Flight 1 (9 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
93 points
Unknown edition/disgorgement, but likely a newer release. The nose here shows some classic Krug characteristics, with some bruised apple, some bread, some nuttiness. The palate shows a bit of white grape, and some really nice power. This doesn't seem to have the same white-hot acidic drive as the 164eme though. Quite young and juicy and dense, this needs some time to unfurl.

2000 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart France, Champagne
90 points
Very bready and yeasty nose, with a slightly darker colour than such a young champagne ought to have. The palate shows quite a bit of richness; this seems to have a fair bit of pinot in it. It's a very rich and dense wine, mostly bready, and a good amount of acidity. Not as fresh as I'd want, but a solid bottle all the same.
White
2015 Leflaive & Associés Auxey-Duresses Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses
83 points
The nose is butterscotchy and ripe, with a touch of reduction. The palate is oily, fat, and ripe. It has good acidity, but this is so sweet and waxy I'd be more inclined to guess California. Not a fan.
Red
2004 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Vigna Croera di La Morra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
No. 3193 of 7060. Beautiful nose here that hits most of what I want in a 2004 Barolo. This is gentle, elegant, and downright beautiful. Light florals, some earth, and some beautiful fruits. The palate comes off a little coarse, more so than really has any business being. The flavours here are certainly spot on, so the lacking here is more of a textural thing. This still has great structure; certainly in no risk of decline (despite my hearing a report to the contrary a few months ago, which prompted my opening of this bottle). The coarseness dissipated with extended air in the glass, and in fact, the delicacy and beauty of this wine increased with time. Gives me hope.

2008 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
90 points
Slightly high-toned, with tons of crunchy red fruit on the nose -- an absolutely classic 2008 profile. The palate is a bit lighter than I would expect, showing a bit of stemminess and fruit that isn't too potent; a wine that makes me worry for the long-term potential. Of course, this is really pretty and delicate now, but will the fruit outlive the structure?

2011 Bonneau du Martray Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
80 points
Good red fruit on the nose -- this reminds me of 2008s in their crunchiness, but this is certainly marred by the nasty ladybug smell. The palate actually isn't as green as many 2011s, but it suffers from some bad acidity and bitterness, as well as an abrasiveness that is really unpleasant. There is some odd chemical quality that I am not a fan of here too, but it's not the overt green that I've found in other 2011s.
Red
2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
A deeper-hued nose, with red fruit and earth that seems classic Nuits. The palate is svelte and powerful, with some riper fruit and dark earth. Classic Nuits profile, and just delicious. As a really full-bodied 2008, this seems a bit of an oddity in the context of the vintage; of course, this is the sort of wine that I'd expect that will stand the test of time (I have not been super optimistic with many 2008s that I've tasted).

2010 Alter Ego France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
As far as second wines go, this is actually quite nice. The nose shows some new oak, but lots of dark fruit, and some signs of riper fruit. The palate is definitely a bigger wine, but there's good restraint here all the same. Earthy and dense, and clearly primary, but nowhere does this get over the top.
White
2014 Alice et Olivier De Moor Chablis L'Humeur du Temps France, Burgundy, Chablis
93 points
Absolutely brilliant Chablis. So light and airy, with beautiful white fruits, as well as some pineapple flavours. Tons of acidity, with some gentle sweetness and roundness. Light, fresh, and just brilliant. Classic minerality as well, really, what more could you want?

White - Sparkling
2008 André Clouet Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
88 points
A really nice crispness to the nose and palate of this wine; this certainly shows some of the lovely acidity of the vintage. It's a very chalky wine, with tons of minerality and lemon. Not too complex, but approachable and enjoyable all the same.
White - Sparkling
2000 Krug Champagne Clos d'Ambonnay France, Champagne
413063, bottle 1403. Leftovers from the night before, with some slightly deteriorated mousse. This has a nice softness and generosity to it; it's not a particularly heavy or powerful Krug, but there are hallmarks of the big-bodied oxidative style here all the same. Some notes of bruised apple, mushrooms, and nuts here. The acidity is enamel-stripping. The quality is still clearly apparent in this wine, but as far as price goes...

2011 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Initially, this was excessively high-toned, cough-syrupy, candied, and not particularly convincing. Thank goodness I opened this 12 hours before serving! The nose here has developed spectacularly, becoming more demure, with hints of dirt and perfume simultaneously appearing. The tannic structure has softened a bit, but still shows mildly medicinal. There are beautiful red fruits and a delicate softness in this wine, despite its showing really hot and alcoholic last night. Silky and soft now, but still showing great structure.

2013 Aubert Chardonnay Carneros USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
80 points
As far as Aubert goes, I've had more boring. The nose shows lots of butterscotch, butter, coconut, ripe fruit, and a bit of citrus. The palate is blowsy and waxy, with so much ripeness that this comes off as tropical. Oaky, but there is a touch of acidity that mercifully helps cut through all the grease.

2006 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
A very dark and correct rendition of the vintage, this has a really deep and dark profile. The nose has lots of earth and doesn't show the bright fruit profile of the 2011; this is a much more brooding Barolo. The palate, too, is much darker in profile and more closed. There seems to be a lot of coiled power here; while the 2011 is more delicious and approachable now, I think this will end up being the better wine.

2006 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Extremely aromatic nose -- darker toned, as with many 2006s, but with an explosive fruit and florals. A really elegant and polished nose, which doesn't really say traditional, but certainly isn't offensive at all. In fact, it's incredibly entrancing. The palate isn't as open as the nose, it's mostly a dense and coiled bottle of black-fruited tannin for now. Not ready now.

2005 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
This is an outstanding red burgundy, and if my Clos de la Roche bottles show anything like this, I will be immensely pleased. The nose here shows a great balance of earth and red fruit, as well as a moderate bit of mushroom. The palate is on the cusp of resolving, but this is mostly still a dense and tannic wine with some of the wispy beauty of Chambolle emerging.

1996 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Absolutely classic Bordeaux. I'm told the nose was quite poopy at first, but that certainly cleared up with air. The palate and nose are quintessential Bordeaux, with some of those classic cedar and leather aromas. Really nice ripeness and balance, this doesn't show too angular at all. In fact, it seems to be fairly resolved. Delicious.

2012 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
A very delicate nose, with layers of red fruit, perfume, and a hint of earth. There's a little bit of herbaceousness as well, perhaps mint? The palate is light and soft, with some gentle fruit profiles. This isn't a particularly dark and powerful wine, but it is certainly quite perfumed and delicious. A bit lighter than I'd like.

1996 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
95 points
No. 1934 of 5670. The nose here is aromatic and light, with a beauty that aged nebbiolo picks up. A hint of dirt, as well as some intense floral aromas. The palate is soft, but shows the tannic structure of 1996 for sure, though it is surely on its way to resolution. A real beauty.

2012 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Beautiful nose. This is light, airy, and delicate, with incredibly sweet red fruits. It's perfumed and very pretty aromatics. The palate is really light and beautiful as well, with tannins that are clearly young but without any harshness. This is an insanely beautiful bottle of young nebbiolo, though quite different in character than the 2011 and 2006 I had alongside.

2013 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
93 points
What an incredible bottle of sauvignon blanc. It's a heady and rich wine, with a very, very exotic nose and palate. Not super ripe as some Vatan can end up being, but it still has that complex richness that makes this the incredible wine it is. Not sweet at all, but the sheer amount of fruit here makes it seem that way. Great acidic cut to balance out the fruit as well.

1996 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
A fairly dense and taut Bordeaux, with a nose that shows lots of ashy character. Tobacco? There are some of the usual black fruits on the nose as well. The palate is very classically structured, with a nice bit of herbaceousness as well as fruit. It's got a generous portion of earth as well. This is a bit more austere and structural than the Pichon Baron that we had as well.
