{cork, 13%} There was evidence of a bit of a leak; a vein up the side of the cork, though the level wasn't too bad. But the wine was sherry... No joke!

This could prove to be an expensive bottle of wine for me in the long term; until now every Lirac I've had has obviously been too young - tannic, unbalanced, a little hard. This is as soft as velvet. Just beginning to show signs of age at the edge, but mainly dark purple. Nose of soft leather, liquorice, Agen prunes, a little smoked bacon/meat, sweet paprika and vanilla. Medium to heavy body but soft and supple, acidity to give a serious ability to deal with food but good on its own. Lingers with scents of rose ans smoked cherry (!).

Dark, purply-black red. Heavy nose of black fruits: damsons, plums with an edge of geranium leaves. Smooth boiled sweet fruitiness bringing in cherries and tobacco with some tannin remaining, giving it 2 to 3 years' more development. Very full-bodied, a serious wine lacking only in the complexity of a Chateauneuf-d-P.

Sweet nose of red fruit and wood. Sweet and tart red fruit, minerals on the palate. Pretty, light, easy and straightforward. Medium finish with a nice grip.

Popped and poured. Dark red, purple rim. Slight cork taint on the bouquet but maraschino cherries and alcohol underneath. Velvet round entry builds to pleasant dark fruit mid-palate but final marred by bitterness and prickly alcoholic heat. A fine mineral streak. Tannins well integrated now.
Could not call it balanced but it does deliver a basic and honest expression of an inexpensive southern Rhone.

Chateauneuf du Pape Dinner (Restaurant Atelier, Glebe Point Road, Sydney): Deep ruby coloured, some rather obvious oak on the nose - vanilla, caramel and spice, red fruit - cherry and berry. In the mouth more caramel, red fruit but no hint of residual sugar, dry and the beginnings of very slight leathery notes

Très correct pour le prix! Bon accord avec le jambon aux ananas et sirop d'érable.

Assez typé mais une amertume inutile nuit à l'expérience.
