One of my two WOTN. Brighter, more energetic, younger and with more heft than the 1998. Plenty of layers with a red-purple fruit, spice, minerals and game are presenting a wonderful, complex Vigna Rionda showing. Changing, growing and playing in the glass. A wine that goes right to my Nebbiolo heart.

Wonderful mature barolo. Nose of black cherries, roses, leather, menthol, balsamic notes. High acidity, great depth, big mouthfeel, ripe but still bold tannins, long finish. This is in a good spot now, but there is absolutely no rush here. Both tannin structure and fruit consentration will make this wine run for at least another decade.

Klar mørk rød. Antydning til lett orange rand. Modne mørke kirsebær. Tjære og lær. Menthol. Etter en stund nype og epleskrott. Etter ett par timer anes en stund orientalsk krydder og til og med peppermynte. Tidlig nesten brutal. Mektig voldsom i munnen. Stram, kompromissløs med snerp.. Raskt mer nyansert og vinen byr på flere lag. Flott temmet syre. Vanilje og epleskrott. Blekk og blyantspiss er med i avslutningen. Vinen er med lenge...

Dark red to black-toned cherry fruit, plum, spices, balsamic, and menthol on the nose, which is dark and nicely expressive. On the palate, the wine is similarly dark in profile with spicy black cherry and plum fruit and a bit of balsamic and leather towards the back end. The texture is fairly lean, the tannins have begun to be nicely integrated, and the wine has a fairly high acidity level, all making this quite drinkable today but in my opinion making it unclear how well it will age from here. The '99 Rionda possesses beautiful dark aromatics and I like where the flavor profile is heading, with a lot of primary dark fruit remaining but some savory elements beginning to emerge, but the texture and body of the wine is a bit lacking in comparison.

Drukket av Zalto Burgund. Kjøpt på Blomquist auksjon. Luftet i 3 timer. Klassisk flott Nebbe duft, roser, tjære, lær. Fin balanse mellom frukt og tanniner. Noe modenhet, men ingen tertiære aromaer, har endel år å gå på (mest pga frukten). Bra lengde. Drikker den lett kjølig i glasset. Alkoholen på 14% ikke merkbar. Dette er en fantastisk god Barolo. Årgangen 99 leverer.

The nose was dark, rich and savory, as mineral-infused black cherry lifted from the glass, followed by dusty soil tones, sweet herbs and crushed stone. On the palate, I found soft textures, as a mix of cherry and strawberry were complemented with rosy inner-floral perfumes, giving way to a spicy mix of acid and still-youthful tannins. This remarkably pretty yet structured wine finished on a note of hard red candies, with hints of fine tannin and bright, zesty acids that made the mouth water. What a beautiful wine, and so much more approachable than the last time I tasted it. I wish I had a case.

A classic, elegant barolo that is very well rounded and drinking beautifully. Bright notes of sour cherry and strawberry. A fine vein of graphite. Just spectacular and reminds of Giacosa. These wines take a while to soften but when they do, they are borderline magical.

Appears soft on the nose, with caramel and tea notes. Tannic and tough on the palate. Stern and reticent. Needs more time, but I am not sure how much better it gets.

Outstandingly good. What I'm looking for in nebbiolo is balance between the iron fist of a proper tannic structure and the velvet glove of ethereal, floral gorgeousness. Too much of the former and it's monolithic and boring; too much of the latter and it's frivolous and insubstantial. This is right bang on the money. Sure, it'll last another 15 years, but why wait.

Tasted blind. Floral notes, red fruit and rust. Lots of iron and blood on the palate. Quite tight and concentrated. Beginning its window but I think it will be better in five years.

Incredible elegance on the nose - rose petals, tar, a hint of smokey gunflint & lavender. Palate is really, really refined, probably right at its peak now, with just a hint of cigar smoke mellowing the cherry fruit flavours. Great acidity & tannin balancing everything out. Smooth, silky, delicious

[PWS' Barolo Masterclass & Dinner at Bellota with Michael McNamara, Melbourne] Deep dark ruby, semi-translucent with purple hue. Demure nose slowly opened up with air; black raspberry bouquet emerged with suggestions of tilled earth, black & red cherry, strawberry, dried flowers & herbs, leather, underbrush & spice. Medium plus, quite deep, intense, fairly concentrated black & red fruits stymied by much mouth-coating assertive tannins, sappy extracts & fine bright acidity; tightly coiled & dry palate refusing to budge; a formidable wine of enormous structure bordering on unyielding hardness saved only by the presence of acidity-induced freshness. Long tannic finish.

1999 Barolo and Barbaresco: Right on Track (Via Emilia, 47 East 21st Street, Manhattan, NY): The nose was restrained, yet found its center with time in the glass, showing a bouquet of bright spiced cherry, tobacco, sandy soil and saline minerals. On the palate, it was lean in body, showing notes of dried cherry, earth and mushroom with teaming acidity and a broad structure that took control and lasted throughout the finish.

Drank at the Pino groups Piedmont tasting at Andiamo's. Medium dark, still young looking. Nose of dark cherries, mint, and a little dirt - fantastic! Still young tasting with plenty of time even though this was really singing. It was maybe the WOTN. Super balance with nice dark cherry fruit, mint, licorice, and a floral element on the long finish. This can definitely drink now or age for a long while.

After 4 hours of decanting the 1999 Vigna Rionda explodes from the glass with aromas of Menthol, Black cherry liquor, new leather and tobacco. On the palate, wild berries at first that swells to sweet red fruit on the mid palate, however, it remains quite angular and finishes with an earthy minerality and tart raspberry. The tannins are still up front and mouth coating but this bottle left me with an intense longing to see what it will be in another ten years. A very balanced and fine Barolo with little hint of the new wood that is mentioned in previous reviews.

Duft: Litt lukket, ren nebbiolofrukt, åpner seg litt, men trenger mere tid. Smak: Stram, konsentrert frukt, litt "smal", men dette virker lovende. La ligge.

Heftig vin, mørk tett og tannisk. Med luft kommer mer kirsebær og litt asfalt. Men dette er et langtidsprosjekt...
