Introduction

We take turns. The host provides the dinner and all the wines. There is no theme and all wines are poured fully blind.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
I love Krug, but this tasting note is about a half bottle from a duty free sale point. No idea how old it is and how terribly it has been stored and for how long. The bouquet is oxidized with nutty flavors, some honey and butterscotch. On the palate apples, a lot of nutty flavors, bitterness and acidity. Hardly any bubbles left. This simply was a mistreated bottle and much too old. Tasting note for the record and no score.

Beautiful and complex bouquet with bacon, yeast, minerals and smoke. On the palate a beautiful and still powerful bubble, crustacean, some nutty flavors, good citrus acidity and overall still very youthful. Really beautiful Champagne. 92 – 93

In the bouquet some minerals and barnyard flavors as well as soft yellow fruits and some vanilla. On the palate apricots, ripe apples, spiciness and mild acidity. A round and full bodied, very tasty and complex wine.

Red and dark forest fruits, chocolate, vanilla, a touch of sweetness, firm acidity and still sticky tannin with a good future. No problem keeping this until 2018+?

2010 Château Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

In the bouquet creamy dark berries like cassis. Same on the palate. Some bell pepper impressions. A firm dose of acidity and tannin. A bit warmer the wine becomes a bit more friendly and round. Needs time. At the moment not a great pleasure. Wait until 2021 at least. 88+

A friend opened a bottle again. A confirmation of my note of September. Wait until 2021+. I (blind) scored the wine 89 this evening.

Ripe fruits, leather and minerals in the bouquet. On the palate ripe dark fruits, leather, some sweetness, sweet spices and a firm dose of oak. A mouth full. Still very youthful. Can easily last until the mid 2020's. I have a few, so there will be a follow up. 92 - 93+

2008 Mas Jullien Terrasses du Larzac France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Terrasses du Larzac
87 points
Yoghurt and cherry candy flavors in the bouquet, some dark berries as well. On the palate lactic as well, dark forest fruits, some smoke and oak, good acidity and fairly supple tannin. In this stage not overly interesting. It is still youthful, so maybe with another 3+ years of ageing it will show more complexity and finesse. Not sure. 87+?

Youthful and concentrated bouquet with cherries and good herbs and spices. On the palate some chocolate, spiciness, a touch of sweetness balanced by good acidity and round tannin. Overall a beautiful and well balanced wine with a good length. Still youthful. No problem storing this until at least the end of the decade. 91+

Very youthful and creamy bouquet with dark and red berries. On the palate dark forest fruits, some spiciness and licorice and beautiful oak. Beautiful acidity and round tannin with a firm bite. Overall an excellent wine with a great concentration and a lot of promise for the future. Probably wise to wait until 2020 at least. 92 – 93+

I did not make many detailed notes. Still a purple color. Concentrated bouquet with some sweetness and mint. A somewhat sweet start with creamy and ripe red and dark forest fruits, some chocolate and beautiful acidity. Probably needs at least until 2020 to show more of its beauty. For tonight 90 – 91+.

1982 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

In the bouquet coffee, mocha, tea, smoke and beautiful oak. On the palate a beautiful and mature wine. Still juicy. Coffee, chocolate, sweet spices, beautiful oak, earth, mushrooms and autumn flavors. Still very good and pleasant acidity and soft tannin. This is a fully mature and extremely beautiful bottle. The wine will not improve anymore, but becoming at this age and being still so beautiful, if you have a well stored bottle it will probably still be nice around 2020 or even an bit later. But until 2040 as the drinking window in CT indicates now is imho quite ridiculous.

Beautiful mature bouquet with chocolate and some autumn impressions. On the palate silky soft and ripe, chocolate, some autumn impressions, a bit salty even, mocha, beautiful acidity and powdery tannin. The wine is completely ready now and will not improve anymore. On the other hand; no real hurry either.

In the bouquet mint and eucalyptus. Same on the palate, a lot of sweetness but also still beautiful acidity with beautiful freshness and soft tannin. Overall a beautiful and mature wine which is still very much alive and no real hurry.

Honey and flowers in the bouquet. On the palate beautiful and elegant botrytis, candy flavors, apricots and ripe pineapple. A lot of sweetness, beautifully balanced by good acidity. A really beautiful and mature wine which can probably last at least another decade.
