  • Acid city. Luckily this was served with a cheese course so it was tolerable. On its own this might not be good at all. Acid out of balance. Lacking fruit. Comes off a tad but harsh. The 01 Clos des Lambrays in the next glass is putting this to shame. Unlikely this ever straightens out and comes into balance. Drink now with fatty foods to absorb the abundance of acid.

  • medium garnet color with scarlet rim. Nose is a mix of stewed cherry/plum, hint of truffle and mocha, with nice complexity. On the palate red fruit that is overpowered by a searing acidity. This wine begs for rich food, and paired well with a roasted chicken which balanced out the acidity. Without food, the acidity is overpowering for me.

  • challenging to get my head around this wine - difficult to determine this was a pinot. Not that it was too old, but It would likely have been better five-ten years ago.

  • Medium garnet core, pale mahogany rim. Nose at first a touch surly, but opens quite quickly to show plum and dark cherry fruit, rich earth and undergrowth, touch of iron, some sweet raspberry coming through too. Medium/full bodied, attractively savoury dark fruit, soil, some sweetness too, vibrant acidity carrying a very good length finish with a touch of dusty tannin still showing. Excellent, certainly drinking, but absolutely no hurry.

  • Surprisingly approachable given producer and vintage, especially after getting some air.

Not the most exuberant of burgs: more on the rustic side. The acid touch of 1996 makes it a more vibrant wine than you'd normally expect from Faiveley. Still, dark fruits dominate. Long.

  • only the slightest bricking, nose is mild cherry and a whiff of caramel/oak, palate is cherries and more cherries, the acid of the vintage is too prominent and makes this taste astringent, would go well with rich food but i drank w/out food and it was distracting... UPDATE - drank the last 1/5 of the bottle on night three and it had rounded out just ever so slightly, best on nite three... could this get better with a few more yrs in cellar?... not clear

  • Deep red in the glass. Good aromatics, very approachable and drinking well.

  • Clos Vougeot Dinner (Acquitaine - Lincoln Park, Chicago): Pop and pour. This was tightly wound and didn't have all too much going on until some nice floral notes emerged after 2 hours or so of air. Not surprisingly, this had great acidity, a relatively dark fruit profile and subtle floral tones to the firm palate. 1996s are a fickle bunch.

  • Clos Vougeot Dinner (Aquitane, Chicago IL): nose: tight nose at first and unforgiving. It does show itself a bit with tones of earth, dark red cherries, dark red fruits and spices. Good depth with a very masculine quality to it

taste: extremely good medium feel with very noticeable medium/high acidity and some chewy tannins. Balanced with very good depth and silky tones of earth, dark spices, and a good amount of dark red fruits

overall: this is still very young. Has the 96 acidity to it and certainly shows it. This had a nice dark red color to it with some rimming, but this was still a young wine. Some of the sternness seems to be pulling back, but it needs a good deal of air at this time

  • (Old note)
Dark fruity, discrete and subtle nose. Some violets and herbs. Not very invinting.
Medium body, some elegance. Dark fruit and spices. But at the same time mean, acidic, slightly astringent and bitter. (Tasted blind this took a beating of2002 Pousse d'Or and 2001 DRC Echezeaux not surprisingly. For our tasting group it confirmed the notion of Clos de Vougeot as the Russian Roulette of Burgundy.)

  • Drinking well, lots going on in the glass. Had the last glass after bottle had been open 5 hours, it was really singing, great aromatics but slightly short on the finish.

  • Simple Series VII: B.A.G (Burg, Alsace, German) - JT's farewell (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): Another nice Clos Vougeot. Nose had lots of rich cherry scents, almost kirsch like at points, along with sweet dark fruit notes, almost a little like old Grenahce in its richness I thought, but then there were very Burgundian earthy truffle tones, and finally a little winter melon hovering in the background. There was just a bit of reductiveness at the edges, but that cleared up quickly enough. The palate was marked with super-high acidity - made me think 1996 for awhile - but there was also that richness that was suggested on the nose, expressing itself with some lovely sappiness to the wine's cherry flavours amd some sweet dried fruit character that made me think 1990 instead. Past the attack and into the mid-palate, I got some earthiness and bits of spice that grew as the wine flowed into a juicy finish that showed a little patina of powdery tannins. Nice concentration and depth, lots of freshness, nice fruit starting to take on secondary characteristics - this was really quite a nice wine. Plenty of upside too I think. This has just about stepped into its drinking window.

  • Simple Series Dinner (Asia Grand, Singapore): This had a firm acid spine which lead me to guess either 1990 or 1996. Color was slightly browning so I guessed (wrongly) a 1990. Interestingly once unveiled I couldn't believe it was Faiveley because this was almost, dare I say it, ready to drink?

  • 2010 Simple Wine Dinner Series No.7 - JT Farewell (Asia Grand @ Odeon Tower): Alcohol : 13%
Tasted Blind. This is quite similar aromatic profile with the Engel CDV but also more depth, and more age than with high tone of mineral background. The palate is not up to the par with the Nose though it is also very rich, good mid palate weight and sappiness but it is not as fresh and the fruits started to dry out which results in it slight alcoholic and austere, dry finish. Enjoyable now. Drink up. Buy - No.

  • Lovely bright red in appearance.
Big nose of stewed plum iniitially although this was much less obvious after wine openned up. Lots of spice and pepper.
Fruit very balanced. Wine has a long finish.

  • A rare foray into burgundy for us, but boy it was well worth it. Wine was rich and bright red. Nose of savoury, slightly peppery. Wine was very soft and fruity, easy to drink with on obvious tannins. Became more savoury/smoky after food. Perhaps my pinot noir eureka moment...
