very punchy, lacking elegance. It is however possible that it will find it with serious cellaring time because there is little chance that this will dry up any time soon.

A private lunch (Club Newport 1852, Huizen, NL): Young-vine Santenots. Wonderfully clean, precise and pure, ripe strawberry and cherry, hints of smoke and spice, touch of rose, perfectly integrated and subtle oak, medium weight, linear and mineral, silky, lovely freshness and harmony, very good length. An outstanding, delicious Volnay that beautifully expresses vintage and terroir and that clearly bears the signature of Dominique Lafon.

This bottle gave a similar showing to previously tasted bottles. On this occasion the wine initially seems somewhat reserved. Airing gives it more expression and accessibility.

Very ripe berry fruit aromas to start with some dark chocolate. Faint floral hints and just barest spice traces on nose. Lush, fat black cherry and boysenberry flavors with very good acidity and minerality. At first there was a slightly austere, green element on the finish, but that softened and mostly dissipated after the bottle was open 90 minutes. From Lafon's young vines Santenots-du-Milieu, and this showed considerable similarity to a bottle of that wine from this same vintage tasted earlier today.

Deeply tinted, ripe, full but a bit brambly. Some wood present but not overdone. Good but very young and New Worldly compared to the Chevillon before it.

Medium ruby. Pungent with some charred oak. Then a lovely cinnamon spiciness rises. Ripe (but not overly so compared to other wines of the vintage), dark red fruit. Full for a Volnay with the wood definitely showing, but it still has a sense of lightness and the fruit is delicious.

Popped and poured. Ripe berries, darker floral, and earth on the nose with crushed stones. Rich and ripe on the palate with the same dark berries. Nice structure buried underneath all of the fruit. Great balance and medium finish.

Another excellent showing for this wine. This bottle shows a fleshy and generous wine with excellent balance and youthful fruit. This drinks well now for its youthful vibrancy and should benefit from an additional year or two of bottle age.

Opened and poured, this wine showed well with supple, accessible style. The aromatics show dark cherry, floral and subtle earth notes. The color is a rich medium ruby that is youthful and vibrant. The medium bodied palate shows rich fruit with a medium length finish. There is just enough acidity and tannin to keep the wine focused and balance the fruit. This drinks well now for its youthful, forward fruit and may improve with a year or two of additional bottle age.

Domaine Lafon Cellar Visit and Tasting (Meursault): Barrel tasting at Domaine. Hasn't been racked at all. Floral to start. Lush red fruit on nose with moderate spice. Simple fruit in middle, will drink very nicelyyoung.

Another Evening of Lafon in Red and White (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Full ruby. Smoke and ripe cherry. Bold and ripe, nothing delicate about it. Some wood. Lots to it, very '09, which is to say that it will appeal to New World Pinot palates, but lovers of fleshy Burgundy will enjoy it as well.

A Few Lafon Meursaults and Volnays (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Deep ruby. Relatively rich cherry fruit. Not over the top but more 2009 than Volnay; this became more clear tasting through the 2 older vintages.

Another outstanding showing for this wine. Although, on this occasion the wine seems richer and more fruit forward.

Was paired really wells so drank even better. Lush fruit but not overpowering. Good balance, good structure. Never overpowered; pleasant nose.
