2009 Vietti Barolo Castiglione Nebbiolo
Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing black currants, black cherries, plums, earth, light wood, dark coffee and Indian spices.

Grippy finish with raspberries and pomegranates.

This Single Vineyard Barolo is not as good as the Riserva, but still very tasty. A good food wine.

Not from a great vintage, but this 14 year old drinks very nicely now.

Showing nice complexity, and feels young. Will be nice to revisit it in 5 years, and see how it evolves.

Robert Parker 94 points. Wine Spectator 92 points.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were fermented in stainless steel, and aged for 24 months in oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$115.

8/15/23, 7:53 PM - Please note that the Castiglione bottling is not a single vineyard bottling for Vietti, but a blend of their single vineyards and it is their entry level Barolo. And an excellent and dependable entry level Barolo, imho. Thanks for sharing your note on the wine!

This is what I was going to go for, but also what the Somm recommended, so that’s that.
WOW, very Kalamata olive, with a toasty meat driven edge. A little citronella note behind that and Red Raspberry fruit starts to come more to the front with more time in the glass and the decanter.

There’s discussion of Ammanit de Cesar Mushrooms which JB said Alain Ducasse called the King of Mushrooms. Time to search these out….

4/26/23, 7:38 AM - I chose not to give wines a numerical score. But if I did, I think 93pts would be fair for this wine. I did indeed really enjoy this bottle. I saw it on the wine list and with all I've heard of the producer, was what I wanted to order. But before I said that, I/we also asked the Somm for a recommendation and thankfully we were all on the same page, as she also suggested the Gonon.

My note above was the 'in the moment' thoughts on the wine. My 'search these out' comment was indeed a reference to the mushrooms and not the wine, but the comment could also be applied to the wines of Pierre Gonon, which are, a bit more difficult to find than the mushrooms.

Crisp, clean, and cool — the 3 Cs of the best of Chardonnay. Acidity throughout the palate, a hint of bite at the end (powerful notes of citrus zest), all-around salivatingly good — damn good. Honey and wax notes swaying in and out, though what is most captivating about this wine is the presence of the sea. A very intriguing umami of sorts, and sips that have only accelerated in complexity as the decanter sits on ice. In the glass, a touch more yellow than pale, almost golden. Cold butter — land o’ lakes before the logo change. Served single blind. @ Frank’s Wine Bar

This is not just “good for a York Creek” (a left handed compliment for a cuvée that often underwhelms) or even a “good York Creek”, but this pour is a very good Zin; as good a Zin as I’ve ever opened. Deep burgundy at its core, it is beautiful in the glass. Cassis, caramelized brown sugar, cinnamon, sweet cherry, and mocha intertwine with heady Draper perfume. The palate delivers each note from the bouquet with a dollop of black fruit. The finish delivers more Draper perfume, then cedar and mocha that lingers. Nice balance. So good is the wine that we pulled a second bottle. It is just that satisfying. Throwing a smidge of sediment. Comprised from a blend of 93% Zin and 7% Petite Sirah. 14.7% alc. With assorted blue cheeses including Bleu du Basque, bread and molé. Recommended with a nod toward Highly Recommended.

This is my second Hundred Acre Cabernet, and I must say... I don't get it. This is rich and polished, especially for such a big wine, but there are a lot of rich and polished wines in Napa, most of which don't price themselves into the $400+ territory. Despite my best efforts, I've enjoyed, even loved, wines in this price bracket (e.g., Harlan, Tusk, Absurd, Lokoya), but these wines seemed to offer something unique, in terms of class, depth, intensity, or site. At the risk of saying something unpopular, this wine is very expensive - but not very distinctive.

Cherry red in color and medium in body (2% milk), the wine offers aromas of boysenberry, mulberry, gravel, and dried herbs. The flavors are well-balanced, with notes of blackberry, sour cherry, cocoa powder, and fresh leather, with a lingering and layered finish that has an appealing floral quality (read: light on its feet). 15.5% alcohol. Decant at least an hour.

I enjoyed this wine, but not as much as I had hoped. Like some sort of mediocre Will Ferrel movie, I kept rooting for it to be better than it was - but the punchline was fumbled, and the payoff just wasn't there. I'm docking it a point for the price, but - real talk here - this wine would be destroyed by other 2014 wines that are cheaper... and better (e.g., Tynan, Moonracer, Carter OG, Futo OV). I welcome insights from more experienced followers of the winery - and I do get a kick out of the owner - but I'm a bit underwhelmed by this wine at this moment.
  • nzinkgraf commented:

10/25/21, 6:36 PM - Specifically, which Will Ferrell movie(s) does this wine evoke for you? Asking as someone who enjoys wine and music pairings as much as wine and food pairings.

Maybe it's because I just had a Valentini rose last week, but it's tough to have this without reflecting on that. It's not because they should be similar in any way, but they both reputationally sort of transcend the style in some way or another... if not deliberately at least in price; or rarity; or geek-cred. I actually like this better. It's earthy, and has a lot of acid, and isn't at all refreshing, but it is good. There's a sort of oxidative Rioja quality and a sour citrus element, and it does kind of work together despite the weirdness. A serious wine by any measure, and I really do appreciate and like this, but I just don't understand where it fits.

Mid yellow-orange colour. Quite toasty, lactic, saline nose, not really my thing. But the taste isn't bad, it's quite balanced and on the sweeter end of brut (that may be due to softening acidity with bottle age). Not as compelling as the blanc de blancs, nor in this example even the straight Cuvée des Moines. But it's not bad, and all three are creditable, well presented, and at least as good as most big house NVs. Disgorged March 2012. [Composite cork + cage; 12.5% abv; Oddbins, -25% @£30.75].
  • nzinkgraf commented:

2/1/18, 5:57 PM - Please note that a wine’s acidity doesn’t change much with age. Our perception of it may due to other factors as wine ages.

    From Decanter -

Jim Boyce, Wolverhampton, asks: Can you settle an argument about acidity and wine age? A friend says that acidity will remain constant, but I say that it will soften. Who is right?

Stephen Skelton MW, for Decanter, replies: In technical terms, the level of acidity in bottled wine remains almost constant with age. But that’s not to say that the perception of acidity on your palate does not change.

Esters can alter our perception of sharpness – they are compounds formed during ageing, due to the reaction between alcohol and acid in the wine. Tannins and phenolics are also responsible for making a wine taste harsh, and these will drop out as sediment as a wine ages and help to soften a wine’s taste.

    Or Wikipedia -
During the aging process, the perception of a wine's acidity may change even though the total measurable amount of acidity is more or less constant throughout a wine's life. This is due to the esterification of the acids, combining with alcohols in complex array to form esters. In addition to making a wine taste less acidic, these esters introduce a range of possible aromas.

    Thanks for the note!

I understand that this is not a wine for everyone, but tonight it was incredible. An orange-gold color (color from age, not an orange wine as nzinkgraf points out). Definitely needs food, but with scallops in a chili, ginger and tangerine sauce and Dungeness crab ravioli with carrot-apple nage it was firing on all cylinders. Plenty of acid, nose and flavors of orange peels and fruit, nuttiness, ripe green apples, just so much going on here. Yes, oxidative, but in a really interesting and food friendly way. One addition to my prior notes: this held up pretty well over 3 day’s, with the cork shoved back in and kept in the fridge. I add this because it suggests this wine might have more life in it than I previously thought. Probably won’t make old bones, and I wouldn’t expect a lot of improvement; still the drinkability over 3 day’s suggests this might have at least 3-5+ more years of life left.

And, as I’ve noted earlier, it’s a very nice CCR.

11/27/17, 2:27 PM - Thanks for the note on the ‘09. Yes, more life left indeed. I’d give it another 10-15 at least. I’ve got some ‘69s that are still a pleasure to drink.
And while I do like CCR, this ain’t that, but a CRR.

Some ABV on the nose. Feels kind of clumsy on the palate. 7-up liveliness on the palate. Oak, brown sugar. I need to re-evaluate...

Dark ruby with sweet fruit. Moderately high alcohol with tannins starting to feel rough. Feels like it is starting to approach end of drinkability window.

9/14/17, 2:32 PM - Thanks for your note, I'd have to encourage you to give this wine signicantly more time, as I find it to have not even entered its drinking window yet. When I had a bottle last year, it was obtuse and dense for the first couple days open and then really blossomed on Day 3. Vintages (various) from the late 60s-the early 90s of Bucerchiale/Riserva are drinking wonderfully. This wine is one of my faves but generally needs 8+ years to really emerge, then drinks well for another 20-30 years.

8/23/17, 6:33 PM - Let me re-phrase that, 90 with nice potential. Without Buena Vista having a track record for this wine, I want a few more years in bottle to really assess. Your thoughts?

Fragrant. Volume, deep and complex with hidden potential. Apple tart on the palate.

Supposed to be more ready to drink (compared to '05 tasted in parallel) and crowd pleaser, but I personally disagree. The wine is closed - very young. Needs cellaring for more years to come - should improve.

2008 is a Grand vintage.
Single Grand Cru vineyard, Chardonnay exclusive as all the wines of Pierre Peters. 40-50 yrs old vines which is truly 'vieilles vignes' for Champagne heavily suffered during war

8/11/17, 10:41 AM - Please note that not all Pierre Peters wines are exclusively Chardonnay. They also make a Rosé (NV Rosé Albane) that includes approximately 40% Pinot Meunier. Love the wines and thanks for the note.

light red color -- like cranberries. a slight funk like Gamay, if not for the fact that this was part of a Pinot tasting I would have guessed Beaujolais for sure, in retrospect I can see the Cali natural wine characteristics here. Bright cherry flavors. Incredible QPR though unsure how this will age. WOTN for everyone at our tasting.

Dinner at Ceres' Table (Chicago, IL): From 500 ml (do they come in any other sizes?). This was probably my favourite wine of the evening. The nose has a slight saline quality to it, along with some very explosive and ripe red fruit aromas, as well as just a little bit of volatile acidity, which doesn't really get in the way of things. The palate is quite coarse and feels a bit rustic, but there's no dirty funk here at all. Dense and concentrated, but with a real freshness too.
  • nzinkgraf commented:

4/13/17, 8:06 PM - Only 500ml is my understanding. 7000 bottles of 500ml. They make so little wine that 500ml means they can make 'more bottles.'
