Bottle opened in the restaurant without any particular preparation as recommended by the creator of this wine.
Nose of cherry, kirsch and wilted rose.
Quite austere on the palate, with a juice that struggles to deliver immediately but which reaches a good balance after a good aeration with aromas of leather. The wine has a beautiful silky feel but is in dire need of significant aeration. More alcoholic finish with incisive bitters which enhances the whole with a fresh finish with raspberry which returns boomerang-style.
Very good wine, not tasted in optimal conditions unfortunately. But the 2011 tasted a few months earlier had impressed me more, 2009 being a more sunny vintage and therefore much richer, it is hardly surprising, this bottle needs more time on its hands.

En Primeur campaign for the 2022 vintage Day Seven (Bordeaux): "Served blind Quite savoury, earthy, slightly peppery, black over red fruits, acid is slightly sharp, tannic burr rasps the palate. I went with a Languedoc/Roussillon blend from a warm vintage - perhaps Minervois ?"

Was not blown away like when I had the 05 Chateau Rayas...that was such an amazingly singular, candied red fruits with HAUNTING perfumed spices...so elegant and feminine...a real beauty! Never had the Pignan...was told 100% Syrah(wrong!)...so I was a little bummed it wasn't the Rayas...what's the diff in the wines btw? Well...it was darker and richer in fruits..dark cherry, blackberry, plum fruits...liqueured and med bodied...wonderful smooth polished tannins...deeper earth and tobacco tones, yet still has a nice brightness of tart cherry skin...very pretty herb and flower garden florals...mellow pepper spice, olive...red licorice salinity. I wish I would have spent a little more time with it, but the fireworks of when I had the 05 Rayas didn't get lit in me...so I moved on to the other 23 wines we had going on!
The 2009 Chateau Rayas - Pignan Chateauneuf Du Pape was like eating an alcoholic piece of strawberry pie. Sweet red fruits, tobacco, vanilla, and herbs on the nose with a silky tannins and long finish. -DD94.

Another lost Friday afternoon gathering - mostly French (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Expressive nose displaying ripe red and black fruit, black cherry, strawberry jam, licorice, strong tobacco, white pepper, garrigue, dark spices and earth. Already showing beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered ripe black fruit, fluid and weightless, medium acidity and mineral, and a seamless long ripe black fruit driven finish with tobacco at the end. The nose already expresses the complex Raya’s nose with strong tobacco and garrigue. If the Pignan is this good, I really want to drink the 09 Rayas. Exceptional showing.

Wild levels of VA on this wine. Like sucking on nail polish. Have not experienced a wine of this pedigree with such a deep problem in years. Over 2 hrs in decanter it only got worse.

Poured to decanter for 2 hours. Should have given it more time or air. Still very primary ripe fruits dominant. It’s very delicious but lack of complexity of the 2007 I had last year. Opened it too early, luckily still a few bottles in my cellar.

What goes on here? Rum, raisin etc, reminded us a bit of the 2003 des Tours Vac. Extrenely warm and rich, bit may settle, when it gets older - for now, stay away, this is 2009 than Rayas. #Møntergade#PB-HAA

Just a gorgeous nose filled with scents from a rose garden or orchard. Sweet bouquets which are so attractive but a palate that strengthened over the evening. Could do with a lot more cellar time but just lovely to drink this. More approachable than the 07 tonight.

Zachys auction at Formento's (Chicago, IL): The vintage appellation combo scares me, but the producer certainly plays a huge role here. In fact, this truly does taste like a classic Rayas wine, with the sweet red fruit and lighter disposition, coupled with the crazy amount of white pepper. Nowhere as alcoholic and heavy as the vintage would indicate, but there is definitely some serious structure for a bit of aging here.

Opened in the bottle for 4-5 hours. Miniature cork, opaque coloration but surprisingly full bodied. Some heat and prune with beautiful accents of tobacco, sweet red fruit, glycerin, vanilla extract, sage.... Very complex and still needing time to mellow out.

Short decant, great aromas of ripe sweet strawberries, cherries and roses, the 09 keeps getting better as it ages, full bodied, rich with a tannic bite 93+

Pruny, ripe, this bottle is very primary compared to previous bottles drunk, wow let this sleep for 5 years, decanted for 2.5 hours and still young, not your usual 2009 Pignan 90+

Color: medium red Nose: wonderful ripe strawberries, beautiful & complex Palate: wow this is a really good Pignan. It could be better than a rayas from a so so vintage, medium bodied, concentrated. Delicious sweet and savory core. Long finish, complex, potential to age for at least a decade or more

Le vin que j’ai le moins aimé des 6, un peu plus dur et faisait un peu alcooleux sans être mauvais. 89-90
Out of the 6 Reynaud wines, the one i liked the less without being bad, alcool seemed higher, some heat on the finish.
