balance. Very enjoyable now, but I think this needs some time to fully evolve.
Red
2002 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Very dark red/purple. This was outstanding. Lush and silky on the palate, great balance, spice, black fruits, oak and hints of mocha. My #2 WOTN. 94+pts.
Red
2004 Regusci Patriarch USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
93 points
Very dark red/purple color. this started off a little slow, not sure how much decant this got. Nose has blackberry jam, plum, spice, moderate tannins. This evolved to show some nice forest floor, herbs, and a long finish.
Red
2007 EMH Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cat USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Very dark red/purple color. Lots of licorice, spicy, heat, red fruits, prominent acid, somewhat grippy tannins. This is very young, and despite a 4 hour decant was not integrated well. I would like to revisit this in a few years.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2000 Weingut Ernst Bretz Bechtolsheimer Petersberg Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Rheinhessen
89 points
Amber color. Not overly sweet, good acid, nice fruit.

Flight 2 - Table 2 Wines/small pours (5 notes)

Red
2004 Pax Syrah Griffin's Lair USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
Small pour, but notes of chocolate, blackberry, cassis, glycerin, fairly rich, nice balance, medium plus finish.
Red
2000 Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
I only got one small swallow of this, but what I did get was very impressive. Ripe creme de cassis, velvety, long finish. Impression 93-94pts.
Red
1997 Viader USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Small pour, black cherry, herbs, tobacco, alcohol, oak.
Red
2007 Lillian Winery Syrah USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Purple/red color. Really aromatic and herbal nose with oak, eucalyptus, creosote, tar, meaty, blackberry liqueur. The palate shows some heat, big fruit, spicy, tar, medium finish.
Red
2006 Betz Family Syrah La Côte Rousse USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
91 points
Very dark purple/red color. Smokey, briar, spicy, pepper, licorice, blackberry, a little heat on the finish. fairly complex.
