Coravin fun - Rioja new arrivals (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Baked strawberry and blackberries, vanilla and sweet spice, a touch of tobacco leaf, a smidge of wood glue, gets more woody with time. In the mouth it's austere; the fruit more muted, the woody notes more to the fore, touches of vanilla and cream and almost buttery note. Hmm.

Quite a big, modern and well made wine, open and pleasurable. But for my palate lacking the refinement and interest in the best Rioja. Good stuff though 14%

Decanted around an hour before drinking, contained significant amount of sediment. Very deep uniform colour. Tasted alongside two other vintage Riojas. Bouquet heady with alcohol, giving way to reveal vanilla. Full bodied, tannins perhaps a little brash therefore might do well from another year in the bottle, good character in the mouth; a very pleasant wine indeed.

The nose is Worcestershire sauce with a dab of red fruit. Deep, dark crimson hue. Spicy black cherry and plum fruit on the palate with a spicy finish. Not a great value.

Confraria - Espanha (Arturito): Excelent wine. Very balanced, integrated oak, toffee, tobacco, elegant, smooth tannins, delicious acidity. The best red wine of the night at this stage.

Confraria Janeiro 2014 (Restaurante Arturito - São Paulo - São Paulo): We tasted blind the following wines: Remírez of Ganuza Reserva 2005, Alion 2001 and Vega-Sicilia Unico 2000. All similar to each other and characterized by a high quality, elegance, balance, good acidity and well integrated wood. Youngs. Choosing the best was not an easy task and led discussions. In the majority opinion, the Alion 2001 was the best, followed by Remírez of Ganuza Reserva 2005. I liked all, but I preferred the Remírez of Ganuza.

Deep ruby colour. Both nose and palate were closed at first (although we opened the bottle an hour ahead), but soon some notes of red berries, flowers, oak and minerals came forth in the nose. Very tight, and quite tannic in the palate at first, but also elegant with red berrys, fresh acid, minerals and some oak. The wine opened up beautifully during the evening, and dark fruit with vanilla gradually took over, but still with nuances and good structure. However, I think this wine is reaching its limit, and should be consumed within a couple of years. Oh, and I almost forgot the sign of excellence; the finish-very long! We had lamb patties, ratatouille, creme fraiche and oven roasted potatoes with the wine.

Nose: A bit of spicy mint, some nice earth smell. Nice and pretty mature nose.
Attack: A bit of tannic oak. Pretty dry. A lot younger on the attack.
Midpalete: Earthy typical rioja tones, some lemon after that. Pretty young still. Some minttannins with oak coming through. Not that fullbodied for a rioja.
Finish: Dry mint for sure. Almost like a barolo. Some lemon coming through.
3-4 years from now the wine will peak and possibly become a 90 wine.

Its a solid wine with a big nose of blackberry and dark fruit, oak leather and spice. The tannins are moderate and the wine is balanced with a short finish. Its still rather tight and could get better with some more time.

Went really well with roast beef and balsamic tomato salad. Strong wine with good tannic finish. Fruit still there but not dominant. Pleasant wine.

Started off with bright fruit, which muted significantly over the next hour. Would not recommend extended decanting.

Excellent Rioja, the flavour runs right through from start to finish really good intensity, with quite a tannic finish.
Good drinking now but plenty of potential.
14%ABV sealed with cork. Bought off retail shelves at 10 years of age - try buying a 2005 Bordeaux for this price!
